In response to Zhao Sheng's bizarre tone, Master Jiu Chi laughed without concern and said, "Brother Zhao, don't bla for not reminding you. You care about the mortals, but the Human Clan will not appreciate your sentints. Be careful not to displease both sides! Don't forget the old Human saying, 'Those not of our kind have different hearts.'"

Zhao Sheng raised his eyebrows upon hearing this and looked at the aningful Master Jiu Chi but did not retort.

Seeing this, Jiu Chi was certain in his heart and imdiately pursued his advantage, saying warmly, "I heard you were going to Refugee City just now. I happen to be free. I might as well accompany you."

"This trivial matter does not require your esteed presence," Zhao Sheng replied, trying to decline.

"No worries. I have nothing better to do, and it would be good to catch up with you. When we return to the Spiritual Abyss, I might even ask you for a favor," Jiu Chi said shalessly, without any intention of maintaining the image of a True Immortal in front of his junior.

Master Jiu Chi treated Zhao Sheng as an equal, even with a hint of ingratiation.

This was not only because Zhao Sheng had been chosen by the Ice King, who held a high position and wielded great power, and would beco a major figure in the Demon Ruins after ascending to Nascent Soul,

but also because he was one of the Ice King's people. Making friends with Zhao Sheng ant currying favor with the Ice King.

Additionally, he saw the potential in Zhao Sheng and intentionally befriended him early.

Shaless, and thus invincible!

Seeing this, Zhao Sheng knew he had no way to refuse, so he reluctantly turned his head and ordered the Ice Woman, "To Refugee City!"

No sooner had the Ice Woman bowed in agreent than Jiu Chi kindly suggested, "Hey, let my Hu Xiao carry us there! Refugee City is dozens of miles from here. Flying will be faster!"

"..."

Shortly thereafter,

Hu Xiao spread its wings and flew, carrying Zhao Sheng and Master Jiu Chi southwest toward Dragon Head Island.

Refugee City, located thirty miles deep within Dragon Head Island, was originally a large mortal city and was now temporarily used to detain mortal refugees.

Near Refugee City was the largest alluvial plain on Dragon Head Island, spanning thousands of miles; a renowned agricultural area that sustained nearly ten million of the Human Clan on Dragon Head Island.

As Hu Xiao ventured deeper into the island, Zhao Sheng was surprised to find that, apart from the workshops and cities along the coastal line that had been destroyed by sea beasts, the villages, towns, and cities inland were barely affected, with most remaining unscathed by war. The order was ticulous in the villages; the mortals worked from dawn till dusk, seemingly untouched by the great battle that raged dozens of miles away.

Seeing Zhao Sheng's astonishnt, Master Jiu Chi couldn't help but smile proudly and said, "Brother Zhao, are you surprised?"

"Indeed, I am surprised," Zhao Sheng openly admitted.

"Hehe! You're still inexperienced and don't understand the reasons behind it. The intricacies here are deep; not only you but even I only know a fraction of them."

"Oh,"

Zhao Sheng nodded thoughtfully but showed no intention of asking further.

Seeing this, Master Jiu Chi was montarily stumped, pondering how to intrigue his companion to inquire further.

Just then, Hu Xiao's wings snapped together and it suddenly dove downwards.

Below, a large ancient city spanning dozens of miles and featuring towering buildings appeared before everyone.

Thump!

Hu Xiao landed on a specially cleared square in the center of the city.

Zhao Sheng and the others dismounted from Hu Xiao, just as two pairs of people quickly approached the edge of the square.

Leading them were two bald giants nearly two zhang tall with bulging muscles, clearly recognizable as mbers of the Sea Giant clan.

Behind them followed a dozen or so listless Human Clan mbers, both old and young, male and female.

Each one wore a silver-white collar around their neck, and they were evidently all Cultivators.

"Who goes there? Please—"

Their speech halted abruptly midway.

At that mont, the Ice Woman pulled a round token made of thousand-year-old Ice Jade from her sleeve, engraved with an ancient rune on the front and an imposing ice peak on the back.

"By the Ice King's Order, withdraw imdiately!"

The two Sea Giants exchanged glances, knelt in unison, and saluted, shouting, "Understood! We take our leave."

Upon seeing this, the Human Clan Slave Guards kneeling behind them promptly rose and turned to leave in an orderly manner.

As Zhao Sheng watched the retreating backs of the Human Cultivators, his gaze grew profound and enigmatic.

Just monts ago, he keenly sensed that these people looked at him with fear and panic, yet among them, a few youths had eyes filled with deep resentnt.

Having spent a hundred years undercover, Master Jiu Chi's skill in observing and understanding people was undoubtedly fully developed.

He caught this scene and, feeling a surge of satisfaction, feigned pride and said, "Brother Zhao, did you know? Refugee City is almost autonomously governed by the Human Clan, with fewer than thirty of our people inside. Moreover, everyone in the city is well-fed and well-rested. Aside from the lack of freedom, life here is not much different from the outside.

We, the Spirit Clan, are a hundred tis more noble than the Human Clan. As long as these people stay here obediently, we have no need for despicable asures like torture."

Zhao Sheng asked solemnly, "How many people are here?"

"About five hundred thousand. The vast majority are mortals. Hehe, they are all direct relatives within three generations of Human Cultivators."

Zhao Sheng stood in the center of the square, fully releasing his Divine Sense. Continue reading on My Virtual Library Empire

Divine Sense spread out, scanning everything around him, seeing rooms, floors, and corridors full of people in the surrounding buildings.

Most of the people had expressions of sorrow and carried an air of fear and unease, but their complexions were rosy, seemingly never having suffered from hunger.

At that mont, Refugee City was extrely quiet, the air filled with a deathly and oppressive atmosphere.
