He'd known it was coming and he still needed a second.

Emily's hand pressed down hard over his, once, then let go.

He stood. The room went quiet. Twenty-four people watched him walk from the back row to the cleared center. He kept walking.

Karen stood at the center.

She was his height, almost exactly. He'd forgotten that, sohow. She always seed taller than she was. He'd been looking up at her since he was a kid and the geotry of it had never shifted in his head even though he'd caught up.

"Since the first day," she said, "Luca Rossi has been a mber of the IFC. He was among the first to be part of this initiative, before the Triumph Initiative existed, before there was a company to put his na on." She was talking to the room, but she was looking at him. "He reached Alpha Centauri in his first year of operation. He ca back with data that has changed the trajectory of everything discussed in this room today and the future of humanity. He is preparing for a second expedition that will extend the frontier further than anyone can imagine."

He could have done without the résumé reading, but Karen was going to Karen.

"By the authority of House Stevens, under the Patrician's charter, I na you Master of Venture."

She said it without ceremony. Karen did the thing and ant it, and that was the whole of it.

"Luca Rossi. You command a chartered expedition under House Stevens authority. You operate with the House's full weight behind you. You may command ships, personnel, and sub-masters. You represent this House abroad."

[System Alert: Nobility Title Extended]

House Stevens, recognized as a Noble House of Sol, has extended a Nobility Title.

Grantor: Patrician Karen Stevens [Rank: Patrician]

Recipient: Luca Rossi [Class: Starship Commander]

Proposed Rank: Master of Venture (Tier 3 Vassal Title)

Terms of Title:

1. The Recipient is recognized as Envoy and Representative of House Stevens, authorized to act in the Grantor's na beyond Sol

2. The Recipient commands chartered expeditions under House Stevens authority, with authority over ships, personnel, and sub-masters

3. The Title is Hereditary and Irrevocable by the Grantor

[Do you accept the Title?]

He didn't accept it, not yet.

"Why?" he said.

Karen looked at him the way she looked at questions she'd already answered in her head three weeks ago.

"Because you're going where I can't," she said. "I'm building the infrastructure. The academy, the expansion, everything that anchors Sol and what follows it. You're going past all of that." She paused. "Out there, soone has to speak for this House. Soone with the authority to say yes. To say no. To put this na on sothing and have it an sothing permanent." She held his eyes. "Why you specifically? Because I trust you. Not just to go. To represent us. To carry everything we are and use it the way I would if I could be there myself."

He looked at the room. These were the directors she'd assembled, each one vetted and chosen and here because she believed they belonged.

"Okay," he said.

"We found sothing," he said instead. "At Geneva. At the CERN facility, before the symposium. Zoe and I scanned it. Physical fragnt, not data. A piece of a ring." He stopped. "The multitool extrapolated the curve. It's one of 256 pieces. Whatever it is, it's between 600 and 800 kiloters in diater."

Karen smiled. He didn't know if she already knew or if she was just glad he was trusting her with it.

"We don't know what it is. A habitat, a ringworld, an installation, a stargate. We have no frawork for it. We don't know where the other 255 pieces are. We don't even know what Technology Level we're dealing with." He caught himself. "We have one piece and no idea what it's a piece of and it's the biggest thing I've ever seen data for and I can't stop thinking about it."

Karen put her hand on his shoulder.

"Luca."

He exhaled.

"We can figure it out together," she said.

He nodded and looked at the prompt on his display.

He tapped accept.

If you spot this story on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation.

He didn't know what that one ant.

Sothing settled on his left wrist. He hadn't moved. He looked down. The cuff was already there, seated against his skin, small enough that he'd almost miss it.

He pulled up the item interface.

[Venture Signet Cuff]

Technology Level: 9

Personal hardlight shield. Authority signet of a Master of Venture, House Stevens.

He was still reading when the surface shifted. The change was subtle enough that he almost missed it. Then the Saw-whet Owl was there, etched into the band. The lines were clean, the head turned, the sa bird that lived on every IFC logo he'd ever seen.

He looked up at Karen.

She was looking at his wrist.

"Thank you, Karen."

She put a hand on his arm for half a second, the sa gesture she'd used since he was sixteen. Then she let go.

He turned to go back to his seat.

The notification arrived before he'd taken three steps.

[Designate Headquarters Now?]

He stopped walking and he read it again.

He'd known a title like that probably ca with upgrades.

The Vanguard Bundles were what hit him. All eight configurations had been frozen behind the sa condition for months, waiting for a minimum of 20 mbers. The upgrades from the New Dawn portal had been sitting greyed out since before they'd left Midnight Veil. The bundles from the War Portal and the Varnathi ruins had been locked behind the sa needs headquarters condition they still hadn't been able to clear. He'd assud one slot, one configuration, one use.

Eight configurations. All of them unlocked at once.

The Armory, the Nanite Forge, the Colonization Package.

Karen hadn't given him a title. She'd handed him the keys to civilization.

He made it back to his seat and sat down.

Emily looked at him and smiled.

He held his wrist up slightly. The cuff caught the light. Emily looked at it, then at him.

Karen wrapped the eting in ten minutes. She was as efficient closing as she'd been opening.

Directors committed on the way out with the particular energy of people who've just said yes to sothing large and are already sorting through what it requires. Henrik wanted a eting with her logistics team about advance scouting protocols before the first construction site was selected. Priya asked about the asteroid belt extraction tiline and whether Resource Guild would be moving operations before the first platform was established.

Izumi caught Karen at the door before she could move on, Yuna a step behind her, and whatever she led with made Karen smile. Luca couldn't hear them across the room, but he could read the energy well enough: Izumi talking fast, hands moving, already three steps ahead into logistics questions that apparently couldn't wait. Karen listened, said sothing back. Izumi's face went from delighted to more delighted. Yuna was watching with the expression of soone who'd seen this before and still found it worth watching.

His father shook Karen's hand on the way out.

Luca watched that. His father and Karen had been family-adjacent for most of his life, moving in parallel without ever quite occupying the sa space. His father was a builder, Karen was a planner, and they'd coexisted for twenty years and never once shaken hands. His father extending his hand now, and Karen taking it, ant sothing. He didn't know exactly what.

David Stevens found him near the door before he could get through it.

He grabbed Luca's hand in both of his, the sa warm grip as when they'd arrived, except now he looked at the cuff on Luca's wrist first.

"She's had that figured out since you got back," David said. "Washington, the symposium, this eting. The title was always the last piece."

"Yeah." Luca looked at the cuff. "I worked that out around the ti the eting started."

"Did it bother you?"

"No," he said. "She gets the job done."

David smiled. "She does."

Emma found them before Luca could leave. She moved with purpose, the way Karen moved when she'd given herself exactly the ti she needed for a conversation and not a second more.

"Tell Ryan I'll send the formal request through Emily," she said. "And Zoe. I want her stellar cartography data. All of it, not the published summary. I know the rest exists."

"I'll tell them."

"I know you're leaving in June," she said. "I need what I can get before then."

He nodded.

She put her hand on his arm briefly. He'd never noticed before today that they had the sa gesture as Karen.

"Master of Venture," she said, and her smile had nothing of Karen in it. It was hers. "Go find sothing worth coming back from."

The Granite Hawk was at the jetbridge when they got back through.

Izumi was already in her seat, tablet out, dark circles ignored by force of will. Yuna sat beside her, watching Earth through the side window the slow careful way, like soone who knows how fast a view like that stops registering.

Luca dropped into the pilot seat. The headache behind his left eye was still there, louder now that there was nothing left to push it back. His stomach had settled from crisis to complaint. He'd live.

Emily left the copilot seat and sat down in his lap, facing him, her knees on either side of his thighs. He got his arms around her before she'd finished settling and he kissed her.

She kissed him back.

He wasn't sure how long they were at it. Long enough that he'd stopped thinking about the ring fragnt and the Vanguard Bundles and the 255 pieces he didn't have yet. Long enough that the headache behind his left eye had eased.

Soone cleared her throat.

Luca broke the kiss. Emily didn't move off his lap. They both looked back.

Izumi sat with her tablet face-down, her expression that of a woman who had decided, so ti ago, that she was paid to fly ships and not to have opinions about what happened in the cockpit.

"Whenever you're ready," she said.

Emily climbed off his lap. He pulled his interface up while his face was still warm and found a notification he hadn't opened.

[Vassal Objective: Act of a Founder]

He didn't like the word Founder. It sounded too much like responsibility.

The System had given him sothing to work with, an objective. This one had a na and no description attached to it. Figures.

He read it again, then closed it.
