Chapter 248: Being Followed
The next day, Jiang An returned to work in the hospital early in the morning. After changing into a white lab coat, she passed by the nurse’s station to collect the records of the surgery she perford yesterday. As she approached, she noticed two young nurses at the front desk whispering to each other.
"What are you doing?" Jiang An tapped the files in her hand lightly on the top of their heads, and the two young girls were startled into awareness, looking up to see Jiang An with surprise and delight. "Doctor Jiang, you were so impressive yesterday."
Jiang An knew they were talking about the incident in the conference room yesterday afternoon and she slightly arched her brows without comnt.
The young nurses, starry-eyed, handed her the report they had found and whispered in her ear: "Doctor Jiang, you might not know this yet..."
"Doctor Du has been suspended. It’s said it’s because she was trying to show off yesterday and caught the attention of the hospital leadership. They’re reopening the investigation into her previous dical mishap," the young nurse gossiped quietly.
Jiang An’s gaze faltered when she heard this. While on her way to do rounds, she opened the departnt’s WeChat group and indeed there was a notice about Du Mo being suspended for an investigation. She glanced at her phone for a mont before putting it back in her pocket and turning to enter the ward.
After finishing the routine rounds, she was chatting with another doctor as they headed back to the office. Just as they turned the corner, they ran into Du Mo, who was carrying a box downstairs. When the woman saw her, she dropped what she was holding, rushed over and tried to throttle her, angrily shouting, "Jiang An, what makes you think you can suspend ?"
Jiang An was caught off guard and grabbed by the throat, stumbling back two steps to lean against the wall behind her. She coughed a few tis due to the restricted breathing, "Let go of , I didn’t suspend you..."
After arriving at the hospital, she had learned about Du Mo’s surgical mistake and had never anticipated that an incident that happened almost two months ago would be brought up for review again.
A colleague rushed over imdiately to pull the emotionally overwrought Du Mo off Jiang An, it took quite an effort to separate the fiercely resisting woman from Jiang An, and, in the end, hospital security personnel ca to take her away.
Finally released, Jiang An gasped for air, and a colleague ca up to ask if she was okay.
"Doctor Jiang, don’t take it to heart. She’s probably just panicking because of the suspension," the colleague suggested.
Jiang An, having sowhat recovered, stood firm as her colleague whispered in her ear, "That Du Mo was apparently pushed into her position by the vice-president of the hospital, who likely helped her cover up that accident. If it really gets investigated by the higher-ups, she could be facing more than just dismissal."
"It’s ridiculous how foolish she’s been; this ti even the vice-president might be dragged down with her," the colleague muttered under their breath, "I’ve never liked her."
Jiang An responded briefly and then walked to her office to start reviewing dical records.
After her colleague’s explanation, she understood the situation better. She had inadvertently beco a catalyst and had unwittingly muddled into these troubled waters.
As she flipped through the dical records in her hand, the thought of this troubleso matter made her pinch the bridge of her nose with a headache.
As it neared ti to leave work, she suddenly received a ssage about being called to a consultation in the hospital. While preparing to go upstairs, she received a ssage from Gao Chuan, saying he was already waiting for her downstairs.
Jiang An held her notebook and replied to the ssage as she climbed the stairs.
Jiang An: Got a last-minute consultation. Might take a while. You go on ho first.
Sure enough, the eting room was filled with senior doctors engaged in intense discussions about a case, and before they realized it, three hours had passed.
When Jiang An left the hospital, it was already a quarter past nine. She casually hailed a taxi on the roadside to go ho.
It wasn’t until she was on her way that she opened her phone to read the WeChat ssage Gao Chuan had sent back before the consultation.
Gao Chuan: Okay.
There’s a ssage from just a few minutes ago.
Gao Chuan: Not over yet?
Having toiled in the hospital all day, Jiang An was now both physically and ntally exhausted. The woman swiftly replied after opening the chat, and then returned her phone to her bag, turning to look out the window.
Neon lights flickered before her eyes, and gusts of autumn wind seeped through, scattering the tangled ss in her heart amidst the darkness.
In less than half an hour, the car stopped at a junction not far from her ho. Jiang An paid the fare, got out of the car, and walked into the deserted alley with her bag in tow.
The alley wasn’t too long, the streetlamp above flickering on and off. Although Jiang An had passed through many tis before, she had never walked here alone in the darkness, and couldn’t help feeling a tremor of fear.
She proceeded with trepidation, a faint sound of footsteps intermittently drawing closer, barely perceptible to her ears.
Scared to look back, Jiang An instinctively felt soone was following her. She nervously swallowed and quickened her pace, reaching into her bag for her phone, only to find it had been vibrating silently all this while.
The phone emitted a faint glow, and while continuing to walk, Jiang An saw that it was a call from Gao Chuan which she answered by sliding the screen.
"Hello," ca the man’s deep voice from the phone.
Just as Jiang An was about to respond, she was suddenly seized from behind by a dark figure that locked around her neck, letting out a cry, and the phone fell to the ground with a thud.
"Mmph..."
"Hello, Jiang An? Jiang An?" At ho, Gao Chuan was startled from the couch by the two calls for help from the other end of the line, and after calling out several tis with no response, he sprung into action, bursting through his door and rushing down the stairs.
Just a few minutes ago, Jiang An had ssaged him that she was nearly ho, so she must be close to the apartnt now.
Wearing pajamas, the man began frantically searching the area surrounding the apartnt, ceaselessly calling out Jiang An’s na into the vast night.
At this mont, Jiang An was pinned against a wall by two burly n who rushed up from behind. She opened her eyes in pain, and in the gloom, a fierce-faced man approached her, slapping her hard across the face, sending her kneeling to the ground. She heard the man’s vicious voice from above, "Was it you who caused my sister to lose her job?"
As the words settled, the man grabbed Jiang An’s chin, forcing her to lift her head, her face already marked with deep and shallow bruises from the prior scuffle.
Hearing the man speak, Jiang An realized that these people were likely sent by Du Mo for revenge. She clenched her teeth, twisted her head away, and shouted out loud for help again.
With a slap, another hit landed on her face.
"I’ve heard you’re not bad at seducing n. So today, I’m going to ruin that face of yours for my sister!"
Before he could finish, a loud "Stop it" from not far away interrupted him. The man turned to look, only to see a tall figure rushing in their direction.
