Claire’s POV

My heart pounded wildly, and I couldn’t tell if it was from anger, nervousness, or sothing else altogether. I couldn’t shake the warmth I had felt when Evander held close; his arms were strong and steady around . He had co to after realizing I was in trouble.

It felt strange seeing him like this. He was always so composed, always dressed in his pristine suits, never once leaving his mansion without that polished armor. But here he was, standing in my small apartnt in casual clothes, looking nothing like the distant, controlled man I had once known.

Why? Why did he care so much? He could have ignored or sent soone else, the way he always had in the past. But instead, he showed up himself, and I couldn’t make sense of it. My heart beat even faster, as if it understood sothing I couldn’t admit to myself.

As I tried to calm down, I felt sothing soft tugging at my hand. I looked down to find Eliam gazing up at with his big eyes filled with tears. My heart tightened at the sight.

I didn’t understand why Evander suddenly had this child in his life. He had never been with Susan, yet here was Eliam, clinging to with a trust and innocence I couldn’t ignore. The little guy’s presence stirred sothing in , sothing that made want to protect him, to give him the kindness he seed to crave.

As I held Eliam’s small hand, I realized that no matter how complicated things were with Evander, I already felt a connection to his son. And deep down, despite everything, I felt sothing pulling toward Evander too.

"Mommy, is Daddy really angry?" Eliam asked, his small voice filled with worry. I pulled him onto my lap, ignoring the dull ache in my own body. As I felt him close, I felt his warmth and the softness of his tiny fra, which made all my pain fade.

"No, baby! Your daddy isn’t angry at all," I assured him, my voice soft as I gently ran my fingers through his hair. I couldn’t believe how much he looked like Evander, as if he were a perfect little copy.

Eliam’s lip trembled as he looked up at . "Then... then Daddy won’t leave , right?"

The look in his eyes tugged at sothing deep within . I didn’t fully understand what he ant, but his fear was clear as day. My heart twisted, and I gently brushed away the tears gathering at the corners of his bright blue eyes.

"Did your father ever leave you alone?" I asked softly, wanting him to feel safe enough to tell .

"Aunt Susan... she said if I ever make him angry... he won’t want to see again," he whispered, his small fingers curling around mine as he trembled.

I felt a surge of anger rise within . How could Evander let a woman like Susan be around this child? How could he allow her to fill Eliam’s head with such cruel, heartless lies?

"Listen to , Eliam," I said, my voice calm but firm as I held his little face in my hands. "Your daddy loves you very much. No one—not Susan, not anyone—can make him stop caring about you. Do you understand?"

He nodded slowly, the worry in his eyes fading just a bit. I hugged him closer, stroking his hair as I promised myself I would protect him from that woman. This sweet, gentle child deserved to feel safe, to feel loved, without anyone tearing him down. And if Evander couldn’t see the harm Susan was causing, then I would be there for Eliam to make sure he never doubted his worth again.

I was still lost in thought when the door clicked open, and Evander walked in. His presence filled the room, a chill running down my spine as his tall fra cast a shadow over .

"Why are you carrying the child?" he asked, reaching forward to take Eliam from my arms. I instinctively slapped his hand away, and he paused, looking down at in confusion.

"You are hurt. You shouldn’t be carrying the little thing," he said said in a low tone.

Thing? How could he call little cutie a thing? I glared up at him, holding Eliam tighter as the boy snuggled closer, pressing his face into my shoulder as if hiding from his father.

"He is not a thing, Evander!" I shot back, my voice sharp as I shielded Eliam with my arms. "He is your son. Look at him—he is terrified, and all you are doing is making him more scared."

Evander’s expression softened, just barely, as his eyes moved to Eliam. "Son, co to your father," he said, his voice softer than I’d ever heard. "Your... mother isn’t feeling well."

The word "mother" hung in the air, and my heart skipped a beat. Hearing him say it, even hesitantly, sent a wave of unexpected warmth through . I couldn’t quite hide the surprise in my eyes, and I saw him notice, though he quickly looked back to Eliam.

"It’s okay, baby! Go to your dad," I murmured softly, but I could see Eliam’s eyes growing heavy. Rather than handing him over, I carefully set him beside on the bed, letting him settle against my side as he drifted off. I glanced up at Evander, eting his surprised gaze.

"Let him sleep here."

"Oh," he replied, a small sound of surprise escaping him. For a mont, I thought I saw a spark in his eyes, but I quickly brushed it off as my imagination. I didn’t want him to get the wrong idea, so I spoke up again, crossing my arms slightly.

"He can stay with tonight; you can co back tomorrow to take him ho," I said, unable to hold back a small, satisfied smile. But just as I thought I’d taken control of the situation, Evander stepped closer his gaze was intense.

Without warning, he leaned in, his face suddenly so close to and...
