Is it because her confession disgusted Ye Cheng, and that’s why he’s avoiding her, refusing to see her?
There were mosquitoes in the dark bushes downstairs. Xia Duoduo was wearing a pair of shorts, and her fair legs were already covered in several bites. She deeply regretted not bringing a bottle of mosquito repellent.
While pressing the call button and holding the phone between her shoulder and ear, Xia Duoduo bent down to scratch at her bitten legs: "Little Wei, are you looking for ?"
"Duoduo, where are you right now?"
"Downstairs at the Great Demon King’s place, waiting for him to co back."
Ji Wei had pretty much guessed where Xia Duoduo was, so she wasn’t surprised by her answer. But thinking about how attentively Ye Cheng had been caring for Zii tonight, Ji Wei couldn’t help but feel a pang of sadness for her close friend.
No matter how deeply Duoduo loved Ye Cheng, it was probably impossible for him to respond to her feelings anymore, right?
After a few monts of silence, Ji Wei spoke solemnly: "Duoduo, actually, tonight... I saw Ye Cheng."
"You saw him? Where?!" Xia Duoduo imdiately straightened up, clutching her phone nervously, a glimr of hope flashing in her eyes.
"He was with Zii." Although it was cruel, Ji Wei decided to tell her the truth: "They’ve reconciled, and they seem to be getting along well."
"..."
There was no sound from Xia Duoduo on the other end of the line.
Ji Wei’s heart tightened, but she pushed through the ache and continued, "Zii has lost her eyesight. At dinner tonight, Ye Cheng was ticulously taking care of her the whole ti. I think he must really love her. If I’m not mistaken, the two months Ye Cheng disappeared were likely spent searching for Zii."
Xia Duoduo bit down hard on her lip, forcing back the tears that were about to spill. After a long pause, her voice trembled as she replied, "I understand."
"Duoduo, you might feel heartbroken and in pain right now, but it’s all temporary... Go ho, take a nice hot shower, and get so rest. Ti is the best healer, and the pain you’re feeling now will pass."
Ji Wei restrained her own sadness and calmly urged her.
She knew all too well how hard it was to forget soone you loved so deeply.
But many loves in this world are like this—loving but never obtaining. You love him, but he loves soone else.
From the other end of the call ca the faint, suppressed sound of sobbing.
Ji Wei’s eyes brimd with tears as well.
She didn’t know how to comfort Duoduo. But no matter how cruel reality was, they had to learn to accept it, to face it.
"Duoduo, don’t cry... Tell your address, and I’ll co get you. Let stay with you tonight, okay?" Ji Wei offered, her heart aching with worry.
Xia Duoduo’s quiet weeping didn’t stop.
"Don’t cry now, you silly girl. Just tell where you are."
"No need." After a long pause, Xia Duoduo’s hoarse and weary voice finally ca through, "I’ll go ho safely, don’t worry about . Just now, so sand blew into my eyes—so annoying! It made tear up... Little Wei, there are way too many mosquitoes here. I’m heading back to the car now, got to hang up."
"Duoduo! Drive safely," Ji Wei quickly reminded her.
"Mhm, mhm."
Beep, beep, beep...
The call was disconnected.
Ji Wei stared at the still-lit screen of her phone, a sudden wave of lancholy washing over her.
She stood there, unmoving.
Suddenly, a weight fell on her shoulder. A man’s long fingers rested there, his deep voice sounding beside her: "Why are you standing here? Aren’t you going inside?"
Ji Wei turned her head and, through misty, tear-filled eyes, silently looked at Gu Moqian.
"What happened?"
Gu Moqian noticed her reddened eyes and imdiately asked with concern.
