Nick’s POV
The phone landed face-up on the floor, the screen lighting up just as I bent down to pick it up.
And then I froze.
Well... hello there.
Was that— my ass?
I blinked once. Then twice. Yep, definitely my ass. Naked. Gloriously so.
Behind , Georgia’s voice squeaked, "No, no, don’t—!"
Too late. I straightened up, holding her phone out of her reach as she tried to grab it back, her face already pinker than the hospital gown she was wearing. I couldn’t help the slow grin that tugged at my lips.
"Wow," I drawled, turning the phone a little to the side to get a better look. "I don’t really look at my ass, but damn—I have a good one."
Her eyes widened in horror. "Nick! Give it to !"
Instead of obeying, I casually scrolled up. Her gasp was almost louder than my laugh.
"My dear wife," I said, unable to resist teasing her further, "I didn’t know you were keeping these kinds of pictures of . I should start taking so of you too, don’t you think? It’s unfair that you’re the only one keeping lewd naked pictures of my body."
"Nick!"
Her voice was half-murder, half-embarrassnt, and entirely adorable. I finally turned around, smirk firmly in place, and handed her the phone back.
"Here," I said smoothly. "Make sure Katie doesn’t play on your phone, yeah?"
She snatched it from my hand and glared daggers at , her cheeks still bright red.
"Surprise . If you really are my husband, then you should know what I like to eat."
Now, that’s a challenge. She’s been eating a lot lately, so I don’t know anymore which one is her favorite.
I chuckled, leaning one hand on the bed’s railing. "Alright, I’ll buy your favorite then."
She turned her back on , pretending to ignore —but I couldn’t resist one more jab. I leaned in close, my lips brushing just near her ear, enough for her to feel the warmth of my breath.
"If you ever want to add more fresh naked pictures or videos of to your collection," I whispered, my voice low and teasing, "don’t hesitate to ask. I’ll gladly pose for you. Hell, you can even paint nude for hours if you’d like."
Before she could react, I pressed a quick kiss to her cheek. I didn’t think about whether she’ll get mad or not since she can’t rember , but I was just craving to kiss her, to touch her. So I just did it without hesitation; it doesn’t matter if she slaps , I’ll just apologize later if she does.
Ever since we found her, I haven’t touched her, not even the tip of her finger, even when she was sleeping. I was afraid that if I did it, she might get scared of and that she might avoid , and hell, what if she also divorced ?
I don’t know what to do if that happens. But right now, none of it mattered. I just want to be close to her, to feel the connection between us once again.
"You!" she yelped, spinning around—but I was already halfway to the door, grinning over my shoulder as I waved.
"Don’t wait up, sweetheart," I said, still laughing as I stepped out.
And behind , her muffled groan echoed through the room—followed by the sound of a pillow hitting the wall.
God, she was cute when she was flustered.
I felt surprisingly refreshed after that nap. I woke up once or twice, but when I saw Georgia and Ella giggling softly to each other, whispering like schoolgirls trying not to get caught, I decided to let them be.
Seeing her smile—even if she couldn’t rember —was enough reason to stay still and just breathe. I needed to regain my strength anyway. If I was going to take care of her properly, I had to be at my best.
I pulled my phone from my pocket, which I’d put on silent earlier as I walked towards the elevator. The world could wait—for once, I wanted it to.
The mont I unlocked it, the screen flooded with notifications. Hundreds of ssages, emails, and missed calls. I skimd through them quickly and ignored most, stopping only when I saw the nas that mattered: Oliver and Evelyn.
I tapped Oliver’s missed call first and rang him back as I stepped into the elevator.
"Georgia’s awake," I said as soon as the greetings were done. "But... she can’t rember anything."
There was a brief pause on the other end before Oliver’s calm, steady voice ca through.
[Vicky and Liam already updated ,] he said. [But the reason I called earlier was about Reagan. He’s going to be charged with perjury soon. It’s only a matter of ti before the prosecutor files the case. And you know how the state’s attorney is with that kind of offense—they don’t take it lightly unless we intervene. So... what do you want to do?]
I exhaled, the elevator doors closing with a soft ding. "What are my options?"
[Two,] he said. [I can talk to the prosecution team and convince them to lower his sentence... or I can do the opposite—push for a harsher penalty. Either way, I’ll back you. Even if Benjamin throws a fit about it.]
That made smile. Typical Oliver. Always steady, always loyal. My ride-or-die since day one.
"What do you suggest, as my lawyer?" I asked, letting a teasing tone creep into my voice.
He laughed. [Do you really need to ask? You know damn well which side I’m on. As your lawyer and your best friend, I’ll always protect you.]
I chuckled, shaking my head. "That’s why you’re still stuck with after all these years."
[And proud of it,] he said with a grin I could practically hear through the phone.
"I’ll think about it," I said.
[Alright, but don’t take too long. I’ll go there tomorrow for Georgia’s case. Send a chopper, I’m a busy man,] Oliver joked.
I laughed and said, "Alright, I’ll tell Vicky about it. See you tomorrow."
I pocketed my phone when the elevator doors slid open again. As I walked toward the lobby of the hospital, I couldn’t help but think how strange life was—one mont I was fighting for my na in court, the next, I was praying that the woman I loved would rember the life we built together.
Justice could wait a few more hours. Right now, all I wanted... was to get our life back, and I already have a few ideas in mind to help her rember it.
