Just a few days later, bored out of her mind at ho during the vacation, Ji Wanwan made plans to go shopping with Jiang An, who happily agreed. Originally intending to take a cab directly to the mall, Jiang An didn’t expect Ji Wanwan to arrive fully equipped, driving to the school gate to pick her up.
As Jiang An walked out of the school gate, she almost failed to recognize the woman in a black hat and black mask. Ji Wanwan was waiting in a red Porsche, rolling down the window only when she heard Jiang An knock on the glass, beckoning her to get in the car.
The bond of friendship between won is established so simply—sharing a al or a shopping trip can make them as close as sisters.
Ji Wanwan took Jiang An around the mall, inside and out. Jiang An, who rarely visited luxury stores, watched as Wanwan swiped her card for big and small purchases, almost maxing it out, while a broker even ca over to help her carry her shopping.
Throughout the entire trip, Jiang An only bought one outfit for her thesis defense. After racking up a load of purchases, Wanwan noticed that the young girl beside her had only bought one item and frowned in discontent, "Why did you buy just one thing?"
Jiang An replied with an awkward smile: "There’s nothing else I wanted to buy."
Besides, the clothes here all start with three-digit prices, and as a college student who hasn’t yet graduated, she couldn’t afford them.
Ji Wanwan sized up Jiang An from head to toe: a black wool coat paired with a white shirt beneath, just an ordinary student’s ensemble. After scrutinizing her, Wanwan pulled Jiang An into a clothing store, insisting, "Co on, it’s rare that we’re out shopping together, let pick out a few outfits for you."
Jiang An, who hadn’t planned on shopping at all, was dragged by Ji Wanwan into a fitting room with several dresses, authoritatively ordered to try them all on.
Knowing she couldn’t win against Ji Wanwan, Jiang An obediently took off her coat. Before she could take off her shirt, her phone in the coat pocket rang a few tis. She took it out and saw a WeChat ssage from Dr. Gao.
Gao Chuan: Are you busy at school this weekend?
Jiang An replied that she was out shopping with Ji Wanwan, then put down her phone and changed into a pure white slip dress. She stepped out of the fitting room for Ji Wanwan to have a look. The woman nodded slightly and commanded her to try on a few other pieces.
After trying on several dresses that were all very different from Jiang An’s usual style, she stepped out with the dresses and was about to ask the sales associate to put them away when Ji Wanwan, who had been sitting on the sofa watching her try on clothes the entire ti, stood up and handed over her card to the clerk, "We’ll take all of these. Charge it to this card."
Before Jiang An could object, Ji Wanwan wrapped an arm around her shoulder and smiled, saying, "You should dress like this from now on. Don’t let such a pretty, promising young lady go to waste."
The clerk happily packed the dresses and proceeded to check out. Jiang An glanced at the figures on the receipt and, while walking out with the bags, held onto Wanwan, "Sister-in-law, I’ll transfer the money to you later."
Hearing this, Ji Wanwan paused, took Jiang An’s arm, and said, "Since you’re calling sister-in-law, consider these clothes a welco gift from . Just co out shopping with regularly from now on. If you see anything you like, I’ll buy it for you. Don’t worry, your brother’s money can’t be spent up."
Ji Wanwan flaunted the several bank cards in her bag in front of Jiang An. Given that an actor’s inco is considerable enough and with Gao Yu pampering her, it would be an outrage if she didn’t indulge herself.
"What’s the matter? Can’t bear to spend Dr. Gao’s money?" Ji Wanwan seed to have seen through Jiang An’s considerations, removing her sunglasses to reveal a pair of watery, large eyes. "Don’t ever save on his behalf, his wealth is more than enough to last him a lifeti."
In the early years when she had just married into the Gao Family, she had heard so rumors about Gao Chuan. The second son, who was ant to join forces with Gao Yu in leading the family business, beca a doctor after graduating from university, an unprecedented choice. Though he wasn’t actively involved in the company, in na he was still the second largest shareholder of the Gao Family. Furthermore, the Gao family was not one to enact a drama over inheritance disputes. Gao Yu had always hoped that Gao Chuan would return soon to co-manage the company with him. Unexpectedly, his brother had made quite a na for himself in the dical field and even set up a laboratory in collaboration with professors abroad.
"Let’s go, I’ll take you out to eat." Ji Wanwan saw Jiang An spacing out and pulled her straight to a top-floor restaurant, where the two waited for their dishes while turning their heads to watch the evening hues on the riverside.
The evening glow in the sky gradually faded away, the flowing river shimred with light, and dusk soaked the entire sky with a veil of mist.
The two chatted casually for a bit until sothing sparked Ji Wanwan’s interest. Resting her chin in her hands, she curiously asked the girl sitting opposite her, "I’ve always had a question that I’ve wanted to ask: how did you and Dr. Gao get from knowing each other to getting married?"
Jiang An seed to have beco accustod to such questions, and recounted the story she had crafted before once more.
Sure enough, Ji Wanwan’s expression grew even more puzzled. She picked up a glass of fruit wine from the table and took a sip, laughing, "I didn’t expect Dr. Gao to be such a romantic."
"When I first ca into the family, I heard them talking about how odd Gao Yu’s brother was. Almost thirty years old and yet had never dated. You know, I thought to myself, a guy with such great prospects not dating or marrying must either have an unrequited love or be gay." Ji Wanwan carelessly griped to Jiang An, then turned back to see the younger girl still looking clueless and gently curled the corner of her mouth.
She realized that this little girl was truly too adorable, soone anyone would want to tease upon eting.
"How did he confess to you? Tell about it." With such widely different people coming together, anyone would be dying of curiosity, and gossipy Ji Wanwan was no exception.
For a mont, Jiang An was at a loss for words. There was no such thing as a confession between her and Dr. Gao; they went straight to marriage without even defining a romantic relationship.
Seeing the girl’s silence, as if understanding sothing, Ji Wanwan showed a deflated expression, "I knew it. An ice cube remains an ice cube even after getting married."
Realizing they were almost on different wavelengths, Jiang An said nothing more, twirling so spaghetti with her fork and putting it in her mouth, only to hear Ji Wanwan warn her next, "Be careful, I’ve heard that so daughters of important families in the circle have been eyeing your husband. Don’t let them succeed."
Jiang An nodded dumbly. Dr. Gao was so popular in school, of course, there would be many admirers. Although Dr. Gao had told her he had no exes, she couldn’t help but overthink it just like Ji Wanwan had suggested – that maybe the reason Dr. Gao had remained single for so long was because he held an unrequited love in his heart.
And perhaps it was an unrequited love that couldn’t be together for so reason.
