Braelyn’s POV

"Why are you asking that question?" Lucien asked, his brows slightly furrowed as he asked that question.

I swallowed a lump as I tried to control my nervousness. I had asked the question based on impulses. I picked up my fork trying to eat my olette.

"I was just curious. " I muttered with a weak smile. His gaze lingered on for a while before he finally spoke.

"My grudge with Volkovs goes far beyond the death of my mother. " he finally said. His gaze hardened, as if he were being made to recall an unpleasant mory. Lucien’s jaw rolled a bit, his voice turned low, carrying a subtle chill.

"Her death was just one of the several reasons. You can think of it as a personal vendetta. I chose to be the villain in their story," he explained, then casually went back to his breakfast like he just didn’t swear to take great revenge on the Volkov family.

"They must have really hurt you. " I muttered, he smiled at my words. His gaze drifted to .

His face stiffened for a mont at my words, and a weak smile curled on his lips.

"They did," he replied, and the room fell silent as we both got lost in our thoughts. I went back to taking bites of my food. So far from Mum’s diary, I discovered sothing, but there were answers I was yet to get.

Why would soone want to threaten my life? Did the Orlov family know of Mum’s involvent, and did they want to take revenge on ?

In that case, did Lucien have a secret agenda against ? Could I really trust a man who wore several masks? The questions linger at the back of the mind. The more I thought of it the more uncertain I was about it

I hadn’t finished reading mum’s diary, but I wasn’t certain if I could believe her entries. After all, she was soone who couldn’t differentiate reality.

I wondered what happened to mum in the end, did she eventually die? Most importantly, why were Dad and Gregor adamant about my marriage? Did all these questions have a link?

A soft brush on my hand drew my spiralling mind from the hole it was falling into back to Lucien. He held my hand and his voice was certain. "You don’t have to worry. You would get back at them for every humiliation they made you suffer," he said like a silent promise.

His words tugged my heart. I rembered how Mum had described Lucien in her diary entry. The little boy who knew from a tender age that he wasn’t needed. The boy who was secreted cried, unable to understand why they hated him.

Lucien wasn’t born the villain; they made him bear the conscience of sins that weren’t his. He was conditioned into what he was now. It made wonder, what if Lucien had a different part...

No I couldn’t do that, the deed has already been done.

"By the way, we will be returning tomorrow afternoon" Lucien ntioned. My brows furrowed and we weren’t scheduled to return until a few more days. Lucien had rounded up the deal earlier than planned because of his personal relationship with the CEO of Genesis

Also, there weren’t any flights scheduled tomorrow back ho.

"I thought there weren’t any flights back for tomorrow. " I voice my concern

Lucien arched a brow at . "Who said anything about taking a public flight?" He laughed out loud.

Then it hit , I had underestimated him once again. He was more than the spoiled nace everyone thought he was. He was a man who took a company at the brink of collapse and turned it into sothing capable of competing against Volkov Apex Holdings

*******

Our business trip ended after another hospital visit. My results would be sent to later after which new steps would be taken.

Until then we have to wait. I arrived at the airport in the evening. The sky had an amber glow when the jet arrived at the terminal. From the sky, I didn’t have the feeling of longing I felt in the past seeing the city which had been my ho for years.

We had flown over in Lucien’s private jet. At this point, I wasn’t surprised at whatever he showed anymore.

A car was already waiting at the gate for us, and they headed first for my destination, Raphael’s house. That was all that building ant to now.

We arrived at the gate at the sa ti and ran into Raphael, who was just returning from sowhere. It was already dark now around 7 pm.

Our car was parked before Raphael’s car, although we both stepped out at the sa ti. Lucien stepped out of the car and shot Raphael a provocative gaze which got into Raphael

He stood at his car’s open door montarily, forgetting Alia who was still inside the car. Their gaze locked for a mont before Lucien helped out of the car. He placed a soft peck on my cheeks.

"See you later Viper." He chid before adding in a low whisper deliberately leaning down to make his actions look intimate

"Make sure not to forget ." His tone sounded deliberately seductive. I smiled then played along, pecking lightly on the lips, which Lucien didn’t see coming.

"The trip was fun. Thank you for taking along." I deliberately raised my voice for Raphael to hear..Lucien chuckled and a mischievous light shone in his eyes.

"Looks like you grew out your fangs, Viper." He snickered.

We parted ways. I watched Lucien’s ride drive away before heading inside. I didn’t even bother to spare Raphael a glance but I knew his gaze lingered behind until I left his line of sight.

The butler got soone to handle my luggage. I settled down in my room. "Welco back madam." The butler unexpectedly said before leaving the room. I thought they completely stopped regarding my presence.

I sat at the edge of my bed. There were so many thoughts going through my mind all at once.

The trip had ended but it changed my worldview completely
