Ruby Sullivan tugged at Ethan Sterling’s arm, tilted her head to look at him, and said with an innocent face, "Could this be Gwen Yates’s father?"
She was obviously asking a question she already knew the answer to.
After Ethan inford her about the dinner party at noon, she did a little investigation into the people attending that night. She didn’t know much about the situation, but she rembered faces and nas very clearly.
Ethan glanced at her, didn’t say a word, but he could tell Ruby’s eyes, squinting with laughter, weren’t filled with good intentions.
Then she tiptoed slightly to whisper to Ethan, "It’s my first ti eting a tycoon, turns out they’re really uncultured. No wonder Gwen would spend money to falsely accuse just to be a third party." But her whisper wasn’t nearly low enough; although the room was quite large, everyone present heard it loud and clear.
"You’re talking nonsense!" gan Vaughn couldn’t tolerate her daughter being slandered, and imdiately slamd the table. Yet, having grown up with strict family education, although impulsive, she didn’t dare rush over and do anything.
When gan Vaughn got married, people behind her back said she married for the Yates Family’s money. The Yates were notoriously wealthy, and she was afraid of being talked about this way. She couldn’t bear Ruby Sullivan exposing her like this.
Ruby was so scared she hid behind Ethan, trembling as she asked, "Oh dear, did they all hear?"
"Mmm, so people don’t like to hear the truth." Ethan indulgently patted her hand and led her to sit next to Aidan Sinclair, completely ignoring Gideon Yates’s murderous glare.
Ruby glanced at the eyes fixed on her. The Yates Family mbers were furious, while the Aldrin Family seed to be enjoying the show. As for Mr. Sinclair himself, his features were all scrunched up, seemingly holding back laughter with all his might.
Aidan swallowed his laughter and tried to smooth things over, "Alright, alright, I’m hosting today to turn swords into ploughshares. Let’s all say a little less, say a little less."
Ruby blinked innocently at Aidan, "Sinclair, I haven’t even ntioned how Uncle Yates sent his own brother to jail over the family inheritance, and I’m already saying too little."
"You!" Gideon Yates finally couldn’t sit still, "Say one more word, and I’ll tear your mouth apart!"
"Go ahead and try." Ethan said lightly, not even looking at him.
"Tsk tsk, still indulging in the arrogance of wealth, we civilized people abide by the law, no wonder soone’s kids can ignore the law, take what’s limitless as fun, turns out it’s ancestral ignorance." Ruby sarcastically picked at her food, with an expression that wouldn’t rest until she angered Gideon Yates to death.
Aidan Sinclair figured it out. The Sterling Family couple wasn’t here to settle matters at all. Luckily, he’s also soone who isn’t afraid of trouble, and today he was entrusted by the elder to stand up for his future brother-in-law. Since they wanted to stir up trouble, he had to act the part of the big brother.
Isn’t the big brother supposed to clean up the ss? He found this quite interesting.
Gideon Yates’s face turned green with anger. He stood up, "Mr. Sinclair, I don’t see any sincerity in their apologies. We have other matters to attend to, we’ll be leaving first."
"Then I won’t see you out." Aidan replied with a chuckle, thinking to himself, you were the ones who went out of your way to create relationships and insisted on joining this event, weren’t you?
The Yates Family’s main goal today was to forge ties with the Aldrin Family. Had they known earlier that the sole heir of the Aldrin Family was pursuing their daughter, they wouldn’t have let Gwen get close to Ethan. Now it seed that staying any longer would only embarrass them further in front of the Aldrin Family, so they could only leave first.
Aidan Sinclair ignored the Yates Family and curiously asked, "So, have you found evidence to prosecute Julian Lowe?"
"Yes." Ethan responded. He had been on a business trip, which caused the delay. If it had been resolved earlier, perhaps Ruby wouldn’t have been frightened. Thinking of this, he felt a surge of guilt toward his wife for not handling things well.
Aidan Sinclair laughed, "Speaking of which, Julian Lowe is brainless, saying whatever he wants. Did he really think the police are fools?"
"The person behind it is the real fool." Ruby chid in with laughter.
Aidan served her a piece of braised pork, "Try it, I think it falls short compared to yours." Seeing this, he was reminded of innocence.
In fact, he has a subtle fondness for Ruby because in innocence’s diary, she wrote so much good about Ruby. Although he hadn’t had much interaction with Ruby, just her acting dumb today made him find her interesting, her way of speaking was much like his sister’s.
"Thank you, Sinclair."
At this mont, the Yates couple, lingering at the entrance, finally left quietly after they stopped talking about the Julian case.
After they left, Ethan raised his glass to Mr. and Mrs. Aldrin, who hadn’t spoken much, "I apologize for being too harsh on your son."
Roman Aldrin and his wife Linda exchanged a glance, stiffened their faces, raised their glasses, and drank first, "Don’t laugh at us, but we don’t know how to handle that son of ours..."
Mrs. Aldrin, though reluctant to see her son suffer, understood that without so lessons, his life might be ruined.
"Originally, we were happy to hear the girl he liked was well-behaved and a high achiever, thinking maybe he would be influenced. We didn’t expect him to be used to do such brainless things. We saw the videos of what he did with others, it’s us who owe an apology." Mrs. Aldrin spoke about her son, her eyes reddening.
She was a military doctor, always speaking in a slow, thodical manner.
Roman Aldrin sighed too, "Logically, I shouldn’t be pleading for that rascal of ours, but if this matter really goes to court, his life would be over, so..."
"I also just learned yesterday that Elder Aldrin and my Third Uncle are old friends. Given that, we won’t pursue it anymore, but I hope your son will keep his eyes open in the future." Ethan gave them a way out.
He originally had so apprehensions about the Aldrin Family; otherwise, he wouldn’t have imdiately called his Third Uncle after calling Aidan Sinclair. Though he knew the Aldrin Family was known for being honest and clean, Skylar Aldrin is the only heir of the Aldrin Family, absolutely not one to triflingly engage with. Unexpectedly, his unconventional Third Uncle and Elder Aldrin turned out to be friends across generations, having a life-and-death friendship. Knowing all this, Ethan had complete confidence in today’s matters.
So before coming today, he and Ruby had a tacit understanding to embarrass the Yates Family as much as possible.
However, his wife’s superb acting was beyond what he imagined.
In the hospital, Skylar Aldrin enjoyed the bone broth fed by Gwen Yates, feeling elated.
"Brother Skylar, with all the suffering you went through for this ti, I really feel terrible." Gwen pursed her lips and looked at him with guilt.
"You’re my person, how can I watch you suffer any grievances!" Skylar spoke from the heart in his happiness, suddenly feeling anxious as he looked at her. My person and all, she wouldn’t dislike that, would she?
