John held the edge of the marriage licenses tightly.
In the past thirty years, there was only one ugly photo of him, and it was attached to his marriage licenses.
What irritated him most was that he looked ugly in the photo while Nina looked beautiful.

With the two marriage licenses in his hand, he turned around and left.

He was worried about his father's health.
Sam had kept John's photo with him for more than ten years. He should have rembered it. However, he did not rember the photo until Jake reminded him. John was afraid that Sam might be starting to lose so of his ntal faculties.
John also saw that Sam's hands were trembling earlier while he was holding the photo. He was old but not old enough to lose control of his body. John thought he should see a doctor imdiately.
When John was about to head back to North Yard, Dora appeared out of nowhere and dragged him to their house.
