One of the staff mbers, a middle-aged woman with kind eyes and graying hair, approached their group with a warm smile.
"Good morning, students. I’m Technician Reeves, and I’ll be overseeing your VR experience today. Please don’t be nervous – we’ve conducted hundreds of these simulations safely over the years."
She gestured toward the nearest row of pods, each one glowing softly with internal light. "The process is quite simple from your perspective.
"You’ll lie down inside the pod, place the neural interface headset over your temples, and then activate the system using the control panel near your right hand. The pod will do the rest."
Technician Reeves led them to a specific group of pods that had been prepared for their use, each one marked with a student’s na on a glowing display near the entrance.
Creed found his assigned pod and was impressed by how spacious and comfortable it looked inside.
The interior was lined with soft, cushioned material that seed to adjust and conform to his body shape even before he climbed in.
"Now, once you’re inside and the system is activated," Technician Reeves continued, "the pod will begin its scanning process.
This will take approximately two to three minutes, during which you’ll feel a slight tingling sensation as the enhanced sensors analyze your abilities, talents, and potential.
Don’t be alard by this, it’s completely harmless and necessary for creating your realistic personalized simulation experience."
She paused to make sure everyone was paying attention before continuing.
"After the scanning is complete, you’ll feel yourself becoming drowsy as the consciousness transfer process begins. This is normal and expected.
"Simply relax and allow yourself to fall asleep naturally. When you next open your eyes, you’ll be on Kepler-442c with your seven-hour survival assessnt beginning imdiately."
Creed climbed into his assigned pod, marveling at how the interior seed to perfectly accommodate his body size and shape.
The cushioned lining felt like the most comfortable bed he had ever experienced, and the neural interface headset was surprisingly light and unobtrusive when he placed it over his temples.
The control panel near his right hand looked complex but was actually quite intuitive, with clearly labeled buttons and a simple activation sequence.
Following Technician Reeves’s instructions, he pressed the series of buttons that would begin the process, and imdiately felt the pod co to life around him.
The scanning process was exactly as described – a gentle tingling sensation that seed to move through every part of his body and mind, as if invisible fingers were carefully examining every aspect of who he was.
Creed found the sensation oddly relaxing, and he could sense the incredible sophistication of whatever technology was analyzing him so thoroughly.
As the scanning continued, he found himself wondering what the system would discover about his abilities and personality.
This was quite worrying.
Would it discover the presence of the system? What would it recognize it as? And if it managed to recognize it, was that a good thing or a bad thing?
Most probably bad...
The tingling sensation gradually faded, replaced by a growing sense of drowsiness that seed to spread through his entire body like warm honey.
Creed’s eyelids beca heavy, and despite his excitent about the experience ahead, he found it increasingly difficult to stay awake.
The last thing he rembered was the soft hum of the pod’s systems and the comfortable feeling of being perfectly supported and safe.
When Creed opened his eyes again, everything had changed completely.
He was lying on rough, rocky ground under a sky that was the wrong color entirely.
Instead of the familiar blue he was used to, the sky above him was a disturbing shade of orange-red, with two suns burning in positions that made his eyes water when he tried to look at them directly.
The air itself felt different. It was thinner and harder to breathe, with a tallic taste that made his throat feel scratchy and uncomfortable.
And that was after the breathing device attached to his suit had been powered on. For the first few seconds, he couldn’t even breathe since this planet had no oxygen.
Sitting up carefully, Creed took in his surroundings with the kind of systematic observation that had beco second nature to him.
He was wearing what appeared to be a military-style uniform made from tough, durable material that felt slightly uncomfortable against his skin.
The uniform was equipped with various pockets and attachnt points for equipnt, though most of them were currently empty.
On his wrist was a device that looked like a cross between a compass and a magical display screen.
The compass part was pointing steadily in one direction, presumably toward the "ho base" that Instructor Varien had ntioned.
The screen part showed a countdown tir that currently read 6:59:42 and was steadily ticking downward – apparently, his seven hours had officially begun.
The landscape around him was unlike anything he had ever seen or imagined.
The ground was covered with sharp, jagged rocks that seed to absorb light rather than reflecting it, creating an unsettling effect where shadows appeared deeper and darker than they should.
Strange, twisted formations of crystal jutted up from the ground at irregular intervals, so of them glowing with an eerie internal light that pulsed like a slow heartbeat.
In the distance, he could see what appeared to be mountains, but they were the wrong shape and color for any mountains he had ever seen.
These peaks were too sharp, too angular, and they seed to shimr with heat waves despite the fact that the air around him felt uncomfortably cold.
The gravity on this planet was imdiately noticeable as being different from what he was used to.
Everything felt slightly heavier, as if he was carrying extra weight that made every movent require more effort than normal.
When he stood up, he had to adjust his balance to account for the way his body felt different in this alien environnt.
Even more unsettling was the complete silence. There were no birds, no insects, no wind, no sounds of any kind except for his own breathing and heartbeat.
The silence was so complete that it felt oppressive, like a physical weight pressing down on him from all directions.
Creed reached out ntally to contact his summoned companions, hoping that Lilith, Tierra, and redith might be able to help him understand this strange environnt and develop a survival strategy.
"Can you guys survive in this environnt?" he asked silently, focusing his thoughts on reaching them through their magical connection.
Lilith’s voice ca back imdiately, but there was a strain in her ntal tone that he had never heard before.
"This place is hostile to our kind of existence, master. The atmosphere lacks the magical energy we need to maintain our forms for extended periods."
"We could manifest for short periods if absolutely necessary," Tierra added, her ntal voice also sounding strained and uncomfortable.
"But probably no more than a few minutes at most before we’d be forced back."
"And that’s assuming the environnt doesn’t get worse," redith chid in with obvious concern. "This planet feels wrong in ways that are hard to explain. The magical fields are all twisted and unnatural."
Creed nodded to himself, having expected sothing like this.
It made sense that the simulation would limit his access to his most powerful abilities – otherwise, the survival challenge wouldn’t be much of a challenge at all.
He would need to rely primarily on his own intelligence, strategic thinking, and whatever resources he could find in this barren environnt.
Looking around more carefully, he began to develop a ntal map of his imdiate surroundings and consider his options.
The compass on his wrist suggested that the base was sowhere in the direction of those strange, shimring mountains, which ant he would need to cross a significant amount of hostile terrain to reach safety.
But simply heading directly toward the base wasn’t necessarily the best strategy.
Seven hours was not too long of a ti, still rushing blindly across unknown terrain without proper preparation could easily result in injury, exhaustion, or worse.
Instead, he needed to approach this systematically, gathering information and resources before committing to any particular course of action.
First priority was figuring out what resources were available to him. A careful search of his uniform’s pockets revealed several items that had apparently been provided as basic survival equipnt.
There was a small knife with a sharp, durable blade, a compact water container that felt about half full, so kind of concentrated food bars that looked and slled unappetizing but would presumably provide necessary nutrition, and a small device that might be so sort of ergency communicator or signaling tool.
Second priority was understanding the environntal hazards he would need to deal with.
The thin atmosphere and strange gravity were obvious concerns, but there might be other dangers that weren’t imdiately apparent.
The glowing crystals, for example, could be sources of beneficial energy or they could be deadly radiation emitters.
The complete silence might indicate a sterile environnt, or it might an that all the local wildlife was very good at staying hidden until the right mont to attack.
Third priority was developing a route plan that would get him to the base camp while minimizing exposure to unknown risks.
The direct route toward the mountains looked challenging but straightforward. However, there might be other options – perhaps a longer route that avoided the worst terrain, or locations where he could find additional resources or shelter.
Creed was just beginning to feel confident about his systematic approach to the survival challenge when the ground beneath his feet suddenly began to vibrate with a low, rumbling tremor that seed to co from deep underground.
At first, he thought it might be so kind of earthquake or seismic activity, but the vibration had a rhythmic quality that suggested sothing else entirely.
The vibration grew stronger and more pronounced, accompanied by a sound like distant thunder that seed to be getting closer with alarming speed.
Creed crouched down and placed his hand on the ground, trying to get a better sense of what was causing the disturbance, and imdiately realized that whatever was making this noise was both very large and moving directly toward his location!
Before he could react or move away from the area, the rocky ground around him suddenly exploded upward in a shower of sharp stone fragnts and choking dust.
Rumble!
Sothing enormous burst through the surface of the planet with trendous force, sending debris flying in all directions and creating a crater that was easily twenty feet across.
Rising from the crater like sothing from a nightmare was a creature that defied easy description.
It was easily as large as a two story building, with a thick, armored hide that looked like it could deflect sharp blows without taking damage.
Its body was roughly serpentine but supported by dozens of powerful legs that ended in claws the size of sword blades.
The head was massive and filled with teeth that glowed with an internal fire, and its eyes were like burning coals that seed to look directly into his soul.
But the most terrifying thing about the creature wasn’t its size or its obvious physical power; it was the overwhelming sense of malevolent intelligence that radiated from it like heat from a forge.
This wasn’t just a dangerous animal acting on instinct. This was sothing that thought, planned, and took pleasure in hunting and killing.
The device on Creed’s wrist suddenly began beeping urgently and flashing with red warning lights.
Looking down quickly, he saw text appearing on the screen that made his blood turn to ice in his veins:
"THREAT IDENTIFIED: GREATER BEAST LORD
DANGER LEVEL: EXTRE
RECOMNDED ACTION: IMDIATE RETREAT"
The massive creature rose to its full height, towering over Creed like a living mountain of muscle, armor, and malice.
It opened its enormous mouth and released a roar that shook the ground beneath his feet and seed to echo across the entire barren landscape.
Roar!
The sound was so loud and so filled with raw, predatory hunger that Creed felt his bones vibrate and his ears ring with pain.
Then, with movents that were far too quick for sothing so large, the Greater Beast Lord turned its burning gaze directly toward him and began to move in his direction with obvious and terrifying intent.
