Episode 69: The Temptation of Nihil

The Abyss trembled.

The Cradle of Origin pulsed like a living organ. Each vein glowed brighter with every thunderous heartbeat. The voice of Nihil, the Eternal Sovereign, rolled across the chamber like a storm breaking through reality.

"Cast aside the fragile chains of flesh. Cast aside nas. Cast aside love. Beco my heir, Kuro Jin."

The emberlight crown above Kuro's head flickered violently, its flas twisting black at the edges. His greatsword vibrated in his grip, eager to obey. Shadows coiled around his legs, wrapping around his chest and whispering with every touch.

Elira clung to his arm, violet fire burning in her eyes. "Kuro! Don't listen! That isn't power—it's a cage!"

But the voice burrowed deeper.

"They hold you back. Every step, you carried their weight. Alone, you carved your way through blood and ruin. You don't need them."

Kuro staggered, breath ragged. For a brief mont, Elira's hand felt like a shadow's weight. Her voice echoed like sothing far away. His gaze blurred—her face shifted, uncertain, flickering like glass ready to crack.

---

The ground shook. THUUMMMM! THUUUUND!

The walls of the Cradle split open, spilling out another wave of Abyss Guardians. Dozens this ti, their biochanical forms grinding forward with steel jaws gnashing. KRRRSHHH! CLANK-CLANK-CLANK! Their claws dragged sparks against the fleshy floor as they surged.

Akira snapped into stance, katana flashing. "Tch. More toys."

Reina spun her daggers, a grin masking the strain on her face. "We'll handle them. Elira—keep him anchored!"

The Guardians roared. SKRRRREEEEEEE!

They charged.

---

SLAAAASH-THUUUND-CLAAAANG!

Akira's katana clashed against steel claws, sparks erupting. He twisted, cutting low. SHRRRRAK! A Guardian's leg split, but gears screeched as it grew back, blood-red ichor spraying.

Another lunged at Reina. She spun midair, daggers slashing in a blur. SL-SHK-SL-SHK! Crimson ichor sprayed, gears snapped, yet the beast kept coming. She snarled and shoved both blades into its skull. SKRRRRK! THUUUND! It toppled, twitching.

But ten more pressed in.

The Cradle thundered with chaos. THUUMMMM-BOOOOOOM-SLAAAASH!

---

anwhile, Kuro's battle wasn't outside. It was within.

Shadows dragged him into a space of nothingness. A throne rose in the void, carved from black stone and taller than mountains. Upon it sat a figure draped in robes woven of void—Nihil himself. His face was a shifting mask, never the sa twice, but his eyes were empty pits that swallowed all light.

Kuro's breath caught. His emberblade wavered in his grip.

Nihil's voice was calm and terrible. "Sit. Beco . Accept the truth you've always known: bonds are illusions. Power is eternal."

Shadows whispered louder: Elira is a dream. Akira is a lie. Reina is a phantom. None of them are real.

Kuro's crown darkened further. His chest ached. His knees bent toward the throne—

"KURO!"

Elira's scream cut through the void.

Her frostfire surged, violet wings tearing through the shadows that bound him. He gasped and turned. For a heartbeat, her form pierced the nothingness, hand reaching for him.

"You're real," he whispered hoarsely. "You're real."

---

The Guardians pressed harder outside.

Akira grunted, blade locked with two beasts. CLAAAANG-CLAAAANG-THUUUND! His arms shook, blood dripping from fresh cuts. "We can't keep this up!"

Reina panted, rolling under a claw. THUUD! KRRRSHHH! She stabbed upward, erald eyes blazing. "Hold the line! If he falls, we're dead anyway!"

Elira's wings blazed brighter, frostfire burning in spirals around her as she clutched Kuro's crown. Her voice broke but never wavered. "I won't let you go, Kuro! You are not Nihil—you are Kuro Jin!"

The shadows scread in fury.

---

Inside the void, Nihil rose from the throne, his voice like thunder. "She anchors you to weakness. Cast her aside."

His skeletal hand stretched forward. The void itself bent, crushing down on Elira's image, trying to erase her.

Kuro's eyes widened as her form cracked like glass. "NO!"

He roared, emberblade flaring, slashing through the void. SLAAAAASH-BOOOOOOOM! Fire erupted, shattering the chains.

Nihil staggered, his cloak tearing. His hollow eyes burned brighter. "So you resist. Then drown in eternity."

From the void floor erupted countless phantom blades, all aid at Kuro. SHHHHRRRRACK-SHHHHRACK!

Kuro raised his sword, sparks flying as he parried. CLAAAANG! CLAAAANG! CLAAAANG! Flas burst with every strike, but each impact shook his bones.

Elira's frostfire surged in behind him. "Together, Kuro!"

Their powers intertwined—emberlight and frostfire spiraling into a single storm. FWOOSH-KAAAASHHH-BOOOOM! The phantom blades shattered, the void trembling under their unity.

Kuro's eyes burned as he glared at Nihil. "I'm not your heir. I am my own Monarch!"

---

Back in the Cradle, his crown blazed anew, emberlight searing black shadows away. The Guardians recoiled, screeching. SKRRRREEEEEEE!

Akira slashed one down. SHRRRRAK! Reina gutted another. SL-SHKKK! Elira stood beside Kuro, her frostfire storm pushing the horde back.

Kuro raised his blade high, his voice shaking the chamber. "Awaken—my Dominion!"

BOOOOOOM!

Shadows erupted from his crown, sweeping across the Cradle. From the ichor and gears of fallen Guardians rose shadow-forged soldiers, skeletal yet clad in armor of black fla. They marched with weapons drawn, eyes burning.

The Guardians hesitated, then were overwheld.

THUUUUND! SHRRRRRRAK! KAAAABOOOM!

Kuro's army tore into them, steel against steel, shadow against tal. The battlefield shifted, the Monarch's will dominating the Abyss itself.

---

Nihil's voice echoed one last ti, furious yet resonant. "So be it. Reject now. But every Monarch falls. And when you do, I will claim what is mine."

The void faded. The throne crumbled.

Kuro staggered back into himself, his sword blazing, crown burning brighter than ever. Elira steadied him, their foreheads pressed together, breaths trembling.

"You're mine," she whispered. "And I'm yours."

He smiled faintly, exhaustion in his eyes but steel in his voice. "Always."

---

The battlefield fell silent. The last Guardian dissolved into ash. Kuro's shadow army stood tall before fading into mist.

The Cradle pulsed one last ti, revealing a new descent—spiraling stairs of bone and crystal leading deeper. The mist below glowed with unearthly violet light.

Akira collapsed onto a knee, wiping blood from his jaw. "Tch. That was hell."

Reina leaned on him, though she smirked despite the blood on her lips. "But we didn't break. None of us did."

Elira pressed closer to Kuro, her frostfire dimming. "The next layer will be worse."

Kuro nodded, lifting his blade. His crown flared like a beacon against the Abyss.

"Then we descend. Together."
