Chapter 157: Who Really Belongs in This Family
When Gao Chuan and Jiang An arrived at the Gao Family’s house, Shen i had already prepared the al and was waiting for them. As soon as they entered the house, the family’s golden retriever, Yiyi, wagged its tail and crowded around them excitedly. It had been a long ti since Yiyi had seen Jiang An, and it almost knocked her down in its affectionate greeting, luckily Gao Chuan was right behind her, supporting her to prevent a fall.
Seeing how the pet, which had been in the family for almost two or three years, always kept its distance from him but rushed to Jiang An excitedly, a slight displeasure flashed in Gao Chuan’s eyes.
"Yiyi, did you miss ?" After steadying herself, Jiang An opened her arms and hugged the golden retriever, who kept whimpering and nuzzling into her arms.
Hearing this, the housekeeper ca over and, seeing this warm mont, smiled and said, "The young madam hasn’t been here for a while; this little guy has really missed you."
Perhaps Jiang An herself didn’t know why, but from a young age, she had always had a way with cats, dogs, and occasionally children as well.
However, it was different with the man behind her. Gao Chuan watched silently as the girl smiled at the golden retriever, then he bypassed them and headed inside first. As he entered the living room, he ran into Shen i who was just coming out with a dish. Seeing him, she casually asked, "Is it just you? Where’s Anan?"
Anan, Anan, everyone in the family kept calling her Anan. Gao Chuan, furrowing his brows slightly, coldly replied, "At the door."
Upon hearing this, Shen i, without even taking off her apron, rushed to the entrance and saw Jiang An laughing with the housekeeper while playing with the dog. It had been a long ti since Jiang An had visited as they had been busy at the hospital. Shen i pulled Jiang An aside and looked her over, "You’ve lost weight?"
Jiang An, her hand held by Shen i under the doting gaze of her mother-in-law, blushed a little, "Really? I thought I gained weight."
"You have lost weight. Work in the hospital isn’t easy; you need to nourish yourself well. Co and eat, I’ve made your favorite dish, i cai kou rou."
The mother-in-law and daughter-in-law were already at the table, and the family patriarch Gao Lin was also called out by the housekeeper for the al. Upon seeing Jiang An, his eyes lit up. Throughout the al, the couple constantly inquired about her work at the hospital. During the New Year’s gathering, there hadn’t been a chance for a good chat since the house was full of relatives, and after all, Jiang An is their daughter-in-law, naturally, they were more affectionate towards her than other relatives.
"Working in the City Hospital must be tough; don’t overexert yourself, and take care of your health," Gao Lin ntioned with concern upon hearing about Jiang An’s assessnt at work, unusually letting go of his stern patriarchal stance.
"Right, right, how’s the cafeteria food at the hospital? Should I ask Mrs. Song to bring you lunch?" Suddenly rembering the food, Shen i started to inquire.
Jiang An lightly forked her rice, smiling as she declined. Her gaze unintentionally drifted towards Gao Chuan, who was silently eating alone, seemingly detached from the conversation, his expression stern and cold.
Gao Chuan seed accustod to all this by now; ever since Jiang An’s arrival, the old couple had been nothing but elated, making him wonder who really belonged in this family.
"Gao Chuan, co on, eat up, and then we can play a couple of rounds," Gao Lin said softly, noticing Shen i continuously serving food to Jiang An.
Before Jiang An could even respond, Shen i turned and glared at him, reprimanding discontentedly, "All you know is playing chess; your child seldom cos ho." She continued to serve more food into Gao Chuan’s bowl.
It seed like after quite a while, Gao Lin noticed another person at the table. Looking towards Gao Chuan who was sitting opposite him, he said, "You’re both in the sa departnt; look after Jiang An."
Right, these two had no room for him in their eyes.
Gao Chuan nodded coldly. He had always been obedient and subservient to Gao Lin, who had always been a strict figure in his eyes. He had spent his life striving for his father’s approval, only to realize today that Gao Lin could be gentle with his children, just not towards him.
But perhaps it was only natural for his father not to like him.
Because back then he always wanted a daughter for his second child.
Because his birth nearly cost Shen i half her life.
Because the news of his grandfather’s death ca right after he was born.
"Uh-huh." Gao Chuan nodded, but figured that Jiang An didn’t need his help; she probably wanted to stay as far away from him as possible in the hospital.
Thinking about it, it seed that not many people around him liked him; colleagues were wary of his cold nature and dared not approach, and his family had always seen him as dispensable since he was young.
His life, seemingly glamorous, had always been pretty awful.
It felt like he was always alone.
After dinner, Jiang An was dragged by Gao Lin to the study to play chess; the two hadn’t played in a long ti, and Jiang An vowed to win a ga, which made Gao Lin laugh heartily at his niece’s serious expression.
Gao Chuan originally thought about sitting on the sofa for a while and waiting for Jiang An to finish so the two could go ho, but just as he ca out of the kitchen, Shen i brought over so washed fruit and sat next to him, "Co, have so fruit."
Gao Chuan pinched his brow and picked a slice of mango from the fruit plate, just as he put it in his mouth, he heard Shen i tentatively ntion, "Xinxin is back in the country, did you know?"
The man paused for a mont, then continued to put the fork back, responding with a faint "Hmm."
Shen i, seeing his calm face, felt he was careless. She was the mastermind behind that incident all those years ago and had never had a mont’s peace.
Although Gao Chuan had never touched Song Xin back then, she, as the elder, had indeed beco detestable.
"Ah, it was all my fault back then. Xinxin even made a special trip to see us yesterday, and I didn’t dare tell her about your marriage," Shen i bit into a pear, a layer of guilt surfacing on her face as she spoke of the past.
Ultimately, it was she who had caused embarrassnt to both of them.
Back then, she had always thought the two, having grown up together, certainly shared mutual feelings. Little did she know, Gao Chuan did not fancy Song Xin.
A shadow passed over Gao Chuan’s eyes, not wanting to hear Song Xin being ntioned again, "Mom, the past is behind us, let’s not bring it up again."
Shen i, seeing Gao Chuan’s indifferent expression, hurriedly appeased, "Okay, okay, won’t ntion it."
"Just one question, Mom. Do you really have no feelings at all for Song Xin?" Shen i still couldn’t help herself, curiously asking.
Gao Chuan had always been cold-hearted since childhood, and he rarely communicated with them as parents, so she didn’t quite understand Gao Chuan’s true feelings towards Song Xin.
The reason she had always wanted to bring the two together in the past was not a whim, but because of the rumors that stirred as both went to the sa university.
