Qin Lun’s eyes flashed. He found an empty sofa and sat down, starting to rest with his eyes closed. But inside, he grew even more excited because he sensed so kind of aura from the other three people.
In other words, even if these three hadn’t yet attained the Heart of the Strong, they already carried the powerful aura characteristic of a certain profession.
“Judging from the two choices in the Guidance Mission, even the lowest level official Hunter should possess that kind of Nen Ability aura. At the very least, they belong to the Professional Apostle level, perhaps even at the initial peak stage just before breaking through to the Heart of the Strong.” Qin Lun quickly reached a startling conclusion in his mind.
“Just how many experts with the level of an official Hunter exist in this world? If an official Hunter is already at the initial peak stage of an Apostle, then this place surely can’t lack experts of High Rank and Legendary levels. No wonder the world’s difficulty reaches the absurd rank of Colonel…”
Qin Lun’s curiosity grew stronger and stronger, his thoughts racing a thousand miles a second. Just as he was lost in thought, a pleasant voice reached his ears.
“Sir, would you like sothing to drink?” Qin Lun opened his eyes and found the blonde maid who had brought him to the living room standing beside the sofa holding a tray. On the tray were several different colored drinks and alcoholic beverages.
“Get
a fruit wine that isn’t too spicy,” Qin Lun said, eting the maid’s light blue eyes with a smile.
The maid slightly lowered her head, avoiding Qin Lun’s gaze, and took a glass of amber-colored alcohol from the tray, handing it to him. Just as she was about to leave, Qin Lun reached out a hand to stop her and asked with a smile, “How long will the testing here last?”
“Sir, it will continue until early tomorrow morning. However, you have already passed the selection. If you need to rest, we have prepared guest rooms on the second floor,” the maid replied respectfully, bowing slightly.
“Take
to a room,” Qin Lun said, swirling his glass. He glanced at the other three people in the living room and stood up from the sofa.
“Certainly, sir!” The maid turned and led the way, but a hint of surprise, barely noticeable, flickered in her eyes.
The guest room in the villa wasn’t luxurious, about the sa as a regular motel. However, being able to arrange such a room in teor Street was quite good. It seed this place was likely a permanent base set up in teor Street by so violent organization.
After escorting Qin Lun to his room, the maid didn’t imdiately go back downstairs. She stood still for a mont, lost in thought, then turned and went up to the top-floor attic of the villa.
Pushing open the attic door, she entered a room filled with electronic equipnt. The wall facing the door was stacked with nurous monitoring screens, displaying views from inside and outside the villa, including the living room where the three teor Street thugs were and Qin Lun’s room.
In a recliner in front of the monitoring screens sat a young man wearing a white suit. Hearing footsteps behind him, the young man asked without turning his head, “So, is there any problem with the newcor, Number Four?”
“His identity should be fine. The intense indifference towards life typical of teor Street thugs can’t be faked. But I keep feeling there’s sothing odd about this person…”
As the blonde maid spoke, she twisted her supple, boneless body as if doing soft gymnastics, while simultaneously rubbing her face with both hands. After completing these movents, her originally plain appearance underwent a dramatic change, transforming into a beautiful woman with an hourglass figure and an oval face.
That wasn’t the most surprising part. The most astonishing thing was that the maid’s blonde hair and skin tone actually changed into black hair and yellow skin without any dye.
“Heh, your ability is truly incredible. No wonder you’re known as the best at disguise in the organization, ‘Chaleon’,” the young man in the white suit said, deliberately putting on a heartbroken tone. “We’ve been partners for two years, and aside from your appearance, I couldn’t even tell if you were male or female. It’s really sad!”
“Enough, let’s get to business!” Chaleon took a pair of gold-rimd glasses from the maid’s pocket and put them on. Instantly, even her aura transford into that of an intellectual beauty. She said seriously, “Silver rcury, that Number Four’s Nen field just clashed with yours. Did you notice anything?”
Hearing Chaleon’s words, the young man in the white suit, Silver rcury, also turned serious. He thought for a mont before speaking. “Number Four has already awakened a Nen field, which ets the organization’s recruitnt requirents. However, he doesn’t seem to know how to use Nen Ability. It should be a natural awakening. He probably hasn’t ventured outside teor Street yet.”
“Hmm, I saw the clash between your Nen fields. His Nen field seed to have an unusually devouring quality. It’s a pity he can’t control it freely yet, which fits your assessnt.” Chaleon furrowed her willow-leaf eyebrows, speaking with a bit of confusion. “What I find strange is this: when I was receiving him just now, I felt his manner of speaking didn’t resemble that of a teor Street thug with no experience of the world…”
“Oh, why do you say that?” Silver rcury felt sowhat surprised.
He and Chaleon were the examiners overseeing this recruitnt drive. One of them assessed the combat abilities of the rcenaries, while the other observed their personality traits, so the organization could better win over these teor Street thugs with great potential.
“teor Street lacks resources. Numbers One to Three, who arrived first in the living room, basically didn’t recognize the drinks I served them and just chose randomly. Moreover, even though those three knew the selection would last until dawn, they still chose to sit stiffly until morning, maintaining absolute vigilance, just like previous teor Street rcenaries.”
Chaleon said with a hint of sarcasm, “Due to their past habits, these people rely too much on physical strength. They don’t understand the balance between work and rest. There are many aspects they’ll need to readjust to when they go out into the world. But Number Four is different from them. Not only does he speak naturally, but he also knows how to relax properly, understanding how to make the most of every bit of his stamina. He’s probably an extrely experienced adventurer.”
“Heh, I felt sothing was off earlier, and listening to you now, I understand.” Silver rcury suddenly pointed at one of the monitoring screens. “Look at that Number Four. How natural he is in the room, just like he’s in his own ho, not seeming awkward at all. You’re right, he must have left teor Street before.”
Chaleon stared at the screen for a while, then covered her mouth and chuckled lightly. “Indeed, places like this villa are rare in teor Street. For those who’ve never left teor Street, it’s like a luxurious palace. No one is as relaxed as he is. Silver rcury, do you think he could be a spy sent by a rival organization?”
“Send a spy into teor Street, just to infiltrate a mafia syndicate’s rcenary team?” This ti, the young man in the white suit didn’t agree with his partner. He rolled his eyes amusedly. “Even if he has left teor Street and awakened his Nen Ability, it doesn’t necessarily an he encountered a strong person to teach him, right?”
“Maybe I overthought it.” Chaleon shook her head, smiling wryly.
teor Street wasn’t exactly a great place. If soone wanted to infiltrate a mafia syndicate, there were plenty of channels; there was no need to first sneak into teor Street.
Compared to the world’s population of billions, Nen Ability users could almost be described as rare as phoenix feathers. Although everyone has Life Energy within their bodies, very few actually awaken their Nen Ability.
Most crucially, Nen Abilities co in many varieties, with huge differences between individuals. Unlike traditional martial arts, they don’t form systematic inheritance schools. Moreover, most strong Nen Ability users are elusive, focused on their own dreams, and unlikely to stay long in one place to teach disciples.
This was also the main reason why this world ford the individualistic “Hunter” system, rather than other martial arts schools.
Seriously speaking, apart from a few large organizations like the Hunter Association and the Sky Arena, it’s hard for young people seeking power to find places to learn Nen Ability. So even if Qin Lun had left teor Street, awakened his Nen field, but hadn’t systematically learned Nen Ability, it wasn’t entirely unreasonable.
“I’m exhausted. Looks like no one else will pass,” Silver rcury said tiredly, stretching as he stood up from the recliner.
As he stood up, the workbench in front of the recliner was revealed. On the workbench was embedded a hemispherical crystal, inside which was a small model identical to this villa.
This was a defensive device for the villa, capable of spreading a Nen field for early warning and protection.
The nacing Nen field outside the villa was precisely what Silver rcury had spread using this device. Otherwise, with his strength, he couldn’t expand a Nen field to such a range. Using a Nen field full of malice to envelop the area near the villa was just right for testing the rcenaries coming for the selection.
As soon as Silver rcury removed his hand from the crystal hemisphere on the workbench, the Nen field outside the villa imdiately vanished.
“Wait, I’m not ready yet!” Chaleon cried out in alarm, flustered as she rushed forward and pressed her delicate hands onto the crystal hemisphere.
“Heheh!” Seeing Chaleon in her maid outfit bending over the workbench, a mischievous glint flashed in Silver rcury’s eyes. His right hand darted out in a ‘fishing under the sea’ move, swiftly groping her private area under her skirt.
“Bastard!” Chaleon angrily lashed out with a flying kick, but Silver rcury was prepared. He hopped away like a rabbit and escaped out the door.
Chaleon’s charming face turned alternately black and white with anger. She looked at the hemisphere under her hands, had to suppress her rage, and plopped down into the recliner, taking over Silver rcury’s work.
anwhile, Silver rcury walked in the hallway, holding up his offending right hand with pretended seriousness, muttering as if it were a matter of great importance: “So that’s how it is, so that’s how it is!”
The night passed without incident. When dawn ca, Qin Lun woke up naturally in the guest room.
“It seems there really was only one test.” He pressed his left eye and removed “Gannett’s Left Eye”.
Qin Lun had already figured out that Chaleon wasn’t an ordinary maid. An ordinary maid wouldn’t be sent by the mafia syndicate to teor Street to serve newly joined rcenaries. Naturally, she should be one of the examiners for this selection.
Last night, he was outwardly relaxed but inwardly alert. Although he said he wanted to rest, he still wore “Gannett’s Left Eye”. If the selection wasn’t over yet and the examiners prepared a sudden night attack, he could still react at the fastest speed.
Going down to the living room, Qin Lun found the sa three people still there. They hadn’t slept all night and had remained upright there. Although their faces were calm, being in a tense state all night inevitably left them sowhat ntally fatigued.
So pastries from yesterday were still on the living room coffee table. Qin Lun unceremoniously helped himself and started eating them.
“Alright, the selection is over. Get ready, we’re leaving imdiately.” Just as he was halfway through eating, a pleasant voice ca from the living room doorway.
