The thing under the stone had a pulse.
That was the information I had. I sat with it for a few minutes while the rest of the group spread out through the adow in various states of decompression. Several people were lying in the grass. One of Commander’s team had found what looked like wild strawberries at the forest edge and was bringing them back in a cupped palm. The rabbits that had been in the trees earlier had migrated to the adow’s edge and were watching us with the calm, absolute indifference of prey animals that had never encountered a predator.
I looked at the open exit gate.
I looked at the sword.
I thought about what it ant for the anvil to be warm from the inside and have a rhythm under the stone. The sword was embedded in the anvil. The System said pull the sword and go. The exit was already open.
If I pulled the sword, I left with the sword and whatever was under the anvil lost the thing pinning it down.
That was the shape of it. Not proven, but the shape was clear enough.
I opened the item shop.

Junho thought about this. Then: "Fair."
He sat down next to the stove and watched work with the expression of a man recalibrating his understanding of what a Tower stream could be.

General Survival gives you terrain reading, animal handling, and material identification. General Trade gives you better exchange rates in the item shop." I added oil to the pan and listened to it heat. "If you ever get the chance to buy general skills, buy all of them. You won’t notice them individually and you’ll notice all of them together."

The rabbit went into the pan and produced a sll that moved through the adow imdiately. Several climbers who had been lying in the grass sat up. Commander, still at their tree, turned their head.
Plate arrived without being invited and sat down across the stove from Junho with the compact authority of a large man choosing a location.
"Slls good," he said.
"Sit down," I said.
He was already sitting.
Grey found us about four minutes later, registered the situation, sat down, and said nothing except "is there enough for everyone?" to which the answer was that the item shop existed and the floor had absolutely no ti pressure, so yes, there would be enough for everyone.
Over the next forty minutes, Floor 29 beca the longest break the group had taken since the Tower climb began.
The chat had questions, and with the floor doing nothing I had ti to answer them. Soone asked about the difference between mana reinforcent and mana channeling skills. Soone asked what the best defensive skill for a healer was. Soone asked whether I thought the Tower had an end point or whether it went on indefinitely. I answered the first two with practical specificity and deflected the third with "I’m working on finding out."

"That confirms it," I said.
The chat went quiet in that way it did when it sensed a decision coming.
"The sword is a lock," I said. "Whatever is under the stone, the sword is what’s keeping it contained. Pull the sword and you clear floor 29 with a nice weapon and then you walk into floor 30 with whatever was under the stone already awake and waiting for you."
Silence on the adow. The climbers who had been eating and resting were listening.
"I’m not pulling it," I said.

I looked at the two light points in the sky. Then back at the anvil.
"I’ve been running these floors fast," I said, to no one in particular. "Consecutive clears, minimum rest. I’ve been so deep in the sequence that I stopped looking up." I set my palm against the stone again and felt the warmth and the slow rhythm underneath. "I missed the constellations going quiet. I missed a lot of things that were happening around the margins of what I was focused on."
The adow was quiet except for the birds.
"I’m not going to miss this one," I said.
I put both hands on the stone and pushed my mana into it.
The stone ward under my palms, then ward further, then beca sothing close to hot as the mana sank in and pressed downward. The rhythm under the stone slowed. Just slightly. The way a sleeper’s heartbeat slows when sothing weighted settles over them.
I held the push until the last reserves of mana left my system and the flow stopped.
Then I stood up, picked up my pack, and walked toward the open exit gate.

They would wonder why.
