Helanie:
That night, after eating and walking around, we decided to head to Emt’s office on one of the top floors to discuss things, especially about the pearl around my neck. Because Emt had been staring at it for too long. I wanted to know more about it, and also figure out how to deal with the entity from the tenth floor.
Once we settled and the others started drinking, I held a fresh orange juice in my hand. "You guys can look around for anything you can find in the books," Emt told my friends, letting them know they had the permission to search the shelves for ways to help Lucy. At the sa ti, he also shared his plan.
"I want to first see what is the deal with the pearl," he said, pointing at my neck.
"Yeah, you’ve been staring at it for way too long," Kaye reminded him. "Is there anything specific you want to tell us?" Kaye asked.
"Yeah. If I’m not wrong, this pearl can open doors to other realms." As soon as he said that, we all looked around at each other in confusion.
"What does that an?" I asked Emt.
"I don’t know. I just know that a pearl from a rmaid’s tail is very sacred and also magical," he mumbled, bringing a smile to my face.
No wonder my mom gave it to . She called special.
"Oh wait, I rember! For you to escape the curse when all the curses are breaking down and the poison is gathering around us, you need to escape to another realm to survive," Maximus said, pointing at Emt and jumping up and down happily. As soon as Emt nodded his head, my eyes widened.
"Wait, does that an you have a chance?" I uttered, my voice broke.
It had been weighing on heavily, thinking about what we would do for Emt. Earlier that day, he had explained that once the curses broke, he would die. To survive, he needed to go to another realm to escape the poison of the curses. When the brothers’ curses lifted, their lingering poison would be too toxic for him, and it would all attack him at once. If he were in another realm, though, by the ti the curses and their poison disappeared, he would survive.
"Then how about we first look into this pearl," I asked, touching it. I knew Lucy needed to be rescued, but at the sa ti, we were going to trap her. That was the first step to saving her. She would be fine. But Emt, we didn’t know when the curses would beco extre or when we would finally have to save the brothers by whatever ans. We needed to find a way for Emt to survive. Then we could do the rest, fight the X-Codex, free Lucy from the Entity’s grasp, with a clearer mind.
"Yeah, Helanie is right," Norman said, smiling at his brother. They were already ready to give him a hug, because what he had told us was enough for us to know there was a way for Emt to survive.
"Then let’s get to work," Sage said, rubbing her palms.
However, I noticed that whenever she got too excited for Emt, Penn would look at her. I guessed it would take ti for her to make Penn realize she only adored Emt, but loved Penn.
We got to work. We went through every book. And every ti I looked at Emt smiling to himself, I felt relieved.
Then he approached with a book. "See, it says a lot about rmaids," he said, pointing at it, though I could tell he just wanted to get closer.
"You can hold the pearl if you want," I said, and he laughed.
"No, no, no, that’s not it. I just wanted to let you know that I cannot wait to be a part of your and my child’s life," he whispered, making understand why it had been so hard to cope with the idea he wouldn’t be with us.
"Emt, you will be there in our baby’s life. I will not let anything happen to you," I said to him.
He smiled even wider. This was the first ti I had seen Emt smile so crazily wide. And honestly, it made feel so relieved.
"I found a book—a book of pearls," Sage announced, raising her hand so high with the book that we all started laughing at her. But we were happy. We were making progress.
We all put the book on the table and then stood around it in a circle. Sage, Jenny, Gavin, and Lamar had stools behind us, standing on top so they could look down. Their hands rested on each other’s shoulders, and I knew if one of them fell, the others would co crashing down.
Norman looked up and pointed at Lamar, then tapped his shoulder, letting him know he could hunch down with his support. With an uneasy look and a bit shy, Lamar placed his hands on his professor’s shoulders, and the others followed. Sage only put her hands on Penn’s shoulder this ti, letting Gavin use Emt’s shoulder for support, and I could already tell it gave Penn a lot of hope. Little things in a relationship mattered, but right then, we just wanted to focus on the book.
Emt opened it excitedly, shuffling through the pages until he ca across the rmaid pearl, just like the one on my neck. Then he smiled, looking at all of us. We looked like overly excited kids high on sugar, smiling ear to ear, staring at the book, then at Emt. But as his smile started to fade, so did ours.
"I don’t think this book can help us," Emt muttered, and I mirrored the expression of everyone else because we were all scared of what he had just found out.
"Emt, what is it?" Maximus asked, staring at his brother’s face with tears already forming in his eyes.
We had been so excited just a few minutes ago, thinking there was a way to save Emt from the disastrous poison of the curses.
