Capítulo 1304: Chapter 144: Shift in Identity
“Impossible… This is impossible!”
Claire denied the outco Lu Li brought back. She didn’t believe Chris was a traitor, nor did she believe the gardener was Asamonsi.
“He looks like Asamonsi, his mories are Asamonsi’s, then he is Asamonsi.”
Lu Li repeated to her what Claire had once said.
Claire might question Asamonsi, but she wouldn’t question Lu Li: “Maybe it’s a misunderstanding…? Mother couldn’t possibly betray Midnight City…”
“You can confront Asamonsi directly.” Lu Li stepped towards the bedroom: “In the form of a dream.”
A few minutes later, Claire was quietly asleep on the bed, with the trusted number one Lizard Maid staying in the bedroom to guard her, Lu Li also entered the dream, awakening Claire’s consciousness that was imrsed in the dream, guiding her to the dreamlike glow waiting in the cetery.
Within the dream, Lu Li and Claire found themselves in a long gallery—the Hall of Honor at Giant Tree Academy.
The man before them stood reminiscing in front of a portrait of an unfamiliar professor. Long-haired, hooked-nosed Asamonsi didn’t appear somber; his face was as resolute as a knight’s.
Only Claire’s revulsion towards him resurfaced.
Asamonsi acknowledged Claire with a smile, then turned to Lu Li, placing his hand on his chest in salute: “Thank you, Exorcist. For allowing to exist in a human body.”
“I want to know everything that happened in Midnight City.” Even when dealing with the headmaster of Giant Tree Academy, Lu Li remained straightforward.
“And I too,” said Claire.
“This story might be a long one.”
The scene changed, with dream-owning Asamonsi leading them to the headmaster’s office, sitting by the fireplace where a match was burning, and coffee appeared out of thin air.
Lu Li caught the coffee floating in front of him: “Dreams can move very slowly. And your recovery is a phased victory, even if we do nothing next, it’s fine.”
The familiar environnt made Asamonsi relax: “Let think about where to start… Hmm… let’s start from when Chris lured to the Bottomless Abyss…”
On the eve of the March power struggle, Chris told Asamonsi about the disturbances in the Bottomless Abyss.
The Bottomless Abyss was the source of Asamonsi’s power, known only to a few, and Asamonsi never doubted Chris, entrusting the power struggle to her, then hurried to the Bottomless Abyss. There he was ambushed, resisted but was ultimately killed… At that ti, Asamonsi didn’t feel betrayed, he just thought he was too late.
“Then, the abominable beings who attacked didn’t know my soul was immortal, and I heard their conversation, ntioning a deal with the Dragon Mother.”
The Dragon Mother Chris—this was how the people of Midnight City referred to the vice-principal of Giant Tree Academy, who possessed the power of dragons.
“There’s more than one person called the Dragon Mother,” Claire couldn’t help but retort.
“Of course, I know this, which is why I never linked Chris with the Dragon Mother, thinking it was just a coincidence or conspiracy.” Asamonsi’s mood beca somber: “Until… I saw her embraced by the Earth Dwellers, erging from blood and fire, devouring my remains, corrupting my soul…”
The Immortal Asamonsi, people called the headmaster.
Because he was almost undying. But few knew the truth—Asamonsi’s soul belonged to the Bottomless Abyss, as long as it existed, so would his soul, and he wouldn’t die.
This included Chris.
Chris, knowing the weakness of the Immortal Asamonsi very well—an iron block can’t be broken with an iron pick but will rust from seawater.
Chris used the power of the Midnight Church to corrupt Asamonsi’s soul, bringing him down as the abnormal gardener of Midnight City.
Which is why Asamonsi never appeared in the Midnight City Illusion, and the Midnight Church never appeared in it.
“What was Chris’s purpose in doing this?” Lu Li restrained the excited Claire, temporarily following Asamonsi’s response and asked.
“I don’t know…” Surprisingly, betrayed Asamonsi didn’t know Chris’s motive either: “The corrupted has always been asleep, only recently awakened by you. For months I’ve never been this clear-minded…”
“What do you think it is?” Lu Li pressed on.
“Perhaps it’s related to the Keeper of the Realm.” The briefly conscious Asamonsi thought of a possibility: “Chris needs to devour mythic creatures to gain power… You’ve seen the Keeper of the Realm, its existence is like that of the legendary dragons.”
Chris and the Earth Dwellers, both coveting power, dealt with the Keeper of the Realm, and the swamp devoured Midnight City after losing its predator—a terrifying truth taking shape through pieced-together clues.
“Do you believe what he said?” Claire treated Lu Li and Asamonsi with two extres: extre trust and extre suspicion. “Asamonsi is not to be trusted.”
Lu Li’s eyes lowered slightly: “But he didn’t speak any lies, and indeed proved his identity.”
Both in mory and soul.
“Mother is not like that! In your mories…”
“Not all dreams are true, child.” Asamonsi looked pityingly at Claire, who was also betrayed, and by her closest kin: “They can be easily manipulated, and more sadly, the Midnight City Illusion might never have existed, rely a ga of deception played on you all by Chris…”
Thus Lu Li thought again of the Midnight City survivors who never sought him, and also Fudote, who once appeared in the illusion and survived.
“I don’t believe…” Claire could only repeat this phrase.
…
“Do you believe it?” Mother of the Marsh asked.
“I don’t know.”
“You’re always like this…” The rchant couldn’t properly convey the Mother of the Marsh’s feelings of helplessness: “Even with overwhelming evidence, you don’t draw conclusions.”
Lu Li didn’t answer, looking at the thin figure curled up on the bed.
Soon after, the rchant brought new inquiries: “And then?”
“I asked Asamonsi what to do next.”
…
“Exorcist, you want to find more survivors, right? I’ll help you, but only to so extent, I can’t expose myself…”
When leaving the dream, Asamonsi would proactively stitch together the corrupted soul’s flesh again, only in this way could it not be noticed by Chris.
“I can contact you through the dream,” Lu Li answered. “Do you know who the farm owner and the head chef are?”
“I think the head chef should be soone I know.”
“Who?”
“Don’t know yet.” Asamonsi gazed deeply at Lu Li: “Exorcist, Claire has been roused, I’m not sure if she has mories… she shouldn’t, otherwise you wouldn’t have been able to awaken , best if she doesn’t… Be wary of her, stay alert, don’t expose yourself…”
“This is what happened today.”
Lu Li concluded the narration.
“I’m sorry I cannot provide you with more solutions…”
“Protecting the Land of Light is enough.” Lu Li looked at Claire, curled up on the bed, enjoying her sweet dreams.
“So what are you going to do next?”
Lu Li’s gaze left Claire.
“Confirm that what Asamonsi said is true.”
