--------------------------------------------------------------

At night, riding inside an AV, Karl looked down over Night City through the clear interface of the CrystalBall system.

"First ti we've used an AV for a mission," Oliver said, gazing out at the glittering cityscape. His eyes lit up, and an uncontrollable smile crept onto his face. "It's gorgeous from up here."

"Gives you that god's-eye view of the whole city, huh?" Jackie stood by the hatch, eyes locked on Night City's two tallest buildings in the distance. "Looking down on Arasaka Tower and the Militech building from up here... they don't seem so big anymore. I spent half my life staring up at those things."

"Funny how that works," Karl said.

Oliver glanced around, then turned to Karl. "It feels totally different from standing on the ground. In the Badlands, I felt free. But here in the city? Skipping traffic, soaring above the lights in this AV—it's a whole new kind of freedom."

"It's convenient, yeah. But also a magnet for attention," Karl said. "We're lucky we're in City Center. Try showing up in this thing in a rougher district and people would've clocked us instantly. We'd lose our target before even setting boots on the ground."

"I an, worst case, just chase 'em in the AV," Jackie offered, arms folded as he eyed the 300-ter drop. "They're not all gonna dive into the sewers or sothing."

"I'm more worried about getting shot down from this height. That's a bad ti."

"Seriously, you guys planning your crash landing already?" V chuckled from the pilot's seat. "This AV's shielded. It could take a direct RPG hit and still stay airborne. And if it did get targeted, we've got enough ti to dive before impact. Relax."

"I don't know. I still trust the pavent more than the sky," Jackie said, shaking his head. "Karl, do we have a fix on our target?"

"Yeah, thanks to T-Bug. Half an hour ago, Jas Reddington—the guy who created Shimr—showed up near an alley. Walked in, never ca out. V, I'm sending the coordinates. Let's move."

"Already on it. Not even two klicks away," V replied. "Guess this joyride's gonna be short."

"Take it for a spin later. You've got full clearance now," Karl yawned. "anwhile, T-Bug's probably curled up in bed. anwhile I'm stuck working."

"C'mon, she did all the heavy lifting today," Oliver pointed out. "Without her, we'd be hunting this guy for days. Let's wrap this up and hit the sack. I only started feeling human again after dinner."

V grinned.

Technically, the gig wasn't urgent—Dino had given them two weeks. They'd picked it up that morning, and honestly, they'd expected T-Bug to need a few days to pull a location. Instead, she cracked it in an afternoon. Naturally, that ant jumping on it right away.

Tough break for Oliver. Sim drills all morning, hauling stock all afternoon, and now a night mission.

"Best to get this crap out of the way early," Karl said, watching the AV descend. When it reached about five ters above the ground, he popped the hatch and jumped.

He landed smoothly, facing the alley entrance.

"Let's move."

The others followed one by one. As soon as they were all out, the AV handed over to autopilot and began ascending.

"Another perk of AVs," Oliver said, watching it rise. "Don't need to leave anyone behind to babysit it."

He rembered the ti their car got jacked. Looking around, he noticed a crowd gathering—people curious about the fancy vehicle and the crew jumping out.

"What're you staring at?!" he snapped.

A few bulky, rough-looking guys didn't like that. They'd just co over to see who had rolled up in such a luxury AV, and this punk was glaring at them?

Bet he's so corpo punk. Let's see how smug he is when he's bleeding out on the sidewalk.

One of them stepped forward, hand moving toward his weapon, clearly ready to teach Oliver a lesson.

Then Karl looked back.

"Don't start anything. Let's go, Oliver. Mission's what matters."

'Oliver?'

The thug froze. That na… he knew it. Everyone in Night City did by now.

And then he really looked at Karl—black hair, piercing eyes, calm and deadly aura.

That face.

Recognition hit like a freight train. His blood turned to ice.

He wasn't so random punk. He was Karl.

And standing beside him was Oliver.

The sa Oliver who'd torn through gangs and walked away smiling. The sa Oliver from the headlines.

His hand was still on his gun when Oliver turned and glared at him.

"I'm coming, I'm coming!"

Oliver shot him a final glance before jogging after Karl, Jackie, and V. "I was hoping to test how far my training's co anyway."

The thug froze in place. He didn't move again until the crew disappeared into the darkness of the alley.

Only then did his knees give out. He collapsed to the pavent, staring at his trembling hand, still resting on his weapon.

"Oliver… K-K-Karl… Oliver…"

That look.

He finally understood.

That look had ant:

"Draw, and you die."

He'd drawn slow—and lived.
