"Outrageous or not, it doesn’t change the fact that I have pleted the mission," said the woman.
"You—"
"If you insist on continuing this fight, I’ll be more than happy to take his place," she interrupted as Captain Gu opened his mouth. "Or do you only prefer opponents who are unconscious?"
Captain Gu gritted his teeth in frustration, but there was nothing he could do in this situation.
Not only was it no longer possible for him to kill Yuan without ruining his career in the military, but he had utterly no chance of defeating the woman standing before him.
With no other choice, Captain Gu pulled back his arm and said, "It’s just a misunderstanding. I wasn’t actually going to hit him. I just wanted to see if he was faking it."
Without elaborating further, Captain Gu turned around and quickly left the scene.
The woman didn’t pursue things further and immediately went to pick Yuan up, taking him away.
Some time later, Yuan slowly opened his eyes to find himself lying on a bed in a quiet room.
Of course, he was conscious the entire time, but pretended to be asleep until he was finally alone.
’That was...’
Although Yuan didn’t get to see the face of the individual who stopped Captain Gu, as she’d immediately left after bringing him to the room, he recognized her just from her voice alone.
Suddenly, he heard the door to the room being opened.
When he turned to the sound, he could see two figures entering the room.
One of them was Mei Xiaoyun, and the other was Mei Feng.
"Are you okay?" Mei Xiaoyun asked him.
Yuan nodded with a smile, "I’m not hurt in the slightest."
"You know you won’t die if you stop acting tough for a second, right?" Mei Feng sighed while shaking her head.
Yuan chuckled.
"I am being serious, though. I know it looked brutal, but his attack didn’t even land on me."
Yuan patted his stomach aggressively to show them he was perfectly fine.
He then asked, "So, what happens now? Are you going to punish that soldier for attempting to kill me?"
An apologetic expression appeared on Mei Feng’s face as she responded, "Unfortunately, it’s not that simple. Not only is he a Captain, but he’s also General Gu’s nephew. Not to mention the trial in itself is meant to rough up the recruits."
"But he used Limitless during the fight, and as far as I am aware, that’s not allowed. Surely, you can punish him for that," Mei Xiaoyun said.
Mei Feng shook her head. "Actually, there is no explicit rule prohibiting the use of Limitless during the fight."
"No way... so we’re just going to let him get away with almost killing him?" Mei Xiaoyun frowned.
Yuan then said, "That’s perfect."
"What?"
The two ladies turned to look at him, their eyebrows raised, puzzled by his words.
"There’s no need to punish him because I will do that myself," he elaborated.
"What do you intend to do to him?" Mei Feng asked with a slight frown, looking concerned.
"Nothing... at least not right now," he shrugged.
Mei Feng rubbed her eyes and sighed aloud, "Forget it. I don’t care what you do as long as you don’t kill him."
"Anyway, with the recruitment done, you’ve officially joined the military and are a soldier now."
"Never thought I’d join the military again..." Yuan muttered in a low voice, his eyes suddenly full of nostalgia as he recalled his life in the military as Tian Xian, even though it was vastly different from his current situation.
"You’ve been in the military before?" Mei Xiaoyun asked, looking confused.
"Yes, in my original world."
"..."
After a moment of silence, Mei Feng turned to look at Mei Xiaoyun and said to her, "Go outside for a bit. I need some time alone with him."
Mei Xiaoyun nodded and left without question.
Once they were alone, Mei Feng said to Yuan, "Now that you’re a soldier, let’s get some things straight."
"First, regardless of your capabilities, you must obey anyone with a higher rank than you. Even though we’ve only spoken a few times, I have a good grasp of your personality, and if you want to stay in the military for long enough to learn about Gaia, you must obey our rules."
"I will do my best," Yuan replied.
"Second, because of your performance during the recruitment, you have been granted an exemption from the mandatory year-long boot camp that every new recruit must plete, allowing you to skip it entirely and begin serving as a soldier immediately."
"Furthermore, for hitting the 10,000-meter target during the third trial, you’ve been granted an entire month’s worth of leave that you can use at any time. This is something that would normally take an ordinary soldier five whole years to accumulate."
"For hitting the 20,000-meter target, you will be able to request personal training from an elite soldier, so someone at the rank of Sergeant."
"As for hitting the 40,000-meter target, you will receive a direct promotion to the rank of Private First Class. Everyone starts out at the lowest rank, Private, upon joining the military, and it can take anywhere between two and five years to be promoted to Private First Class, depending on their merits."
"Now then... You also broke the records for every trial during the recruitment. In recognition of such an extraordinary achievement, the military has decided to grant you another direct promotion—to the rank of Corporal, a position that normally takes ten years to reach after being a Private First Class."
"Any questions so far?"
Yuan smiled and said, "I believe you are missing one more reward."
His gaze turned to look at the door behind her, or more precisely, at Mei Xiaoyun, who was standing outside.
Mei Feng sighed. "Don’t worry, I haven’t forgotten about our deal. I’ll reward you for persuading her to join the military, but it will take some time to prepare. And since I want to keep it a surprise, I won’t tell you until then."
