Chapter 720: Chapter 713: Undercover Agent?
In the thick of the night, the man in black robes who had sped past Chen Hai had dwindled to a faint shadow.
Though curiosity killed the cat, and Chen Hai was very much a man, seeing the elusive figure raised a few strands of curiosity in his heart.
“Follow him and see what he’s up to?”
This thought popped into his mind inadvertently, yet he hesitated, still not fully commited.
“That man has clearly reached the Golden Immortal Realm. Although I’m equipped with the Concealing Breath Technique, tracking such a powerful being could still lead to unexpected incidents.”
“But if I follow at a distance, and remain cautious, it’s unlikely he would detect my presence!”
“Just like just now, when he dashed by ten ters ahead of without sensing my hidden presence, right?”
…
As the man in black was about to disappear from sight, the curiosity in Chen Hai’s heart finally repressed any other thoughts he might have harbored.
Gritting his teeth, he erged from his hiding place and followed the direction in which the man in black was heading.
Wanting to hide his tracks while running at full speed was beyond Chen Hai’s capabilities.
The figure ahead was stronger and of a higher realm, and his pace was much faster than Chen Hai’s.
Just following from a distance and not being able to maximize his speed, Chen Hai could only keep up for a short while before the gap between them widened.
Initially, the man was just a tiny dot in his line of sight, but within a few monts, he had completely vanished.
After chasing another hundred ters, a sowhat disheartened Chen Hai was ready to head back.
However, just as he was about to give up, the shadow that had vanished reappeared in his vision.
At this mont, the man in black had stopped walking.
A mature tree with the girth of an adult’s waist stood where the territories of the Demon Palace and Heavenly Mansion intersected, and the man in black had now crouched at its base.
The distance between them was too great for Chen Hai to see what the man was doing under the tree.
As he deliberated whether to continue sneaking closer, the man in black stood up. He didn’t continue forward but turned back the way he had co.
Seeing this, Chen Hai was startled and quickly found a depression to lie low and hide his body as much as possible.
Fortunately, his luck held, and the man in black passed near the depression he was hiding in.
The man’s footsteps didn’t stop, and he showed no signs of anything being amiss—it seed the Concealing Breath Technique was indeed effective. Even though this man was a Golden Immortal, he still hadn’t noticed Chen Hai lying in the depression just a few ters away.
Of course, this outco was largely due to the man not intentionally searching the surrounding area.
If he had stopped and searched the vicinity carefully, Chen Hai’s traces would probably have been impossible to conceal.
“Should I continue following that man to confirm his identity and find out who he really is?” Seeing the man walking further away, after widening the gap from his hiding spot, Chen Hai stood up from the depression.
His gaze flickered uncertainly as he stared at the receding figure, silently pondering.
However, the thought lasted only a few monts before he dismissed it himself.
After all, he had just been tracking that person, and even a small distance nearly caused him to lose the trail entirely.
Given that he was considerably slower than that person, Chen Hai chasing after him in hopes of tracking him all the way to his lair and figuring out his true identity had virtually zero chance of success.
“Forget it, just head to that big tree where the person was just now and see what the situation is!”
After pondering for a mont, Chen Hai quickly made a decision.
rging into the night, his form flickered, and in less than a breath, he appeared beneath that big tree.
At the spot where the person had just crouched, Chen Hai crouched down as well, his gaze sharp as he sized up every inch of the area around him.
Soon, he found a small hollow in the roots of the tree and reached into it to pull out a small piece of irregularly shaped wood.
Despite the thick night, Chen Hai’s eye-sight swiftly discerned so odd symbols deliberately carved into the wood.
Unfortunately, what did those symbols an? They were beyond what Chen Hai could guess.
After inspecting the small piece of wood over and over and pondering for a while, he eventually stuffed it back into the hollow.
Then, he withdrew to a suitable location hundreds of ters from the big tree and again went into hiding.
More than half a two-hour later, another shadow flew from the direction of the Demon Palace mine, arriving at the tree.
Beneath the tree, the shadow likewise crouched for a while, soon stood up, and vanished into the side of the Demon Palace mine.
Once he was sure the person had left and there was no one else nearby, Chen Hai finally erged from his hiding spot.
The small hollow that had held the wood was already empty.
The items inside had definitely fallen into the hands of the latter shadow and been taken back by him.
“Indeed, the symbols carved on the wood must be so sort of code.”
“If I’m not mistaken, the previous person in black must be a hidden agent of the Demon Palace within the Heavenly Mansion.”
“By leaving the wood in the hollow and having it taken away by the latter shadow, they are using it to pass so sort of ssage.”
“It’s just a pity, I can’t recognize the symbols on the wood, so I have no idea what they actually an!”
Cautiously returning to the tree, Chen Hai checked the hollow in the roots and frowned, speaking to himself.
He was a person who generally didn’t like to ddle in others’ affairs, preferring to quietly cultivate.
But now, the covert agent of the Demon Palace in the Heavenly Mansion, was passing a ssage through that piece of wood—who knew what it was?
What if, by leveraging the ssage in the wood, the Demon Palace was preparing to attack a certain area in the Heavenly Mansion? Or perhaps, the two powers were preparing to wage outright war?
Due to the mining area, the conflict between the two great powers had never ceased—night raids? Or surrounding and annihilating the opposing patrol squads, such incidents occurred daily.
If it were just minor skirmishes, they wouldn’t have made it so secretive.
After all, the two shadows transmitting ssages through the wood were both Golden Immortal level powerhouses, neither from the Demon Palace nor the Heavenly Mansion were re minions, they surely held significant power.
The issues related to ssages passed by such powerhouses couldn’t be trivial.
