Chapter 43: Chapter 43

Adam kept walking after that.

The memory had given him something valuable. He had the name, the face, and the place now. He knew where Eshan Verma had been buried, and he knew who had pulled the trigger.

But Adam did not let that push him into another careless move.

What happened with Bruno and Kenji had been enough. He had treated one exposed line like a safe path, then walked too close to it himself.

He was not going to repeat that mistake with a police officer.

Rovan Hale was not Bruno. A thug could be pushed with greed or fear in simple ways. A policeman understood procedure, pressure, and what to do when a threat appeared from nowhere. If Adam went to him too early and said, I know what you did, then Rovan would not just panic. He would start checking the leak, tracing the danger, and hunting for the hand behind it.

Adam already had enough enemies. He did not need a trained one added to the list because of impatience.

’I need proof first,’ Adam thought. ’Then I can touch him.’

That thought settled him.

He raised his hand and pasted the copied phone back into it. The device appeared exactly as before, with the same scratches on the side and the same screen.

Adam looked at it once, then called Bruno.

The line connected quickly.

"Mister Wil," Bruno said at once.

Adam heard the difference in his voice immediately. The fear was still there, but now it was mixed with relief. Bruno had already done the ugly work Gonda gave him, and whatever he had seen there had shaken him, yet he still sounded grateful.

"So," Adam said, "how did your promotion go?"

Bruno let out a short breath.

"Before anything, I need to thank you. Because of you, my life was saved."

Adam said nothing and let him continue.

"Boss told me to return the sixteen million dollars to you," Bruno said. "If you want, I can move that money into your company directly."

That told Adam enough.

Bruno had stopped trying to be clever with the money for now. Fear had beaten that habit out of him, at least for the moment. As long as Wil kept using him, Bruno would keep obeying. In his mind, the road ahead was already set: he had survived first, Gonda had to die next, and after that he wanted the seat above him.

"We’ll deal with the money later," Adam said. "Right now I have work for you."

Bruno answered immediately.

"I’m listening."

"I have two jobs for you."

That made Bruno even sharper.

"Tell me."

Adam started with the longer one.

"I’m sending you ten company names. I want full details on them. I want to know where their imported goods come from, which routes their shipments use, what exactly they bring from outside, who signs off on purchases, and who actually makes the final decision inside the company. I also want the weakness of that man. Not street talk. Something real that can be used. And find the weak point inside the company too."

Bruno did not hesitate.

"That can be done," he said. "The moment I have something solid, I’ll contact you."

Adam moved to the second task.

"This one is immediate."

Bruno sounded more eager now instead of more careful.

"Say it."

Adam gave him the forest name.

"Go to Blackroot Forest," he said. "There’s a stretch inside it near an old dry streambed. You’ll find disturbed ground there. A body is buried under it."

For the first time, Bruno went quiet.

He had expected cargo, people, or money. Not this.

Adam kept speaking before that silence turned into a question.

"The body was killed by a bullet. I want the body, the bullet if it can still be found, and anything around the site that points to the shooter. Cloth, metal, casing pieces, buried objects, anything. Don’t clean anything or mix the pieces together. Keep each piece separate. Preserve the body somewhere cold and hidden, and keep the rest sealed until my next order."

Bruno inhaled slowly, then said, "Understood."

Adam listened to his tone. The surprise was still there, but obedience had already pushed past it.

"I want confirmation as soon as the site is opened," Adam said. "Not later. The moment you know it is there."

"I’ll go myself," Bruno said. "I’ll handle it."

Adam lowered his voice.

"Remember this clearly. This work is being given to you by our organization directly, not through Gonda. Do you understand what that means?"

Bruno answered at once.

"I understand."

Adam believed him.

That line had done enough. Bruno would now treat this as something above gang work, and that was exactly what Adam wanted. The less Bruno mixed this with Gonda in his head, the better.

"Good," Adam said.

Then he ended the call.

He stood still for a few seconds after that, the phone still in his hand.

The hardest part had not been giving the order. The hardest part had been choosing not to move on Rovan directly. Adam wanted to. He wanted to put pressure on the man now, before even one more day passed. But wanting something and reaching too fast were not the same thing.

He had already learned that.

What he needed from Rovan was not one frightened confession but a line strong enough to pull the rest of the truth behind it, which meant the body, the bullet, and the hidden proof all mattered.

Once those things were in his hand, Rovan Hale would stop being a man in uniform and become what he really was, a weak link.

Adam looked down at the copied phone.

He could have kept it. If he needed another quick call, he could use it again, and if he wanted another device later, he could simply copy one. That part was no longer difficult for him.

But keeping the same phone longer than necessary had no value.

So he broke it.

He smashed the screen first, bent the frame until it cracked, tore out the battery, and threw the pieces apart as he walked.

By the time he reached the next crossing, nothing was left together.

Adam did not stop. The street was still busy around him, and no one knew that a buried body in Blackroot Forest was about to surface.

This time, when he went after Rovan Hale, he would not go empty-handed.
