Chapter 79: The Road Ahead I Will Walk With Her

After a heavy snowfall, the cetery in the outskirts was still a white, powdery scene, as if adorned with jade. The chilling sensation of winter always crept into the marrow bit by bit. The misty white fog of the early morning had yet to disperse. Jiang An huddled in the car, clutching a bunch of purple double-petaled hydrangeas she had just picked from the flower shop.

Fang Qing loved hydrangeas when she was alive. Jiang An rembered that when her mother was seriously ill, she bought a bunch for her and placed it in the hospital room. Hydrangeas symbolize hope, and at that ti, she always said she was sure to get better.

But now, everything has changed.

Gao Chuan, sitting in the driver’s seat, noticed Jiang An’s low spirits today and naturally understood the pain in her heart. In the back seat, he had a bunch of white chrysanthemums that he had picked earlier. Today he was supposed to have a day off to take Jiang An to visit her grandmother, but when the girl told him she wanted to visit Fang Qing’s grave, he drove her here together.

At ten o’clock, the two of them drove to the cetery. When they found Fang Qing’s gravestone with their flowers, they saw a black figure prostrating before it. Wei Yan turned around after hearing footsteps and showed a glimpse of surprise in his eyes when he saw the two people walking side by side, quickly stood up, adjusted his emotions, and said to them hoarsely, "You are here."

Gao Chuan had already heard from Jiang An that Wei Yan would also co today, but still, he was shocked to see the man kneeling before the gravestone from afar. He had only known that Wei Yan was once a prized student of Fang Qing, but he had never realized that this man’s devotion and loyalty to Fang Qing were so deep.

Gao Chuan and Jiang An each placed their flowers in front of the gravestone. Previously when he helped Jiang An with Fang Qing’s funerary affairs, he discovered that beside Fang Qing’s gravestone was the gravestone of Jiang An’s father, Jiang An Country. At that ti, he had also briefly heard from Jiang An that she had lost her father at a young age, and that her mother’s only wish was to be buried together with her father after her death.

Now, the two of them have finally got their wish.

The next second, Jiang An silently kneeled in front of the grave of Jiang An Country. She had already made up her mind on the way here that she must not cry today. She should be coming to share the good news with her mother, but the mont her eyes touched the black and white photo of Fang Qing smiling on the gravestone, tears ca gushing out like a breached dam.

The girl’s voice trembled: "Mom, I’m here to see you."

Gao Chuan knelt down in front of Fang Qing’s grave alongside Jiang An. He was never the type who was good at expressing himself. Hearing the sadness in Jiang An’s words, his heart also clenched.

Standing nearby, Wei Yan saw the couple kneeling down together, a bitterness surfacing in his heart. He turned around and walked away, leaving a line of footprints in the thick snow.

Before long, Jiang An asked Gao Chuan to leave, "Dr. Gao, I would like to have a mont alone with my mom. Could you wait for in the car?"

The man’s gaze rested on the teardrops at the corner of the girl’s eyes, and he nodded heavily before turning to leave.

At this ti, the best thing to do was to not disturb her, he knew.

When Gao Chuan helped Jiang An choose a gravesite, he had been fond of this location for its serene mountains and clear waters. The cetery was situated in the East Suburb of Jing City, surrounded by secluded villages. Fang Qing could rest here in peace, unlikely to be disturbed by anyone.

Gao Chuan intended to go straight back to the car on the sa path they had co, but before he was close, he saw a man in a neat suit leaning against his black Phaeton from afar, clearly waiting for him.

Gao Chuan paused for a mont without giving it much thought and walked directly over. After all, it was not the first or second ti that Wei Yan had sought him out.

But he thought, after what he had made clear last ti, Wei Yan surely couldn’t continue to cause trouble for Jiang An anymore.

His leather shoes made a "crunch crunch" sound as they stepped on the snowy ground. Seeing him approaching, Wei Yan silently pulled out two cigarettes from his pocket, extending one towards Gao Chuan, he exhaled two words, "Talk?"

Gao Chuan did not anticipate this move. His expression remained calm as he extended his hand to clip the cigarette offered, using Wei Yan’s lighter to ignite it between his fingers. In an instant, wisps of white smoke rose, swirling past the cheeks of the two n before dissipating into the sky.

Wei Yan still leaned against the car without moving, while Gao Chuan stood half a ter away from him, his clear features reflected in the car window in front of him.

"Don’t worry, I didn’t co here to argue with you this ti," Wei Yan said, tilting his head up, not looking directly at Gao Chuan.

Gao Chuan heard the slight self-mockery in his words and showed no sign of relaxation in his expression.

Wei Yan, blowing smoke rings, suddenly said in a deep voice, "I really didn’t expect Anan to bring you along today."

When they had arranged to et yesterday, Jiang An had not ntioned that Gao Chuan would accompany her. It must have been Gao Chuan’s own decision to follow. Wei Yan rembered that when he first heard the news of Jiang An’s injury a few days prior, he had called imdiately, only to hear Dr. Gao’s voice on the other end of the line.

At that mont, a single thought dominated his heart: His girl didn’t seem to need him anymore.

Gao Chuan, having heard Wei Yan, arched his eyebrows without a change in expression and replied, "Anan is my wife. Accompanying her to visit her mother is the right thing to do."

Before the words had finished, Wei Yan suddenly started laughing with a curved mouth, "Haha," his face, however, full of helplessness and mockery.

From their first confrontation, he had seen that Gao Chuan, a seemingly quiet and reticent man, spoke with precision and clarity in his words. This was why he had always thought that Gao Chuan was very cunning and worried that Jiang An would be bullied by him.

Just like now, he was beating around the bush to proclaim his sovereignty.

Wei Yan had always been aware of his hostility.

"Actually, sotis I really envy you. She has only been in your life for less than half a year, and she willingly married you. I’ve known her for nine years, and in the end, I didn’t even have the chance to confess. Gao Chuan, it was you who took her away from ." The man had been holding back his emotions; it was as if he was revealing feelings long hidden deep within his heart.

Perhaps he had never considered that the encounter that sumr when he was eighteen would strand the emotions of his lifeti.

Gao Chuan listened to the man in front of him, who spoke with a lesson-teaching tone, and remained silent in his spot.

Wei Yan continued with emotion, "You definitely don’t know her as well as I do. I know the origin of her na, I know she has been afraid of pain since she was a child, I know that after falling seriously ill at sixteen, she has always dread of becoming a doctor soday, I know she tends to catch a cold every change of season, I know her eighteenth birthday wish was to travel the world with her teacher... So, I always thought that once my career was stable and I could provide her and her teacher with a better life, I could rightfully be with her," the man said, his eyes seemingly shining.

Perhaps he was the only person in the world who knew just how deep his feelings for Jiang An were.

"But then you ca, and you took her away as soon as you arrived," Wei Yan lifted his gaze to et Gao Chuan’s, but the initial spark of confrontation was gone.

Gao Chuan looked at the man in front of him, deeply moved, and felt an inexplicable heaviness settle in his heart.

"You may not be familiar with what you ntioned, but I will be there to walk the rest of the journey with her," Gao Chuan faced Wei Yan’s questioning and said slowly, word by word.

In matters of affection, there is no precedence of arrival.
