The stillness of the ruined Azure Echo Sect had beco a quiet companion to Rin. It had been days since the death of the wandering cultivator—days since his first human kill—and yet, the weight of that mont pressed on him like an invisible stone lodged in his chest. The lingering feeling of fury, of power unleashed, had subsided only in the most fleeting of monts. The Death Refinent Core inside him had begun to hum a dark lullaby of destruction, and his body felt like a vessel teetering on the edge of a chasm, one misstep away from falling into the abyss.

And yet, despite all this, Rin moved forward. There was no other option. The ruins offered no answers, only fragnts of the past—fragnts that Rin couldn't afford to linger on. His only true direction now was toward understanding the power he had inherited, toward mastering it before it consud him as it had consud others. The landscape stretched before him—desolate and broken, a mirror to his own fractured existence.

Then, through the haze of his thoughts, sothing shifted in the air. A disturbance. It was subtle, the way the ground beneath him seed to tremble, the air seeming to bend in on itself, thick with the presence of soone approaching. His instincts scread a warning—danger. Rin's hand moved to the hilt of his dagger, the cool, familiar pulse of the Death Refinent Dagger now an extension of himself.

But the figure that erged from the shadows of the wreckage was not an enemy. Not imdiately.

A man, walking through the ruins with slow, deliberate steps, ca into view. At first glance, he appeared to be no different than any of the other survivors or scavengers Rin had encountered since his awakening. His robes were ragged, patched and torn from the ravages of the land, yet they carried an air of importance that marked him as a figure of status. His dark hair was cut short, his face youthful but hardened with ti, and his eyes—those eyes—burned with a familiar coldness that Rin couldn't quite place at first.

Then, like a bolt of lightning, the realization hit him.

Xuan Lu.

His sworn brother.

The na rang in Rin's ears, echoing like a forgotten lody. The years that had passed since he had last seen Xuan felt like a dream. They had been inseparable once—two bright, ambitious youths bound by their shared goals and the unwavering belief in the Azure Echo Sect's ideals. They had fought together, laughed together, and swore oaths to each other. But the mories of those tis were clouded now, tainted by the rot of betrayal and the hunger for power that had consud them both.

Xuan's gaze t Rin's, and for a mont, neither of them spoke. There was only silence, thick with unspoken words and the weight of everything that had transpired since the fall of the sect.

"You," Rin finally breathed, his voice a hoarse rasp, as if the very na that fell from his lips was a curse. "Xuan Lu."

Xuan smiled, but there was no warmth in it. His eyes glead with a predatory glint, an unmistakable malice that made Rin's blood run cold. "So, the cursed survivor walks. I wondered when you'd crawl out of your grave, Rin. It seems death has claid us both in different ways."

Rin felt the familiar rage rise in him at the sight of his forr brother's smirk. The mories of the past—of the promises they had made, of the bond they had once shared—seed like cruel illusions now. Xuan was not the sa person he had been. No, this man was a shadow of the friend Rin had once known, twisted by ambition, greed, and betrayal.

"What have you beco?" Rin asked, his voice trembling with the mix of fury and disbelief. "What happened to you, Xuan?"

Xuan's smile faded, replaced by a look of cold indifference. "What happened to ? I grew, Rin. I realized the truth. The Azure Echo Sect was weak, led by outdated ideals. Power, true power, is not earned by following the rules or protecting the weak. It's taken. It's seized. You were too blind to see it, but I saw the path."

Rin's heart clenched in his chest as Xuan's words hit him like a blow. The idealism they had shared, the dreams of elevating the sect to greatness, had all been shattered. What had driven Xuan to betray everything they once stood for? What twisted belief had replaced the camaraderie they had shared?

"You betrayed the sect," Rin said, the words sharp, cutting through the air like a blade. "You betrayed ."

Xuan's eyes narrowed, the slightest flicker of emotion crossing his face before it was swiftly masked by a cold expression. "Betrayed? No, Rin. I freed myself. I took what I deserved. I've been hunting the power that you now hold—the Death Refinent Dao. And you're a fool if you think it can be controlled without sacrifice."

Rin's grip on the dagger tightened, the dark energy within him thrumming in response to the anger coursing through his veins. He had thought the betrayal was a wound that had healed over ti, but hearing Xuan speak, hearing the cold, callous way he dismissed everything they had once stood for—it was like ripping that wound open again.

"You've always been a coward," Rin spat, unable to control the bitterness that oozed from his words. "Taking power from others, using them as stepping stones to climb higher. And now you've co to take my power. What will you do with it, Xuan? Will you corrupt it just as you've corrupted yourself?"

Xuan's lips curled into a tight smile, the smile of a man who knew he was in control. "Don't mistake my ambition for weakness, Rin. I have a purpose. And now, with the Death Refinent Core, I will ascend far beyond anything the Azure Echo Sect could have offered. Your power will be mine. You can either surrender it to , or—"

His words trailed off, and Rin could see the intent in Xuan's eyes. The sa hunger that had once burned in their shared dreams now burned in him alone. Xuan was no longer the brother Rin had known. He was a stranger, an enemy—a man consud by his thirst for power.

"Or what?" Rin's voice was low, cold, as the dagger pulsed in his hand, responding to the malice in the air. "You'll kill ? Is that it, Xuan?"

Xuan's smile faltered for the briefest mont, and the flicker of doubt was enough to confirm what Rin had suspected. Xuan had co here to take Rin's power by force. His betrayal had been years in the making, and now, he intended to harvest what Rin had beco—a broken thing, a weapon to be wielded.

But Rin wouldn't let that happen. He wouldn't be the one to fall again, not like this.

"I won't let you have it," Rin said, his voice steady, his resolve hardening. "I won't let you take what I've beco. You've already stolen enough from , Xuan. This ends here."

Xuan's eyes darkened, and the air around them crackled with an unseen tension. For a long mont, neither moved. It was as if the world itself held its breath.

And then Xuan's hand shifted, drawing a weapon from his belt—a long, curved blade, dark and gleaming with death energy. It was clear that he had co prepared for this confrontation. But Rin was ready. The Death Refinent Dagger humd, eager, the dark energy swirling around him as if it too thirsted for the blood that would be spilled.

Without another word, Xuan lunged.

The battle between them was more than just physical. It was the clash of ideals, of broken bonds, and of power stolen and now sought again. The sound of steel eting steel echoed through the ruins, a sharp, bitter symphony that would play out to its inevitable conclusion.
