The Dark Guild mbers hadn’t all rushed toward the sa shelter, and there was a clear, selfish reason for that. Dark Affinity didn’t grow as a collective blessing, it grew for the individual who delivered the killing blow. Only the one who ended a life received the surge of power.
So when the Dark Guild scattered and spotted a massive group heading toward the first shelter, the rest had split off, veering sharply through the shattered streets of the Underside. They dashed in different directions, heading for the remaining shelters like predators dividing the herd. Each one was eager, desperate, to claim their own victims, their own growth, their own shot at becoming strong enough to “save” the Dark Magus.
They expected terrified civilians.
They expected helpless Undersiders.
They expected easy kills.
But they were wrong.
The very mont the first wave of Dark Guild mbers reached one of the shelters, a blinding arc of blade-energy ripped through the air. A massive crescent of destruction, the Eclipse Strike, hit the front lines before anyone could even fully register that soone was waiting for them.
Bodies flew back. Limbs twisted. Screams echoed.
And then Liam appeared behind another mage, his movent so sharp it cut through the air like lightning. His sword, his all-cutting sword, sliced downward, cleaving straight through his opponent as if their robe, enchantnts, and bones were all paper.
Liam spun the blade, exhaling. “This is a lot easier than the other guy,” he muttered, rembering the masked Cerberus mbers. “You can’t regenerate. This might not be too bad after all!”
The second shelter wasn’t any easier for the Dark Guild either.
Da stood in front of it like a wall of living muscle and fury. His hybrid form lood over the terrified mages who’d charged in expecting minimal resistance. Instead, they t a Pagna warrior whose fists moved faster than most people’s thoughts.
Da didn’t cast spells. He didn’t need to.
He raised his arm and swung.
A massive wave of force crashed into the oncoming attackers, like a boulder slamming into water. The Dark Guild mbers were flung backward, so rolling across the ground, others crashing into broken stone walls.
Pagna warriors fought differently, brutally, physically, without waiting for mana to gather or spells to complete. Mages had no idea how to handle that. Many had never fought a trained Pagna warrior before, let alone soone like Da.
Their spells shattered under his blows. Their barriers crumpled.
To them, Da might as well have been a monster wearing a human’s face.
And then, at another shelter entirely, the scene was far worse.
It was a massacre.
B stood alone in front of the entrance, her hand slowly raising as small spheres of spinning blood lifted around her like orbiting moons. Each bead glowed with a crimson aura, infused with Blood Qi so dense it warped the air.
She flicked her wrist.
The beads launched forward, not as droplets, but as projectiles sharper than steel. They tore through defensive spells like wet paper, ripping holes straight through the skulls of incoming Dark Guild mbers. One by one they fell, collapsing like puppets whose strings had been cut.
B’s expression didn’t change. She didn’t even blink.
“I thought you mages were supposed to be more difficult to deal with than us Pagna warriors?” she scoffed. “But it seems that’s not the case. Your world doesn’t even limit your power, and yet you’re still like this?”
When she spoke about “limits,” she ant the restraints on Pagna warriors who reached the Divine Stage, limitations that didn’t exist here on Alterian soil. And yet, despite having no restrictions, these mages weren’t remotely challenging.
It was almost disappointing.
Almost.
Still… one particular mage weighed on her mind.
‘The one Raze is fighting… that one is different. He uses Qi, a Qi like mine, and it’s troubleso. Even with all this, even with all my power, that fight wouldn’t be simple. I don’t know how he’s going to deal with that one.’
Her lips tightened.
If even she didn’t want to interfere with Raze’s opponent, then the situation must be truly dangerous.
Back at Alen’s shelter, the group continued battling, even without knowing that the others were performing just as well. Yet despite their relative success, dread continued to twist in their stomachs. Every additional minute ant more Dark Guild mbers spilling out of the tunnels, desperate to reach other shelters.
That fear proved justified when the worst possible thing began to unfold.
A massive sphere of Dark Magic slamd into one of Alen’s solid earth walls. The mont it struck, the wall didn’t just crack, it shattered, exploding into dust and rubble.
Then sothing crawled out of the darkness.
Long, writhing limbs, tentacles made entirely of shadow, burst from the hole. They shot forward with sickening precision and stabbed through four n instantly. Two were Alen’s. Two were civilians who had defected from the Dark Guild just monts ago.
Their screams didn’t last long.
“Londo!” Kelly shouted, her voice cracking.
She leapt forward, imdiately attacking the monstrous shadow entity. But calling it a “creature” didn’t feel right. It had no face, no true form, just darkness molded into a shape too twisted for words.
Londo joined her, lightning crackling violently as he struck.
Alen unleashed fire from above.
Wave after wave of spells collided into the shadow puppet.
But,
Nothing.
No damage.
Not even a dent.
The magic dissipated as if swallowed.
When the barrage ended, the puppet stepped through the smoke, towering, horrific, and horribly familiar.
A Dark Puppet.
One they had all witnessed before. One they feared more than nearly any other spell in the Dark Guild’s arsenal.
But this…
This version was larger.
Its limbs were thicker. Stronger.
And protruding from its back, like the legs of so nightmarish spider, were six additional arms, writhing and reaching.
Kelly’s breath froze.
“If that thing is here… that ans Harvey is here too!”
And she was right.
As the puppet shifted aside, Harvey stepped into the open space in front of the shelter. He erged from the shadows calmly, robes brushing across the dirt, his expression warped with confidence, no, with divine self-righteousness.
Behind him, the loyalist Dark Guild mbers fanned out like an army that had finally found its commander.
Harvey lifted his chin.
“You three,” he said, voice cold and accusing, “have caused a major disturbance among the Dark Guild. You are confusing our mbers. Weakening their resolve.”
His eyes narrowed, glowing faintly with Dark Affinity.
“And for that…
you must be eliminated.”
