Hearing Rum say that this matter was related to Toru, Rena's heart tightened, and she listened intently.
No matter what Rum was going to tell her, she was prepared to relay everything he said to Toru.
"Kir, you know about the terrorist attack that happened at Shuchi'in Academy in Japan not long ago, right?"
"Even if I wasn't in Japan, it would be impossible not to know about it."
"Yes, the Organization has already investigated and learned from the Japanese Security Bureau that those terrorists were from a drug trafficking group in Colombia, and we know they were brought in by the Central Intelligence Agency."
Rum paused, then continued, "...According to the Organization's internal intelligence analysis, the real target of this group was not to kidnap the students of Shuchi'in Academy, but to kill Adam."
"But our informant within the Central Intelligence Agency did not receive any intelligence about it, which indicates that this was a mission known only to a very small number of Central Intelligence Agency personnel."
Rena did not speak and simply listened quietly as Rum laid the groundwork for the mission.
"We have no way of knowing why the Central Intelligence Agency wanted to kill Adam. He is Spencer's most outstanding adopted son and operative."
"Regardless of the reason, the outcome has already determined that the hatred between Adam and the Central Intelligence Agency is irreconcilable."
"Someone like Adam could not possibly let this go and pretend that nothing happened."
Rum's words made Rena's heart stir, and she whispered, "Do you want to recruit Toru, that is, Adam, into the Organization?"
"Hehe, you're right, Kir. Adam is an excellent talent. His strength is no less than Gin's, and he is not some reckless fool. He is smart. The missions he handled in the Central Intelligence Agency in the past could not have been completed by strength alone."
No less than Gin?
Rum's words made Rena complain inwardly. That was not just no less than Gin, that was far stronger than Gin, alright?
But why did the Organization want the Boss to join? The two sides clearly had deep-seated hatred.
Wrong!
Rena suddenly realized that on the surface, Toru seemed to have no connection with the Organization at all, and there was no hatred between the two sides.
Toru had once attacked the Organization's research facility, but at that time he was disguised and had not revealed his true face.
And earlier, at the aquarium, he had bombed Gin's helicopter and killed Tequila, but Toru himself had never shown his face, staying hidden in the parking garage the entire time.
Even now, the Organization still believed that the person who killed Tequila was Shuichi.
Because Shuichi had happened to be at the aquarium at that time.
Rena thought all this through in her heart, then cautiously asked, "Rum-sama, are you planning to have me contact Toru and invite him to join us?"
"Yes. You don't need to be too cautious. He knows about the existence of our Organization. You only need to tell him that as long as he is willing to join us and earn our trust, he will be free within the Organization. We can even help him deal with Spencer."
Inside a Mercedes-Benz on a street in Tokyo, a cold light flashed in Rum's single eye as he sat in the back seat.
He had long been displeased with Spencer.
Although the Organization cooperated with the Central Intelligence Agency, Spencer did not take them seriously at all, treating them purely as a tool and a useful dog.
As the second-in-command of the Organization, and with That Person not having appeared for a long time, Rum could almost be said to be the number one figure in the Organization. He was very dissatisfied with Spencer.
However, Spencer was, after all, the Director of the Central Intelligence Agency. The price the Organization would have to pay to kill him was too high, and the risk of failure was also great.
But if Toru could be recruited into the Organization and used as a pawn to deal with Spencer, then the Organization could minimize its losses.
If it failed, the Organization would lose nothing. If it succeeded, it would gain a powerful member. In Rum's eyes, this was simply a business with no risk and enormous profit.
Rum understood people very well. He knew that powerful individuals like Toru, especially those who walked on the edge of darkness, would never easily let go of hatred and would inevitably seek revenge.
Rena whispered, "Rum-sama, why not let Vermouth go? I heard that Vermouth is very close to him."
"Of course I know Vermouth is very close to Adam, but Vermouth's identity is special. She only listens to That Person, and I cannot truly order her around."
Rena's heart skipped a beat. From Rum's words, she heard ambition!
Rum probably wanted to replace That Person. He actually did not trust Vermouth at all, nor anyone close to That Person.
Rum's desire to recruit the Boss probably came from the same idea. He wanted the Boss to become his man, not just another member of the Organization.
Rena was excited.
Her father had died at the hands of the Organization, and she had always hated the Organization and wanted to destroy it.
But she had never found the opportunity, nor did she have the ability.
Now, Rena knew that this Organization was not united as one. Even the second-in-command had thoughts of rebellion. This was her best opportunity.
Rena immediately expressed her loyalty. "Rum-sama, I will complete this task for you."
She deliberately emphasized "for you," which made Rum very pleased.
He said, "Very good, as expected of Kir, whom I favor. Gin indeed went too far this time. I will speak to him."
After comforting his subordinate a little more, Rum said nothing further to Rena and ended the call.
Inside the Mercedes-Benz, Rum put away his specially made phone.
He looked at the busy traffic of Tokyo outside the window and whispered, "That Person hasn't shown up in a long time, and I can barely hear any news at all."
So, was he already dead?
But even if That Person was not dead, Rum still had ambition.
Although the leader of the Organization had always been That Person, in reality, it had been Rum who led the Organization forward over the past decades.
All of the Organization's plans and missions had been arranged by Rum and carried out by the people he sent. He had always regarded this Organization as his own.
It was only because That Person was too mysterious that Rum had not dared entertain other thoughts in the past.
But now that That Person had lost contact, Rum's ambition had completely blossomed.
...
"Toru-kun, you're not coming back tonight?"
After the competition and interview, outside the venue, Haruno looked at Toru in surprise.
Just now, Toru had told her that he would not be returning to the Yukinoshita family tonight because he had something to do.
"Yes, there are some important things I need to handle."
"Could it be that you're going on a date with Shizuka, Toru-kun?" Haruno asked suspiciously.
Beside her, Yukino also could not help looking at Toru.
Toru smiled gently. "Of course not. If you don't believe me, you can ask her."
Haruno smiled brightly. "I trust Toru-kun, and besides, I shouldn't ask too much about what Toru-kun wants to do."
Haruno knew very well that with a man like Toru, she absolutely could not control him too much or too strictly, and even less could she test his obedience, otherwise it would only invite his displeasure.
The best way was to go along with his thoughts.
"Toru-kun, do you need us to leave the car for you?"
"No need to trouble yourselves."
Toru refused Haruno.
"Haruno, go tell your mother I'm sorry and that she doesn't need to prepare dinner. Do you want to have dinner with me? My business will take a bit longer, but I'm free right now..."
Haruno and Yukino exchanged glances. They immediately gave up the idea of going home for dinner and went with Toru to a famous restaurant in Chiba Prefecture.
More than an hour later, the three of them finished dinner, and the Yukinoshita sisters said goodbye to Toru.
After seeing the two sisters off, Toru called a taxi and headed toward his destination.
The destination was extremely remote, located in the Chiba suburbs, with a small river flowing through it and farmland nearby. As far as the eye could see, there were no houses.
Summer nights grew dark slowly. It was already past seven in the evening, and the sky had still not fully darkened. Toru simply stood by the river and waited quietly.
Slowly, the setting sun completely disappeared, and the entire world sank into darkness.
Because the place was so remote, there was not even a streetlight here, let alone any pedestrians. The darkness was unsettling.
Not long after, a pair of headlights lit up in the distance. A BMW 5 Series sedan stopped by the riverside.
Rena turned off the car and stepped out. Seeing Toru standing in the darkness by the river, she called out, "Boss!"
Toru turned around and looked at Rena's shoulder in the faint moonlight. "You're injured."
"Boss, you noticed?"
"How did you get injured?"
"Earlier, I went to Europe to carry out a mission assigned by the Organization. The mission required me to kill an International Police agent. At the time, I couldn't bring myself to do it, and Gin injured me."
Rena said this while touching her shoulder with her hand.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"I didn't think such a small matter needed to be reported to Boss."
"If something like this happens again, remember to tell me."
Rena gave a soft response. She thought Toru wanted her to report on her work at all times.
Then Toru said, "If you're injured, I'll worry too. When I get the chance, I'll shoot Gin. Consider it revenge for you."
"Boss, you don't have to do that."
Warmth rose in Rena's heart.
Since her father died, no one had truly cared about her.
Rena had a younger brother, but because she was an undercover agent within the Organization, she did not dare have too much contact with him, so the two of them were almost completely disconnected.
And within the Organization, the higher-ups only assigned her missions, and someone like Gin would shoot her without hesitation, let alone truly care about her.
But Toru genuinely cared about her injury and even wanted to avenge her.
Rena was actually a very emotional person, otherwise she would not have hesitated so much when carrying out the mission assigned by the Organization.
Toru's words made her feel a kind of care she had not experienced in a very long time.
Rena's legs went soft, her pale cheeks turned red, and she whispered, "...Boss, I have something important to report."
"No matter how important it is, this little bit of time doesn't matter," Toru gently played with Rena's body.
Rena panicked, "Then can we change locations?"
"Isn't it good here, under the open sky and on the ground? This way, you can completely release your pressure. Sometimes people just need to do things that break the norm."
Toru withdrew his hand and opened it toward Rena, letting her see the glimmering moisture on his fingers, and chuckled, "Do we still need to change locations?"
Rena bit her lip and lowered her head shyly.
No need to change locations, she couldn't hold back anymore!
