If we don’t work fast, the number of patients will pile up in no ti. Right now, the queue was manageable, and the wounded didn’t have to wait for long to get dical attention. However, if we slowed down now or if more soldiers arrived, things would head for the worst.

Unfortunately, I was reminded of that fateful day when my village was attacked, and I had to work just like this. I closed my eyes and shook the thought away from my mind. Unlike then, we had more advance tools here and we had enough dicine. I had to be content with that for now. The rest was up to us.

The sa couldn’t be said for the other side of battle. The soldiers from my town probably didn’t have enough of anything to heal their injuries. The next patient arrived, and I banished all thoughts to focus on the work at hand.

The sun had started to set when the ssenger from the front line arrived bearing news that the fighting had ended for the day. Everyone, including myself, let out a huge sigh of relief. The first day was hectic but it was manageable. We were able to take turns at our lunch break and we didn’t have to rush through our cases.

“Well done, everyone. We did very well for our first day here. Hopefully, tomorrow will be better for us. Today, we managed to save the lives of every single patient that were brought here. Thank you everyone for helping to make this miracle happen. Let’s quickly wrap up and head back to rest. Tomorrow, we start at the sa ti early in the morning,” Doctor Kai quickly wrapped up the day.

Wow. No patients died today. I closed my eyes and almost cried from relief. I knew that many must have passed away at the frontline where the fighting was, but it was great that we could save everyone that was injured and brought here.

“Good work, My Lady. You are very skilled. Frankly, I’m quite amazed that...you know...a woman can do so much...” General Chang said as he ca to my side.

I was tidying away from dical tools, so I just smiled at him. If only many other people would think like him then perhaps won will be allowed to practice dicine in the empire.

“Unlike the empire, in my town it isn’t uncommon for woman to practice dicine and beco doctors,” I replied.

“Is that so? Well, I guess having a woman tend to your wounds might feel better than being touched by a man...” General Chang said teasingly before he laughed loudly at his own joke.

As promised, General Chang escorted back to Ren’s tent right before nightfall. I thanked him for his help and asked where he would go off to.

“My real work starts now, My Lady. After the fighting is over, it’s ti to strategize and plan our move for tomorrow. I have a eting to go to now so please excuse ,” General Chang said.

“Of course. Thank you so much for today,” I thanked him with a bright smile.

“Rest well, My Lady. Do not leave the tent. Just stay in there and wait for the crown prince,” General Chang reminded one more ti.

“Ok...” I said to reassure him.

...

A few hours later, Ren finally arrived back at his tent. I ran up to him imdiately as relief flooded my body. Ren, he seems perfectly healthy and fine. Thank the heavens!

“Ren...you’re finally back,” I said before smiling weakly at him.

“How was your first day working?” Ren asked as he patted my head gently.

“It was fine. We did well...none of our patients died. We managed to save them all,” I reported proudly.

“Wow. That’s quite an achievent,” Ren said as he sat down and patted his lap.

I felt heat rise to my cheeks as I blushed a little at his sudden invitation. Slowly, I walked over to him and sat on his lap. His arms imdiately circled my body and held to him.

“Have you eaten?” I asked shyly.

“Yes, I have. Sorry the eting took a long while...” Ren said before kissing my hair softly.

“Thank you for sending General Chang to help . He seems like a very nice...and funny person,” I said, trying to keep the mood light.

“He volunteered to babysit you, actually. He was curious to see the woman who wanted to join the war march. Be respectful to him, he’s a very senior general who worked alongside the emperor before too,” Ren said a little sternly.

“Of course!” I said quickly.

“Good girl,” Ren said as he hugged a little tighter to him.

We stayed that way for a while as we silently enjoyed each other’s company. It was good to be back here with Ren after a long and tiring day. It had just been one day, and I felt very tired already. Most of the fatigue was in my mind. Dealing with uncertainty in the face of death was very draining.

“Ren, how long do you think this war will go on for?” I asked softly as I looked up into his face.

“A week or two...hopefully...” Ren replied.

That long?!

I didn’t know what I was expecting but I was hoping for sothing along the lines of a few days and not up to two weeks.

“I’m glad that I ca along...” I muttered underneath my breath.

“What was that?” Ren asked.

“If I didn’t co along, you would have been away for weeks...” I whined.

“I guess you’re right...” Ren said before laughing a little at .

I could tell that he was pleased. Throwing my arms around him, I buried my face into his hard chest. Coming here was undoubtedly the right decision. It was many tis better than rotting away back at the palace as I worry endlessly about Ren and how he was doing with little access to news about him.

“Let’s go to bed,” I said before I placed a soft kiss on his cheek.

“Is that an invitation?” Ren teased.

“Umm...yes...” I replied a little shyly.

Ren kissed deeply before he stood up and carried in his arms to the bed. I wasn’t sure how many nights we could keep this wild lovemaking up between us but for now all I wanted was to be one with Ren.
