The hazy moonlight spread like spilled ink, and the gentle evening breeze caressed Jiang An’s tender cheeks as she listened intently to Ji Wanwan’s words, reaching out to tuck her windblown wisps of hair beside her cheeks.
"So, you are my first friend here," Ji Wanwan stared into the girl’s watery big eyes, then suddenly turned her gaze aside and spoke word by word.
The commanding tone fell into Jiang An’s ears, dreamlike, and the girl’s eyes widened in disbelief.
"Of course, if you don’t despise after knowing these things..." Ji Wanwan turned to face her again, but before she could finish, she heard Jiang An excitedly say, "I wouldn’t despise you, it’s an honor for to be friends with my sister-in-law."
For a mont, she felt as if she was floating in midair, Ji Wanwan glimpsed at the young girl’s innocent smile and curved her own mouth slightly.
That night, they talked late into the night, as if two kindred spirits had co together, but only Jiang An knew she envied Ji Wanwan, even though there were nurous misunderstandings with the Gao Family, at least Gao Yu deeply loved her.
After all, she was the real outsider.
——————
In the blink of an eye, it was December, and Jing City entered the early winter, with job fairs and recruitnt presentations at various hospitals in full swing. Jiang An was also about to face the upcoming thesis defense.
The temperature had dropped sharply in the past few days, and standing at the entrance of the school’s milk tea shop, Jiang An wrapped her coat around herself a bit tighter. Perhaps because of the sudden change of seasons, she caught a slight cold and inhaled through her chilly nose, turned around to take the cup of hot milk tea Xia Zi passed to her, and tightly held it with both hands to finally feel a bit of warmth.
Xia Zi watched her shaking from the cold and scolded with an air of authority, "I told you to wear more, can you still endure this cold? Maybe you should skip the lecture later."
Jiang An pressed the milk tea against her cold cheeks and shook her head. She didn’t want to miss the lecture, especially since it was said to be given by a top doctor from the City Hospital.
Because buying milk tea delayed them a little, by the ti they arrived at the hall, it was already packed with people. She and Xia Zi bent over to find two remaining seats in a corner and sat down. Just as Jiang An was about to sip her milk tea, Xia Zi suddenly grabbed her arm and shook it hard, nearly causing her to spill the tea on her clothes. Jiang An pouted in dissatisfaction, but then heard Xia Zi excitedly pointing towards the direction of the podium, "Anan, look quickly, the great doctor is here to lecture."
Following Xia Zi’s gaze, Jiang An saw Gao Chuan in a suit and leather shoes, guided by two staff mbers to the speaker’s position, still wearing his usual glasses he donned for reading, his angular face featuring a pair of eyes soft like water, his movent touching the microphone gentlemanly and gracefully.
"No wonder the lecture hall is so full in such cold weather, everyone must be here to see the great doctor," Xia Zi said while gazing at Dr. Gao on the podium, her eyes shining. Jiang An remained calm, continuing to drink her milk tea, though her gaze couldn’t help but be drawn to the man on the podium who had already begun to prepare the PPT.
She rembered the last ti she was reunited with Dr. Gao was during a campus lecture. At that ti, many girls around her were infatuated with Dr. Gao.
In the midst of their talk, Gao Chuan had already started his presentation, thodically introducing the employnt situation and this year’s recruitnt policy of the City Hospital to the audience. Speaking confidently in front of everyone, the City Hospital had always been the top choice for students from the dical College, and he had never been responsible for these exchanges between universities before, but as an alumnus of University A, he naturally had been assigned to co.
Gao Chuan scanned the lecture hall and finally found Jiang An sitting in the corner. When his gaze turned to her, he realized she was intently sipping her drink. The girl wore a cal-colored coat that made her appear sowhat bulky, the action of holding her milk tea very much like that of a child.
He didn’t know when, but it seed that he could always spot her in the crowd at a glance.
The man’s lips curled into a smile as he turned his sight back and continued his lecture.
About half an hour later, the seminar concluded, and Gao Chuan stood up to bow to the students before sitting down again. Then a staff mber walked down the stage, microphone cord in hand, to announce the beginning of the question and answer session.
The audience instantly beca abuzz. Among the seated students, many eager to intern at the City Hospital were already itching to go. They scrambled to ask questions, and Gao Chuan tried his best to answer each one, endeavoring to provide as much help as he could.
The microphone was quickly passed to a girl in the middle row wearing blue clothes. She first asked about the treatnt of graduate interns, to which Gao Chuan responded generously. Unexpectedly, the girl did not sit down but instead timidly asked in front of everyone, "May I ask if senior brother has a girlfriend?"
The question was asked softly, and the students below erupted into noise, all casting expectant gazes toward Gao Chuan on the stage, as the girl had brought up a question that everyone was curious about.
Jiang An hadn’t expected a student to ask such a personal question. Observing the scene descend into chaos below, and with Xia Zi next to her going "oh oh" joining in on the uproar, her eyes involuntarily fell upon Gao Chuan on stage and embarrassingly drew back.
"Quiet, everyone." After a few seconds, a staff mber spoke up to maintain order, which quieted the scene sowhat. After everyone fell silent, Gao Chuan cleared his throat and in front of the microphone, extended a pair of distinctively jointed hands with a ring sparkling under the overhead lights on the ring finger.
"I already have a wife." He stated concisely.
Following his words, the hall erupted once more, buzzing with voices. Whispering to each other, the girl who asked the question blushed and sat down in her seat.
Upon hearing the man’s words, Jiang An instantly lifted her head to look toward the man at the lectern, watching him show off the diamond ring she had chosen in the store. A thin layer of blush rose to her face, and her heartbeat raced.
Their eyes unexpectedly t, and the girl turned her head away shyly, praying that Dr. Gao wouldn’t notice her.
The students went into an uproar, and as one of Dr. Gao’s ardent fans, Xia Zi couldn’t help but show a disappointed expression upon hearing Gao Chuan say he was married. She complained to Jiang An, "Ahhh, I knew it, all the handso guys are taken already, I wonder which woman is so fortunate to marry our Dr. Gao."
Jiang An guiltily turned her face away, not wanting to respond to Xia Zi’s words. But indeed, being able to marry Dr. Gao must be the dream of thousands of girls.
Hers too.
With that, the Q&A session ca to an end, and the students began to orderly leave the auditorium. Jiang An, accompanying the deflated Xia Zi, truly felt the state of soone who had just had their heart broken.
"My goodness, the god actually got married, my heart is broken." Xia Zi continued to mutter endlessly about the shock she felt inside upon hearing the news.
Jiang An took out her phone from her pocket, which vibrated twice. After unlocking the screen, she saw a ssage from Gao Chuan.
Gao Chuan: et at the school’s back gate later.
