The shadows of people swayed inside the house, and outside, on the luxuriant branches of the yellow eucalyptus tree, a hint of sadness flickered in the girl’s eyes.

A figure quickly glanced at the woman’s helpless silhouette inside the house and whispered, "Mom, you’ve really changed. You used to tell that when others encounter difficulties, we must extend a helping hand," the round-faced girl’s cheeks puffed up, and she clenched her hand tightly.

This afternoon, after breaking up with Xiao Xian, Zhang Yiyi went to jog a few laps on the track at Cornell University to digest food.

When she finished running and was about to leave, she saw the baseball team of Cornell University training there.

In the United States, baseball is much more popular than basketball. Yiyi didn’t really understand baseball, but seeing the intense training of Cornell University’s team, she stopped to watch for a while.

As Yiyi found it dull and turned to leave, she saw a woman.

A Chinese woman, holding the hand of a black-haired, blue-eyed little boy, stood by the track with a smile, focused on watching the team in training.

The woman didn’t notice Yiyi, who stood dazed in the corner of the field. She may have forgotten Yiyi, after all, mother and daughter had been apart for ten years.

Yiyi still rembered that at the ti her mother left her, she was about the sa age as the mixed-race little boy her mother was now holding.

After training, the coach of the Cornell University baseball team, a burly man nearly two ters tall, ca over, picked up the little boy, and left laughing with the woman. From start to finish, the woman didn’t notice the Chinese girl standing in the corner of the field, watching them leave.

Driven by a mysterious force, Yiyi quickly ran back to the apartnt, left a cryptic note for Xiao Xian, and followed the woman and her new family mbers to their new ho in the Bronx District.

As night fell, Yiyi realized that this area was very unsafe.

Scantily clad prostitutes solicited custors everywhere, and drunks with empty bottles leered and chatted up people nearby. To avoid unnecessary trouble, Yiyi simply climbed a tree. She also considered calling Xiao Xian, but couldn’t find a public phone booth at the mont.

The shouting in the park went from high to low, and the desperate screams of the woman pierced Yiyi’s eardrums. She could no longer hold back and slid down the tree, running toward Hudson Park.

Hudson Park was just one street away from Vilone Street.

The dilapidated streetlights left only a bare lamp post, coldly watching the tragedies unfold in the park. A vandalized trash can lay sideways on the road.

The man widened his eyes in terror, and the woman was pinned to the ground.

"Bang," a yellow trash can flew over and hit one of the n about to commit the cri.

"Who is it?" The few criminals stopped and cursed, the spring knives in their hands flashing nacingly.

"Let her go," Yiyi didn’t know how to express it in English, so she simply spoke in Chinese.

"Asian? Korean or Japanese," a few black n murmured. The white man with a lighter ignited the fla, and after seeing who it was, they all burst into laughter.

Standing not far away was a teenage girl with Asian features, wearing sportswear, and with a ponytail, her eyes wide open.

She wasn’t short, but her flushed round face matched with her slightly childish voice, made the group of thugs laugh even more.

"Asian pig, get out of here at once. The Bronx is black territory, or do you want to join us for so fun too?" One of the black n spat, signaled his partners, and swaggered over to Yiyi, reaching out to touch her face.

"——————" A blood-curdling scream pierced through Vilone Street.

"Who wants to try next?" The black man who had approached was kneeling on the ground, his arms twisted into a braid by Yiyi, his leg pinned down, and his bones making a horrific cracking sound.

"Chinese, she’s a Chinese who knows martial arts," the other two thugs changed their expressions, one of them groping in his pocket.

The dark muzzle was aid at Yiyi.

"Bang bang bang," the screams were replaced by gunshots.

After the gunshots, even the timid and cowardly residents of Vilone Street couldn’t sit still; soone called the police.

"Did soone fire a gun?"

"Has the police been called?"

"I seed to hear a woman’s cries."

"No, it’s a man’s screams."

By the ti the police cars arrived, the incident in Hudson Park had already subsided.

One thug lay on the ground, groaning in pain.

The other two thugs knelt on the ground, hands on their heads, muttering, "God bless, I encountered a female ghost. Even a gun couldn’t kill her."

Zhang Yiyi’s mother was standing on the street holding Tommy and her husband, answering the police’s inquiries.

"Those gentlen in the park suspected of rape? We were watching TV at the ti, and we didn’t see anything," the baseball coach said righteously, resolutely refusing to admit he heard anything.

"Ma’am, did you hear anything?" the police officer asked.

Her husband signaled beside her, and the woman glanced at her son in her arms, about to shake her head in denial.

Among the crowd watching the commotion, there stood a few young n and won. One of them, a round-faced girl, stared at her.

With a slight twinge in her heart, the woman opened her mouth, then suddenly nodded: "Officer, I just heard a woman’s call for help."
