Chapter 69: The Strange Place
Using her X-ray vision, Linda instantly located Luke in the conference room. She walked to the door and, without hesitation, kicked it.
BANG!
The iron door folded like paper, bending ninety degrees, and flew out at a bizarre angle, smashing a large dent in the wall. The air instantly grew silent. Everyone stared in shock at the twisted tal and then at the enraged girl. They swallowed nervously, sinking into endless astonishnt.
She kicked the door into that condition with one blow!!!
Who was she?
Mike Sen from the Technical Departnt recognized Linda. He whispered,
"It's her—the one who ca for the job interview that day."
Barry Allen nodded, staring intently at the girl. His body was taut; if she tried to hurt anyone, he would intervene, even if it ant exposing his identity.
Today was his tenth day working here. It wasn't long, but it was enough ti for him to fall in love with the place. Show was different from other companies—it was free, unrestrained, and balanced creativity with a sense of life. The people here were all undoubtedly geniuses with distinct personalities. They didn't care if you had a stutter or lacked social skills; you gained recognition simply by proving your ability.
Barry liked this atmosphere.
Linda Danvers didn't care about anyone else's opinion. Her eyes were fixed only on Luke Shaw.
"Make them leave. I have sothing to ask you."
Luke said expressionlessly, "Wait outside. I'll talk to you after the eting."
Linda narrowed her eyes, about to act, when suddenly, an inexplicable fear spread through the depths of her soul. She frowned, confused. At the sa ti, an obscure gaze ca from the corner of the room.
A young man around twenty was sitting in the corner, staring at her with eyes that flashed with red electricity. The red electric light jumped back and forth, giving off an indescribably eerie feeling.
tahuman? Or sothing else?
Linda couldn't figure out the situation. She remained silent for a few seconds, then turned and left.
Phew!
Everyone inexplicably breathed a sigh of relief. The girl's presence had been too oppressive, like facing a prehistoric beast.
With her interruption, the eting couldn't continue.
Luke quickly gave a simple work deploynt, then returned to his own office, where Linda Danvers was waiting for him.
"What happened that night?"
"Didn't your friend tell you?"
Luke poured a glass of cold water, speaking while observing her deanor. He needed to figure out how much she rembered so he could take appropriate asures.
Linda's eyes flickered with confusion, then hardened with determination.
"Lisa said I jumped into the ocean and you rescued ... I don't think it's that simple."
"You definitely did sothing to ."
"That's a question I should be asking you."
"What do you an?"
Luke led her on. "Do you really not rember what you did that night? Think hard; you might recall it."
The girl remained silent. After a long mont, she said hesitantly, "I think... I was burned by fire, shocked by electricity. The water was very cold, and soone was talking into my ear, asking many questions. Oh, and a cannonball! I rember now, soone fired a cannon at my head."
"Was that person you?"
Luke started coughing violently, forcefully waving his hand while coughing.
"I really admire your imagination! Even if you were drunk, you wouldn't have a dream like that, would you?"
A dream!
Linda raised her eyebrows, looking confused. Paired with her beautiful face, she looked adorably dense.
Through this conversation, Luke gained a rough understanding of the girl's state. She had significant mory loss, forgetting even the details of their bet.
His expression beca serious.
"You were heavily drunk that night and started acting crazy, destroying things all over the place. You also said so things I couldn't understand, like Krypton, the House of El, and Zor-El..."
"I'm very curious. What is Krypton? What is the House of El? And Zor-El—is he your father?"
Linda's face changed drastically. She had forgotten many things, but not her origin. That was her biggest secret. How could an outsider know about it?
Damn it!
Was I really that drunk?
Luke pressed her relentlessly, giving her no ti to think.
"Miss Danvers, aren't you going to explain?"
"I... I don't know what you're talking about. I never said those things."
"Is that right?"
Luke gave a cold chuckle and continued,
"Then do you rember why you ca to tropolis?"
tropolis!
Right, why did I co to tropolis?
Linda frowned deeply, growing increasingly agitated. She clutched her head, shaking it back and forth.
Why tropolis? Why the leave of absence? Why can't I rember? Why is all of this happening?
And her head—why did it feel so foggy?
The girl forcefully pounded her head. The contact between her palm and her skull created one shockwave after another. The vibrations shook the very floor.
Luke swallowed, subtly retreating a few steps.
The She-Hulk's ntal state was very unstable. If things went wrong, she could easily turn into a lunatic. A maddened Kryptonian was equivalent to a human-shaped nuclear bomb ready to explode at any mont.
Suddenly, Linda looked up, and beams of deep red light began to coalesce in her eyes. "Tell , why did I co to tropolis?"
Luke swallowed again and quickly said,
"I think you ntioned looking for so kind of cousin."
Cousin!
Fragnted images surfaced. She rembered—Kal-El! The purpose of coming to tropolis was Kal-El! But why was she looking for Kal-El?
"Why am I looking for Kal-El?"
Luke's expression was strange. Did I fry her brain? She couldn't even rember sothing so important. He said slowly,
"I don't know who this Kal-El you're talking about is. You didn't ntion his na."
"Kal-El is my cousin, he... he..."
Before she could finish, she was lost in thought again.
Luke didn't interrupt. His mind raced. After weighing the pros and cons, he decisively abandoned the idea of recruiting her as a bodyguard. The girl's ntal state was too unstable; she was no different from a ntally ill person, and a ntally ill person won't listen to reason.
After thinking for a mont, Linda asked again,
"Besides my cousin, what else did I say?"
Luke feigned helplessness. "Miss Danvers, your state is very odd. I suggest you go to the hospital for a checkup. A doctor can help you recover your mory."
"I absolutely will not go to the hospital."
Linda waved her hand irritably. Just then, the door opened, and lissa walked in.
"Linda, are you okay?"
Seeing her friend, the girl's frantic emotions cald down. She asked, confused, "Why are you here?"
"It's all because of you."
"Charlie just called and told you kicked the conference room door down."
lissa pressed a hand to her forehead, looking helpless. She turned to Luke and apologized,
"I'm so sorry for causing such a huge inconvenience."
"It's fine."
Luke smiled dismissively, a strange look in his eyes. "Your friend might have a problem with her head. I suggest you take her to a hospital."
lissa gave an awkward smile and pulled her friend away.
Shortly after they left, Luke picked up his phone and called Charlie.
"Co to my office. I need to talk to you."
