[Five Days Remaining]

The office felt cold and the air was thick with desperation, fueled by the tension of the investigation. Cecilia held up a page from Katherine’s diary, her finger tracing a section of elegant cursive.

"I found this," Cecilia said, her voice tight with excitent. "Katherine wrote a detailed description of Ava and Adrian, which should help us track them."

She read aloud from the diary, "Ava is small, with striking blonde hair that always manages to look perfect, brunette hair that didn’t cover her back but got to her shoulders and green eyes that are constantly expressive. Adrian is a tall, well-built man, with thick, wavy brown hair and an easy, boyish smile, devilish brown eyes that seed to get through my soul. She even ntions his tendency to wear a sharp, patterned tie."

"Devilish eyes that seed to get through my soul, what does she an by that," Ethan asked after hearing the words of the statent, it felt like sothing happened between she and Adrian but who knows.

Miles absorbed the description. This was their first solid lead on the couple. Despite Jas’s confession about the breakup, Miles and Ethan still held deep suspicion. The cheating confession and his denial about the necklace felt like a partial truth hiding a greater secret.

[Four days]

The next morning, the trio attended Katherine Vance’s burial ceremony. A somber crowd, uniformly dressed in black coats, stood around the open grave. A cold, fine rain began to fall, mirroring the sadness of the mourners.

Miles, ever the keen observer, scanned the area. Near a cluster of oak trees at the edge of the cetery, he caught a glimpse of a figure. She was cloaked in a black coat, standing slightly apart from the rest, an umbrella shielding her face. She was staring intently at the gathering.

"Did you see her?" Miles murmured, nudging Ethan.

Ethan, whose eyes had also drifted to the periphery, nodded grimly. "The girl by the tree. She’s watching us."

As the final prayers concluded, the mysterious girl turned abruptly and walked away. Miles and Ethan imdiately excused themselves. They followed her quickly, observing as she raised her hand and booked a passing taxicab. Miles and Ethan hailed another cab, instructing the driver to keep a discrete distance from the one ahead.

Inside her cab, the girl, whom they suspected was Ava, was quietly wiping away tears. She was consud by sadness, unaware of the two detectives tailing her.

The chase led them away from the grand, quiet avenues near the cetery and into a different part of the city. The streets grew narrower, the asphalt pitted with wear. The apartnt buildings were older, made of worn red brick with chipped paint on the window sills, and the windows were smaller and closer together. The air here slled faintly of coal smoke and cooking grease, a sharp contrast to the antiseptic air of the hospital and the grandiosity of Jas’s mansion. This was clearly a working-class neighborhood.

The cab carrying Ava finally pulled over on a street lined with uneven cobblestones. Miles and Ethan instructed their own driver to stop a block away, then continued the pursuit on foot, keeping to the shadows of the building stoops. "Where the hell does she think she’s going to?" Ethan muttered.

"We’ve got her now, if fortunate we might even have to interrogate the two couples," miles replied.

Ava walked quickly into a modest two-story ho. The door was opened by a man who welcod Ava with a passionate kiss, and the instant they saw him, Miles knew he was not the Adrian described in the diary. This man was well built and rugged, with striking black hair and intense black eyes, and his attire was casual, not the "sharp tie" Katherine had noted. Ava was clearly dating soone new.

"They’re hiding sothing big," Ethan whispered, confirming Miles’s thought. "Adrian is out of the picture, and we need to know why."

Miles took a deep breath. It was ti to stop lurking. They left their hiding spot and walked directly to the front door. Miles raised his hand and knocked firmly.

The black-haired man opened the door, his eyes narrowed in confusion.

"We’re from the Aethelred Initiative," Miles stated, holding up his identification. "We need to speak with Ava."

The man hesitated, glancing back into the house, but the authority in Miles’s voice was undeniable. He sighed, stepping aside. "Co in, then."

The black-haired man stepped aside, allowing Miles and Ethan to enter. Despite the building’s worn exterior, the apartnt was a surprising contrast: fine and well furnished, with modern, comfortable pieces arranged neatly. The air was warm, and the soft lighting suggested a sense of dostic tranquility that imdiately felt at odds with the current situation.

As the detectives stood in the living room, a sound on the stairs announced the arrival of Ava. She descended quickly, her face pale, the remnants of tears still visible on her cheeks. When she saw the two n, Miles and Ethan, unmistakable in their caps and black coats and serious deanor, she froze on the bottom step. She knew they were either inspectors or Detectives.

From the stern, unyielding look on their faces, Ava knew instantly who they were. Her shock was noticed. Her eyes darted from Miles to Ethan, then to her new boyfriend, a desperate question in her gaze.

"Ava," Miles began, his voice firm and unwavering. "We are detectives, and we know you’ve been hiding. We need you to cooperate and tell us what truly happened to Katherine."

Ethan stepped closer, his imposing figure adding to the pressure. "We’re not leaving until we get the truth. And you are going to tell us the truth, for if we must know about any lies behind what you tell us, there is consequences Ava. Don’t make this any harder on yourself."

The two detectives exchanged a brief, knowing glance. With the diary, the stalker notes, and now Ava’s obvious fear, they felt the tangled threads of the case finally pulling taut. They were convinced they were just a step away from uncovering the dark secret that led to Katherine Vance’s death.
