Despite her calm appearance, Mei Feng was anything but calm. In fact, her heart was burning with fury.
’Even though he has the Perfected Heavenly Refinement physique, he won’t be able to deal with a Fourth Ascension cultivator without using Limitless. Not to mention, his opponent is a Captain,’ Mei Feng thought to herself.
However, something in her gut told her not to worry about Yuan.
’He’s far too calm...’ Mei Feng narrowed her eyes at Yuan’s nonchalant expression, giving her the impression that he was not worried about Captain Gu in the slightest.
Although that did not pletely alleviate her concern about the situation, it was enough to help her to not freak out about the situation.
"General... Are you sure we should just sit here and do nothing?"
Meanwhile, her rades viewed the situation differently, mistaking Yuan’s calmness for shock.
Mei Feng shook her head and said, "Did you really think that I would let such a prominent recruit participate in the recruitment without supervision? I knew General Gu would do something, but even I could’ve never anticipated he would do something this bold. He won’t die, at the very least, so you can all relax."
"If you say so..."
They sat back down and continued watching the events unfold.
On the stage, Yuan smiled.
"I didn’t know the soldiers could use their cultivation for this," he remarked.
Of course, they were not allowed to use their cultivation, but Yuan already knew that.
"Now you do!" Captain Gu shouted as he charged at Yuan, his speed several times faster than before.
"Now this is a little more entertaining," Yuan chuckled, still somehow managing to react and dodge Captain Gu’s attacks.
"Stop running away like a cockroach and fight me!" Captain Gu roared.
"Fight you? Without being able to use Limitless? You might as well tell me to jump off a bridge—not that it would kill me."
Yuan continued dodging Captain Gu left and right, which left the spectators speechless.
"What the fuck is that idiot doing?!" General Gu slammed his desk in anger upon witnessing Captain Gu’s humiliating performance.
"How hard is it to take care of a single recruit?! He’s even using his cultivation!"
"Well... in Captain Gu’s defense, he cannot make it too obvious, or—"
The individual who had just spoken hastily closed their mouth when General Gu suddenly glared at them with a cold, dangerous gaze.
One minute... two minutes... five minutes...
Soon, the amount of time Yuan and Captain Gu spent on the stage surpassed that of any of the recruits before them, and as Captain Gu’s embarrassment grew for not being able to hit Yuan, he stopped caring about concealing his intentions and began using Limitless for real.
"C-Captain Gu’s using his Limitless without restraint now! This is my first time seeing such a serious fight during the recruitment!"
"Because as far as I am aware, it has never happened before..."
"I thought we weren’t allowed to use our cultivation for this...?" Someone who had participated before mumbled out loud.
"Well, nobody is stopping them, so Captain Gu must have received permission."
"Even so, I think they are going overboard..."
"I think so, too. Captain Gu is fighting like he wants to kill that recruit."
"I don’t blame them. That recruit is a freaking monster."
The spectators were divided over the situation. Some felt Captain Gu was taking things too far, while others believed such measures were necessary to deal with someone as powerful as Yuan.
"Unbelievable..." The soldiers in Mei Feng’s private room were bewildered by Yuan’s performance.
"Just where in heaven’s name did he learn to fight like that?!"
"Those movements are something you can only learn through experience and an unfathomable amount of time... but he doesn’t look anywhere old enough to have even half of such experience!"
While everyone was baffled by his bat capabilities, Yuan was starting to get bored with the whole thing and wondered how he should handle the situation.
’Should I just defeat him?’ he wondered inwardly.
But after some consideration, he decided not to do anything that would draw more unnecessary attention to himself, especially since he already had a target on his back.
If he defeated Captain Gu right now, he would have to deal with those in an even higher position, which would only make things more plicated.
’There are still many things I need to achieve in the military, so it would be unwise to offend too many people now.’
After sighing inwardly, Yuan suddenly pretended to stumble, deliberately leaving himself open.
Captain Gu did not miss the opportunity and immediately took advantage of it.
"DIE!"
The next moment, Captain Gu drove his fist into Yuan’s stomach—or at least, that was how it appeared to the spectators—sending Yuan flying off the stage and crashing into the crowd.
However, despite being certain that he had struck Yuan, Captain Gu could not shake the feeling that something was wrong.
’I need to make sure he’s actually dead!’
Without hesitation, Captain Gu leaped off the stage and launched another attack at Yuan, who lay unconscious among the crowd.
"?!"
The soldiers surrounding Yuan were stunned by Captain Gu’s actions, yet not a single one of them dared to intervene—not that they could do anything without their cultivation.
However, just before Captain Gu could reach Yuan, someone appeared before him like a ghost, catching his fist that would’ve directly smashed Yuan’s head into a bloody mess.
"What do you think you’re doing?!" Captain Gu immediately turned to look at the individual who stopped him.
"I should be asking you that question, Captain Gu. Why are you still attacking him, even though he’s clearly unconscious? Are you actually trying to kill him?" A woman’s voice responded to him.
"Y-You are—!" Captain Gu’s eyes widened with surprise when he finally realized who had blocked his attack. "What the hell are you doing here? I thought you left for a mission!"
"I was on a mission, but I already pleted it," she calmly responded.
"You pleted a mission that was estimated to take over a year in just a month?! That’s outrageous!" Captain Gu exclaimed in disbelief.
