Gavin:

It was quite bright when I woke up. The ground beneath felt fresh, but a little wet. As I tried to grab onto what I was lying on, I realized it was probably just grass. I opened my eyes and stared at the beautiful open sky, clouds hanging above . I closed my eyes again, thinking I could sleep for a few more minutes, but then realization struck, and I jolted upright.

I looked around and realized I was in a garden. A park. There were benches, swings, and slides, and there I was, with a basket full of fruits placed next to . I didn’t understand why I had woken up in a garden. Then my eyes landed on a swing far away. I got up and walked steadily toward it, noticing soone sitting there. The entire place was empty except for us.

I rembered when Helanie told us about the room’s world nightmare. There were people there, she had said, but this place was completely different. As I approached the swing, her face slowly ca into view. It was Lucy, my fated mate, the one I had once cheated on.

My steps slowed, then stopped. She was swinging gently, staring into the distance. She looked beautiful, as always. Her cute little dimple appeared when she smiled at the view of the mountains ahead, and it made my heart skip a beat. The wolf part of vanished and there was no fated connection in that mont, just , and just her.

"Lucy," I whispered. She slowly lowered her feet and stopped the swing. Then she raised her eyes to watch approach. The little smile that had ford on her face was gone. There were so many complaints in her eyes that I felt a surge of anger toward myself.

I walked to her and sat on the empty swing beside her. She stared at for a mont before looking away.

"What are you doing here?" she asked.

"I ca after you," I said. She smiled, but it was almost sarcastic.

"What made you think I’d co with you?" she asked, her voice low and soft, not the fake Lucy the entity had been entertaining.

"I’m so sorry. I’ve let you down," I said. No matter how many tis I apologized, it had never been enough.

Now that I was here with her, and it was just the two of us, all the mories rushed back. The tis we spent together. We had been the best of friends. Then I had a crush on her. I proposed, and later we discovered we were fated mates. And then I cheated on her. One night, stressed and drunk, I broke her heart, and instead of telling her the truth, I made her feel guilty for suspecting sothing was wrong. I put her in the sa room as Jenny so many tis before she finally found out.

I had been the villain of her story, a monster, maybe The Rune, whether she admitted it or not, whether anyone else admitted it or not. It was the truth. Lucy’s life had been affected because of .

"We were not only mates, we were best friends too." As soon as I said that, her head snapped toward , and she frowned.

"What are you talking about, stranger?"

I realized she was constantly losing her mory. If I didn’t act quickly, she would completely forget everything and just be happy in this dream world where nothing could harm her.

I watched her get up and leave, wandering around. I began to realize that she was in charge of this place, and it would take so ti to make her rember that she was stuck in her body and needed to co out. However, I had no clue how to go about it. I had learned things from Helen about the runes world, and I began to think about how they had defeated the world, how they made soone leave the dream world and accept reality.

So I approached Lucy again.

"Why are you still following ?" she asked, grunting.

"Um, listen, I think you still love ."

As soon as I said that, she stopped and snapped her head toward . I froze too, raising my hands to show I was surrendering. I rembered what the entity had told . She said Lucy wanted to kill , so I needed to be careful.

"You have the nerve," she comnted, but the small crack in her voice made feel like it was true. Of course it was. For her, it was still the sa day she found out I cheated on her. She was stuck in that mont, never able to move on.

"Lucy, I don’t know how to say this," I said, looking around anxiously.

"What? You’re not saying anything. I don’t love you. Nobody will love you. You’re a fucking cheater," she scread. I noticed her eyes turning red, and soon she started to tear up, but her tears were blood. That crushed even more.

In front of was the girl I had loved so much. How did I hurt her like this?

At that mont, I could not help but do what I needed to do. While she was crying, I rushed toward her, cupped her face in my hands, and pressed our lips together.

The taste of her lips reminded of old tis, the freshness and the comfort I used to feel with her. I used to be so funny, so mischievous when I was with her. We were two crackheads. People used to say we were both insane and that our babies would be completely mad. As I thought about all that, I felt our tears start to mix. She gently pushed and broke the kiss.

In that brief mont, I noticed her just staring at , almost as if she was trying hard to rember sothing. Then I saw her dimples start to form, like she was about to smile. But her smile was short-lived. My betrayal had probably hurt her so much that she frowned, looking angry with . I felt like I could not reach the part of her that was hurting.
