Chapter 190: Alas, There are No Ifs

The surgical report stated that Jiang An had been pregnant for about four weeks. The newly conceived fetus was inherently unstable and ultimately couldn’t be saved due to the car accident.

This also explained why she had been feeling unwell for the past two weeks.

According to the tiline, it coincided with the night she had resolved to have a child with Gao Chuan.

Neither of them had expected to conceive on their first try.

Yet she had lost the child before she even had the chance to learn of its arrival.

After accepting everything, Jiang An appeared extraordinarily calm, not causing any scenes due to the loss of the child. Her deanor was not so much composed as it was utterly devoid of life.

To better care for Jiang An, Wei Yan specially hired a professional nurse, and he himself would rush to the hospital as soon as he finished work.

However, the girl sat listlessly by the bedside all day, with little appetite, and her condition, already frail, grew even worse.

Wei Yan ordered his assistant to buy many nutritional supplents to replenish energy and blood, thinking of bringing them to Jiang An, only to find her staring silently out the window upon entering the room.

It was drizzling today, the weather gloomy, and the air carried a hint of dampness.

The man set down what he was carrying and tried to lift his own spirits in front of Jiang An, engaging her in conversation, phrase by phrase.

Seated on the hospital bed and lost in thought, Jiang An ca to chanically, responding as if she were tending to official business.

Seeing the lifeless girl before him, Wei Yan felt a deep heartache; he would rather have Jiang An cry and make a scene in front of him than punish herself in this way.

"Anan, once you’re feeling better, I’ll take you back to your hotown for a visit; it might help you take your mind off things," the man suggested.

The girl responded with a non-expressive "hm," not objecting.

Perhaps for her, nothing mattered anymore.

Nothing mattered anymore...

Ji Wanwan learned that Jiang An was hospitalized when she called her; it was Wei Yan who answered the phone. After finding out she was Jiang An’s good friend, and unable to withstand the woman’s persistent questioning, the man told her about Jiang An’s miscarriage due to the car accident.

Ji Wanwan imdiately drove to the hospital and happened to et Wei Yan leaving the ward. He told her Jiang An was not in a good state and hoped that as her friend, she could give Jiang An so guidance.

After learning of the man’s identity, Ji Wanwan inquired about the child. He had told her over the phone about Jiang An’s miscarriage, but there had been no news of her pregnancy from the Gao Family, which made the woman suspicious.

Hearing her question, Wei Yan frowned and told her in a heavy voice, "Jiang An didn’t know about her pregnancy."

Upon hearing this, Ji Wanwan’s pupils suddenly shrank, her expression turning grave.

"If you have ti, co and spend it with her; she needs company right now," Wei Yan urged with his last words before turning and leaving.

Standing at the door, Ji Wanwan struggled to digest the news she had just received. When she pushed the door open and walked in, she found Jiang An turning her head to watch the drizzle outside the window, her eyes devoid of any luster.

Seeing this, the woman felt as if her heart had been heavily pricked. She slowly approached the bed, and the "clack" of her high-heeled shoes on the floor finally drew the girl’s gaze.

When she saw it was Ji Wanwan, Jiang An instinctively called out "sister-in-law."

Looking at the haggard-faced girl, Ji Wanwan thought of what Wei Yan had told her, and her eyes suddenly welled up with tears.

She had endured so much injustice.

"Jiang An, please don’t continue like this, okay?" The woman stepped forward, grasped the girl’s icy hands, and comforted her with a hoarse voice.

Wei Yan was right, now was the ti for soone to co and wake her up.

Ji Wanwan’s sympathetic gaze enveloped the person on the bed, "This is not your fault, stop torturing yourself, you are the most important now."

The woman’s gentle voice reached Jiang An’s ears, the girl looked up at her with red-rimd eyes, and her expression finally fluctuated.

Ji Wanwan stepped forward to embrace her, telling her, if she wanted to cry, just let it all out.

Jiang An, who had felt numb all along, clutched the woman’s arm, her heart suddenly seized by a wrenching pain.

The gloomy emotions surged like a tidal wave, tears involuntarily flowing down.

Burning tears stread down her face, emotions that had been suppressed for so long finally erupted at this mont, and the girl let out a pained moan under the woman’s soothing: "I didn’t even have ti to know of his existence."

"I am guilty..." Listening to Jiang An’s words of despair, Ji Wanwan couldn’t help but shed tears as well, holding the person in her arms even tighter.

"My child!" Jiang An cried as she lanted.

She simply couldn’t stop blaming herself; over the past few days, she had envisioned countless possibilities in her mind.

If she had taken a pregnancy test right after that night, if she had gone to the hospital for a check-up as soon as she felt unwell, if she hadn’t taken that taxi, maybe she could have prevented the tragedy.

Unfortunately, there were no ifs.

Jiang An eventually stopped crying in the woman’s arms after who knows how long. Ji Wanwan patiently stroked the top of the girl’s head until she, exhausted from crying, helped her lean back against the pillow. Suddenly, she thought of sothing and asked, "What about Gao Chuan? Does he know about your miscarriage?"

Upon hearing her ntion Gao Chuan, Jiang An’s already dismal mood sank even lower.

Ji Wanwan saw her silent non-response and seed to understand sothing, promptly digging out her cellphone from her bag on the chair, intending to call Gao Chuan.

Jiang An had encountered such a big incident, yet her husband wasn’t even by her side; what was going on.

Jiang An watched the woman dialing on her phone and realized what she wanted to do. Panic flashed in her eyes as she quickly approached to stop her.

Ji Wanwan saw her raising her hand to intercept, her anger towards Gao Chuan intensifying, as she pushed away Jiang An’s outstretched hand, indignantly saying, "Don’t stop , if you don’t dare to say it, I will say it for you..."

Jiang An frantically tugged on her sleeve in fear that she would really call Gao Chuan. Her emotions started to collapse when she couldn’t stop her, begging the woman urgently, "Don’t, please don’t call."

"I’ve decided to divorce him." The girl finally spoke softly, her head lowered, as a feeling of indescribable pain boiled with her blood, slowly consuming the last of her resolve.

After her sorrowful voice fell, the woman standing by the bed, full of astonishnt, put down her cellphone and bent down to support Jiang An, who was almost falling off the bed.

Ji Wanwan knew the situation wasn’t so simple and pressed Jiang An, asking if sothing else had happened between her and Gao Chuan.

Jiang An told the woman how Gao Chuan went on a business trip with Song Xin, a topic she hardly wanted to ntion.

At that ti when she was close to despair, that phone call was almost the last straw that broke her.

Jiang An held the woman’s hand, weakly pleading, "I don’t want to go on like this anymore, please, I beg you, don’t tell him for now, I will go to him personally when he cos back..."

"Divorce."
