"You know, when you said I should stay over, I assud you’d arrange a bedroom for . Any bedroom." Matthew stated in a prickly tone.

His eyes scanned the stack of hay in front of him, and a heavy frown painted his lips.

Mallory passed the helt to his side, and stepped into the stable, "Well, my family hates yours to the core, so I can’t have exactly have you waltz through the front door."

Sobered up, Matthew let out a harsh groan. "You’re too much."

She shook her head and leveled her eyes at the stacks of hay, "The stable was cleaned this morning, and I’ll bring you a pillow and a blanket to keep you warm." She said, lowering herself into a squat. "And see, this stack of hay isn’t all that bad, so might even think it’s comfortable." She responded, laying on her back.

Just as she was getting comfy, Matthew tossed his helt to the ground and slumped next to her on the stack of hay.

"Hey!" She sat up straight, flabbergasted at how unmannerly he acted.

"This stack of hay is nowhere near comfortable." He refuted.

Rolling her eyes she got up and kicked his helt at him, aiming at his stomach. "You know, I’m only helping you because you’re Thane’s younger brother. And it’s obvious, you need guiding."

"Of course you’d take pity on the unassuming younger Grayson. How kind of you."

Mallory mumbled on her way out, "Why do I even bother sotis?"

Matthew tried to stand up, but he decided against it, he turned to the side and rested on his arm, using it as a cushion.

"That damned wench." He cursed, nestling into the stack of hay.

On her way to her bedroom, Mallory contemplated in her head whether or not she was being too harsh on Matthew.

"I an, he did help back then, so he’s not completely bad. But...ugh!" She groaned, balling her fingers into tight fists, "He just gets so heated sotis..."

"What the hell are we going to do now that the marriage isn’t happening?!" Amanda’s loud whisper caught Mallory off.

She stood behind the pillar next to the balcony, where her parents were outside for a smoke.

"Patience dear, we’re almost there." Godfrey calmly said, then took a puff out of his cigar.

Amanda hissed and stole his cigar off his finger, "Almost there? Need I remind you that we are losing precious ti. We need to marry her off, at once. And getting her hitched to the Graysons is as good a deal as any."

Mallory frowned, wondering why her parents were just so obsessed with this idea of a marriage.

What was in it for them?

"You don’t think I know that? Thane is a very difficult man, he’s not going to divorce that woman..."

"Then we have to do sothing. That girl sits at ho all day and won’t socialize. She’s rejected all the suitors you picked, if care isn’t taken she’ll one day find out-" right in the middle of her mother’s rant, a phone call ca in on her father’s phone.

She quickly retreated, taking careful steps away from the pillar, hoping that she wasn’t noticed.

On her way to her bedroom her heart could not stop racing.

Why were they so on edge?

And what was her mother on about? What wasn’t she suppose to find out?

And most importantly, why would getting married fix any of that?

She could sense that there was more to this marriage than her parents were letting on, and she wanted to know why....

Brooke wheeled herself out of the elevator and made for the hospital exit. Since it was a private hospital, reserved for exclusive patients, there weren’t many people around, and no one dated to intervene.

No one save for Hannah and Gilbert.

"Mrs Grayson, where are you headed in such a rush?" Gilbert asked, following her from behind.

Brooke looked over her shoulder at Hannah who stood from a safe distance, her eyes cast downwards and her face contorted into a guilty expression.

"I’m getting out of everyone’s hair, so I won’t be considered so sort of liability." She spat out.

"But Mr Grayson-"

"Ugh! Enough! I don’t want to hear another word about him!" She cut him off, then wheeled herself away, her anger getting the best of her.

Gilbert looked to Hannah, "Go after her, Mr Grayson won’t spare any of us if anything bad happened to her."

Hannah pursued her lips, she knew that Brooke was mad at her the most for keeping this a secret from her. "I don’t think she’d want that-"

The ding sound of the elevator cut her off, followed by an announcent from Thane, "It’s fine, I’ll go after her."

Hannah looked over her shoulder, "Mr Grayson, you should rest up, the weather is very cold tonight..."

But Thane walked past her, "I’m okay. You two can be at ease, it’s not your fault, all this is my doing." He said then went outside, despite the security trying to discourage him.

Hannah let out a deep sigh, "Do you think they’ll be okay? He just woke up from a coma and Mrs Grayson is not in a right fra of mind right now."

Gilbert kept his eyes at the entrance, "I don’t think we should worry too much about them, Mr Grayson seed level headed when he left." He said then took a seat in the waiting room.

He gestured Hannah to sit next to him which she did.

"What about you? How are you holding up?" Gilbert asked.

"? I’m not sick, I’m fine." She answered.

Gilbert kept a straight face. "Hannah, I’m not stupid. It seed like you and young master Grayson had so sort of unresolved history."

Hannah’s face turned pale at the ntion of Matthew, "I thought you weren’t the nosy type old man."

Gilbert straightened his collar, "I’m just looking out for a colleague."

She reclined into the chair and stared at the ceiling, "We used to date."

"That much was painfully obvious." Gilbert retorted sharply.

Hannah turned to his side. "Doesn’t that surprise you? That soone like him would ever look the way of little ol’ ?"

But Gilbert did not share her train of thought. "You an soone as beautiful and intelligent as you are?" He asked, his tone sincere.

Hannah’s cheeks flushed from embarrassnt, "Hey, what’s with the random complint? That isn’t like you." She sat up straight and leveled her gaze, "Or what? You’re just trying to cheer up?"

"I’m not. I’m not that kind to dish out unrited complints." He turned to face her, "We may not have worked together for very long, but I do see your strengths and they far outshine your weaknesses."

Hannah tucked her hair behind her ear, "Sure, you say that. But the young master didn’t seem to share the sa sentint. To him, I was just..." she sighed bitterly, recalling the night of her seventeenth birthday.

Gilbert sensed she didn’t want to discuss it, so he got up and left for a while. Hannah pinched her temples, and muttered profanities under her breath.

"Way to butcher the mood." She thought aloud, only for Gilbert to return with two cans of soda.

"I couldn’t find any beer in the vending machine." He said, tossing her a beer.

Hannah looked at the soda can, impressed, "Straight laced Gilbert was seeking beer in a hospital’s vending machine? That’s unexpected."

Gilbert cracked open the can and took a gulp, "Just drink your soda."

She chuckled, her grip on the can tightening, "Thank you Gilbert, for staying with tonight."

He nodded, "Taking care of those two is a tasking job, it wouldn’t hurt to sotis take out a bit of ti for ourselves. To remind us that we’re people too, and we have our lives to look forward to."

Hannah stared at the can warmly, "You’re right."

"I always am." Gilbert chid.

Hannah laughed and cracked open her can, she took a long gulp out of it, relaxing her shoulders and closing her eyes....

Outside the hospital, Brooke could feel the cold more than ever, she wished she had a jacket or even a sense of what direction she was headed.

She didn’t want to take the car because Thane would find out where she went. And at the mont she wanted to be away from him, away from everyone else.

Her mind was so preoccupied with her thoughts, that she didn’t realize when she had wheeled into the streets, or the car speedily approaching from a close distance!

"Aaah!" Brooke scread, covering her ears and closing her eyes, bracing herself for the impact she had no ti to escape from.

Fortunately, just as the car was about to hit her, a strong pair of arms pulled her away from the road and dived into the pavent, averting the crisis.

"Are you okay?" Thane’s voice whispered softly into her ears.

Brooke’s racing heartbeat cald down at the sound of her husband’s voice. "Mr Grayson." She called out, making sure it was him.

"I’m here Brooke, I got you." He said and kissed her head.

She held onto his arm tightly, still reeling in the shock of almost getting killed.

Unfortunately, she didn’t get much ti to recover, when the man behind the wheel of the car jumped out, tipsy and angry as hell.

"You blind bitch! Couldn’t you see where you were going?!" He raised his voice at her.

Brooke peeked out of his embrace at the man shouting at her and gasped. In shock, she pulled away from his arms, and tried to stand up, but her leg wouldn’t let her.

"Hey, be careful." Thane said, hooking his arm around her waist, supporting her balance.

The driver scoffed, "Look here missy, I couldn’t be bothered about your suicide wish, just don’t jump in front of my-" right in the middle of his scolding, Brooke cut him off.

"Dad?" She called out, staring at her mother’s first husband, the man who was ant to be dead...
