Chapter 182 What if I want to give birth?
A few days later.
As evening approached, Gao Chuan had just started the car after arranging to dine out with soone when he received a phone call from Shen i.
The woman on the other end was crying, urging them to hurry to the hospital.
After hanging up, the man imdiately changed direction and headed to the hospital where his grandmother was being treated.
The elderly lady had been sent to the hospital that afternoon, where the situation had deteriorated severely—it was feared that she might only have two months left at most.
The old woman had just been moved out of the intensive care unit, her face pale from the tornt of illness, lying weakly in the hospital bed unconscious.
Shen i, sitting beside her, couldn’t hold back her tears as she looked at the old lady, who was barely clinging to life, causing a sharp pain in Shen i’s heart.
Gao Lin was alone in an unoccupied corridor, smoking gloomily, blaming his own incompetence. In his youth, he had been obsessed with making money to provide for his elderly family mbers, but now he faced the "trees want to remain still but the wind keeps blowing" predicant.
When Jiang An and Gao Chuan arrived at the hospital in a rush and saw Shen i crying alone in the ward, with their grandmother still in a coma,
for a mont, the girl nearly choked up and silently walked forward to pat Shen i’s shoulder.
It was as if she instantly saw herself from last year, breaking down in tears in the hospital’s corridor.
Gao Chuan, unable to get any information about the old lady’s condition as Shen i kept crying, went to find the old lady’s attending physician himself, and the information he got was much as he expected.
Even though he had anticipated this day, the sight of his grandmother’s pale lips on the bed still made his heart lurch with pain.
Ever since falling ill, the old lady had maintained an optimistic attitude, often telling them that all leaves return to the root, and her ti to return to dust was near.
This was fate.
Yet, at many monts, he truly wanted to defy this so-called fate.
Before long, the person on the bed opened her eyes, waking up. Noticing her grandmother’s faintly trembling fingers, everyone in the room imdiately crowded around.
"Grandma, how do you feel? Does it still hurt?" Jiang An asked anxiously.
Seeing the eager eyes of everyone around, the old lady struggled to curl her lips into a smile, speaking with so difficulty to reassure them, "Grandma’s fine."
The lady gently lifted her hand to stroke Jiang An’s cheek, her eyes brimming with tears, "Why cry? I, your old grandma, won’t leave so easily. I’m still waiting for you two to give a great-grandchild!"
Clearly in critical condition, her eyes were still full of hope. Hearing the old lady’s proud words, Jiang An broke into tears of joy and quickly responded, "Okay, you just wait for us."
Gao Chuan and Shen i, hearing that the old lady could still speak, felt a sense of relief, their worries temporarily put to rest.
No matter how much ti was left, they had to ensure the elderly lady left this world happy.
Gao Chuan and Jiang An stayed and chatted with their grandma until late into the night, only leaving when Shen i urged them to go ho after the old lady had fallen asleep.
"You two should go back and rest. You have work tomorrow, and I’ve got everything under control here with your dad," they were ushered out the door by Shen i.
"It’s been almost half a year since you two got married; it’s ti to seriously consider having a child. For mother’s sake, please, as a favor for grandma, okay?" Standing in front of them, Shen i uncharacteristically lowered her stance and implored in a soft voice.
They understood that Shen i was also considering their grandmother’s wishes; at tis like this, a patient’s will to live is the most important.
"We know, we’ll think about it," Gao Chuan responded coolly, conclusively pulling Jiang An away from the hospital.
Shen i let out a sigh as she watched their retreating figures, noting their attitude.
On the way back, neither of them spoke a word; perhaps the news of their grandma’s critical condition was too heavy, and Jiang An didn’t know what to say to comfort Gao Chuan, who had a stern expression the entire ti.
After all, she cannot truly empathize with such a situation; all she could do was stay by the man’s side to send his grandmother off on her last journey.
Arriving ho at almost ten o’clock in the evening, both of them were too exhausted to move. Gao Chuan had been in a gloomy mood since returning from the hospital, and as soon as he entered the house, he went to the balcony to deal with lab matters over the phone.
Jiang An sat on the sofa alone, taking a sip of water. Her mind was still filled with the image of the elderly’s frail body at the hospital; every ti she thought about how her grandmother would soon leave this world, her heart felt like it had been pierced by an arrow.
After finishing the call, Gao Chuan ca back to the living room. Feeling the room was sowhat stuffy, he took off his jacket. Seeing the girl’s lost expression on the sofa, he thought she was struggling with the last words Shen i said to them today. He comforted her, "Don’t mind what they said; you’ve done very well."
Even though they were now truly husband and wife, it was still too early to talk about having children. After all, Jiang An was different from him. She was young and just starting her career. For her, having children seed like a distant matter.
The pale-white light in the living room enveloped them. The man had just finished speaking and was about to walk away when he heard a frail voice from behind.
"What if I want to have one?" The girl still sat motionless on the sofa, her head buried low, hiding her current expression.
Perhaps embarrassed to utter such words, Jiang An shyly rubbed her delicate palms together.
Suddenly, upon hearing her words, the man stopped in his tracks, turned his head to look at the woman on the sofa, and from his perspective, could only see Jiang An’s slender back.
After a few seconds, he responded in a hoarse voice, gently reminding her, "Do you know what you’re saying?"
Jiang An stood up from the sofa and gazed directly at the tall man before her. Her light brown eyes, already moist, looked determinedly at him, "I know. If I want to have a child, would Dr. Gao be willing?"
She knew what she was saying; it was the result of her contemplation throughout the journey.
Sotis she wonders if she’s being too presumptuous. She often says she wants to be a good wife but has never taken into account the man’s feelings being forced between her and his family.
Since she’s resolved to spend the rest of her life with the man before her, what reason is there to refuse to bear him a child?
Moreover, she doesn’t dislike the idea.
Gao Chuan was apparently not expecting Jiang An to suddenly say these things. He stood there stunned, watching the girl in front of him biting her lower lip tightly. After a few seconds of eye contact, she lowered her head again, nervously awaiting his answer.
For a mont, he couldn’t quite discern the torrent of emotions in his heart.
Having waited a long ti without a response from the man, just as Jiang An was about to lose heart and turn away, she was suddenly pulled into a kiss by the man charging at her. Their soft lips t, and their breath instantly mingled.
Dizzy, Jiang An wrapped her arms around the man’s neck, reciprocating submissively.
She seed to know the man’s answer.
Warm kisses trailed down her neck, accompanied by the man’s low voice, "Jiang An, adults must be responsible for their words."
Jiang An’s forehead pressed against his in front of her, blushing under his fervent gaze.
She was quickly carried off to the bedroom, her clothes dropping to the floor, one by one.
Gao Chuan habitually turned on only two dim bedside lamps. In the dim light, he gently traced the girl’s brows and eyes, and finally reminded her, "If you regret it, I can stop right now."
He didn’t want Jiang An to be disappointed later if things beca irreversible.
After all, having a child is a significant matter for a woman.
He didn’t want Jiang An to feel pressured into making this decision just because of Shen i’s insistence.
In the end, having a child was a matter for both of them.
The girl looked up at the sincerely earnest Gao Chuan before her, and without waiting for him to speak further, she kissed his chest, her eyes twinkling like stars.
Gao Chuan froze abruptly, and then heard the girl’s voice, as faint as a mosquito’s buzz.
She said she didn’t regret it.
