An Ge knew that Huo Shaoyan and Xiao Chaofeng were good brothers. Recently, Nan Xiao and Xiao Chaofeng were going through a divorce, and Xiao Chaofeng had been searching for Nan Xiao all over the place. If she were to reveal the truth to Huo Shaoyan, it would be equivalent to exposing Nan Xiao’s whereabouts.
Therefore, she didn’t plan to tell Huo Shaoyan the truth and instead replied perfunctorily:
"It’s not a particularly important friend, just... so private conversations between won."
Huo Shaoyan leaned down and carried her off the hospital bed.
An Ge’s injury was on her left arm, and Huo Shaoyan’s movents were extraordinarily gentle as he lifted her.
After carrying her to a small dining table, he said to her in a calm tone:
"I ntioned that I would stay with you tonight."
After a pause,
"Of course, if you think I’m intruding on your conversation, I can step away temporarily. Once you’re done talking, you can call afterward?"
This was considered a compromise from Huo Shaoyan.
An Ge had no choice but to agree, "Okay."
The supper Huo Shaoyan bought was all designed to promote a patient’s recovery, consisting of various liquid foods. However, An Ge had no appetite.
She felt not only uninterested but even nauseous looking at the millet porridge.
When Huo Shaoyan saw her gagging, his brows knit slightly.
An Ge realized that his intense gaze was fixed on her lower abdon. Suppressing the strong wave of nausea, she said to Huo Shaoyan:
"I’ve had so stomach issues recently, and I just don’t have any appetite for any kind of food."
Huo Shaoyan squinted slightly, "Really?"
An Ge held a forced smile and confird with a slight nod, "Yes."
Huo Shaoyan answered indifferently, "If you don’t have an appetite, then don’t eat anything."
After a pause, "Whenever you feel like eating, just let know."
An Ge nodded, "Okay."
Huo Shaoyan asked, "Should I carry you back to the bed to rest?"
An Ge replied, "My injury is on my arm; I can walk just fine..."
Huo Shaoyan knew An Ge wasn’t comfortable with him touching her right now, so he let her be.
As she got up and walked toward the hospital bed, Huo Shaoyan remained seated at the dining table.
She glanced back at him.
Under dim lighting, his facial profile was sharply cold, his brows lowered, and his expression difficult to discern.
His entire presence exuded an indescribable gloom.
Noticing her gaze, Huo Shaoyan lifted his eyes to et hers.
As their eyes locked, An Ge inexplicably felt a bit guilty.
Having spotted the fleeting guilt in her eyes, Huo Shaoyan remarked with a half-smile:
"You seem... a little guilty?"
An Ge almost bit her tongue because of his comnt, her voice hurried:
"...N-no, not at all. Why would I feel guilty? I don’t have any secrets now; what could possibly make feel guilty?"
Huo Shaoyan raised his jet-black brows slightly.
He stood silently gazing at her for a while, then got up from his seat.
Instead of walking toward An Ge’s hospital bed, he stopped at a polite distance and said flatly:
"How long do you need to talk with your friend? Give a precise ti, and I’ll co back later."
An Ge was more than eager for him to leave, so she replied:
"About an hour or so." After a brief pause, she added, "You might as well head back and bring so daily necessities with you while you’re at it..."
Huo Shaoyan nodded lightly and left the room without looking back.
He went downstairs and then walked to a nearby convenience store.
The cashier was a young female student working a part-ti job to earn her tuition.
Today was her first day at work.
She hadn’t expected to see such a charming, mature man on her first night on the job. Her cheeks flushed with excitent.
"Sir... H-hello, is there anything I can help you with?"
Huo Shaoyan got straight to the point, "Do you sell pregnancy tests?"
The young girl froze montarily but quickly replied, "Yes. Please wait a mont."
A few minutes later, Huo Shaoyan took over a dozen pregnancy tests and asked, "How do I pay?"
The young girl replied, "I can scan your QR code."
Huo Shaoyan opened the paynt QR code on his phone and was about to pay when the ceiling above suddenly collapsed, and a block of concrete fell.
In the nick of ti, the young girl pushed him out of harm’s way. With a muffled gasp of pain, the concrete block shattered into pieces upon hitting the ground.
Gray dust scattered everywhere.
Despite the chaos, Huo Shaoyan instantly noticed the injury on the girl’s arm.
Blood stread down her arm, but she bit back her tears without crying.
Huo Shaoyan quickly approached her and crouched down, saying, "I’ll take you to the hospital."
The young girl’s eyes reddened as she muttered, "...The shop has no one else to run it, and I... I don’t have the money to get treatnt..."
She embarrassedly explained her dilemma: "It’s my first day at work. If I ss this up, I won’t be able to afford my tuition..."
Huo Shaoyan furrowed his brows and told her:
"Don’t worry about your tuition. You’re injured because of . From now on, I’ll cover your dical expenses and tuition."
The young girl’s eyes brightened, gratitude shining in her gaze, "...Thank you."
Half an hour later, the doctor treating her injury told Huo Shaoyan, "Luckily, it’s only a surface wound, and the bone wasn’t affected. But the girl’s injury required seven or eight stitches. It’s best if she stays in the hospital for observation for two days."
Huo Shaoyan nodded, "Good."
He quickly arranged a hospital room for her using a priority channel.
Once he finished settling her into the room, an hour had already passed.
For the first ti, the young girl experienced this level of thoughtful care from a man, and her heart couldn’t help but flutter.
She gratefully said to Huo Shaoyan:
"Sir, thank you so much. If it weren’t for you, I wouldn’t know what to do... Thank you..."
As Huo Shaoyan looked into her shimring almond-shaped eyes—perhaps because they resembled An Ge’s sowhat, or perhaps because he felt unusually benevolent—he responded with rare gentleness:
"Take good care of yourself. Later, I’ll arrange for soone to assist you."
After speaking, he was about to leave when the young girl anxiously called out:
"Sir, may I ask... your na?"
Huo Shaoyan turned back and glanced at her, "My surna is Huo."
The young girl quickly said:
"I... I’m Lin Keke. I took the college entrance exam this year and got admitted to Jincheng University..."
Jincheng University was Imperial Country’s top academic institution; gaining admission there wasn’t easy.
Huo Shaoyan congratulated her, "Congratulations."
Lin Keke’s face lit up with excitent. Her father had passed away, and her mother remarried.
She lived with her mother and stepfather, but her stepfather was not only a drunkard but also lecherous.
Her stepfather often tried to take advantage of her behind her mother’s back.
She had complained to her mother, but her mother was incompetent and told her to endure it; otherwise, her stepfather wouldn’t pay her university tuition.
Determined to escape her stepfather’s abuse, Lin Keke had started working a sumr job to earn her tuition.
She never expected to et a benefactor on her first day of work.
Lin Keke not only felt imnse gratitude toward Huo Shaoyan but also harbored naive fantasies about the flawless man standing before her.
She thought to herself that this man was undoubtedly wealthy. If she could establish so sort of connection with him, she could at least live a life free from worries.
With this in mind, Lin Keke said to Huo Shaoyan:
"Mr. Huo, may I... add you on WeChat? Although my current circumstances are sowhat dire and my family background is quite poor,
your kindness toward has left feeling undeserving. I just think that, soday, when I’m capable, I’ll definitely repay you..."
Huo Shaoyan raised a brow and said:
"No need to repay . Focus on your studies and pay it forward to society in the future." After a pause, he added, "Later, I’ll have my secretary co take care of you."
After leaving Lin Keke’s hospital room, Huo Shaoyan called Secretary Jin, "Co to the hospital."
Secretary Jin had been working nonstop for a month and felt that if this continued, she might drop dead.
But defying her boss’s command was out of the question.
Resigned, Secretary Jin replied, "Alright, President." After a pause, she asked, "President, how are you feeling today?"
Huo Shaoyan frowned and responded impatiently, "Speak clearly or shut up!"
His sharp remark made Secretary Jin realize he was in a bad mood.
But she had already had enough of his temper.
So she got straight to the point and said, "President, I’m considering resigning..."
Before she could finish, Huo Shaoyan interrupted coldly, "You think your salary’s too low?"
Secretary Jin replied, "Not exactly. I just want so ti off. I haven’t had a proper break in ages. I’m so exhausted that my nstrual cycle has stopped. If this keeps up, I’m afraid I’ll go into early nopause... Beep—"
Before she could finish speaking, the man rcilessly hung up.
Afterward, Huo Shaoyan carried the bag full of pregnancy tests and headed back to find An Ge.
