Claire’s POV

"But..." Sissy said, her tone still carrying a hint of caution. "If he screws this up, I will be the first to say, ’I told you so.’"

"Deal," I replied with a small laugh as a genuine smile spread across my face. Despite her reservations, I felt deeply grateful for her support— even if it ca with conditions.

Her expression softened for a mont, but then she straightened up, her brows knitting together. "However, Claire," she began firmly, "I still don’t like him. At all."

I nodded, expecting as much, but before I could respond, she continued. "I am not saying this to upset you or make you angry. I just..." She sighed and looked straight in the eyes. "I am saying it because I care about you, Claire. You are the only family I have left, and I am your only well-wisher in this entire ssed-up world."

Her words struck a chord deep within . I smiled warmly and leaned in to hug her tightly. "Thank you," I whispered, my voice thick with emotion.

Sissy hesitated for a mont, then hugged back just as tightly. "You are impossible, you know that?" she muttered, but there was a hint of a smile in her voice.

I pulled back slightly, looking at her with gratitude. "I know you are looking out for , Sissy. And I an it when I say I wouldn’t be where I am today without you."

Her lips quirked into a half-smile, though her eyes remained serious. "Just promise one thing," she said. "No matter what happens, don’t lose yourself trying to fix soone else."

"I promise," I said, my voice steady.

"And if he sses up..."

"I will call you so you can say, ’I told you so,’" I finished for her, making us both laugh.

For the first ti in what felt like forever, I laughed like this.

"By the way," Sissy said, glancing around the room as if trying to lighten the mood. "Can you give the contract? I need to go through it and sign."

"Oh!" I exclaid, realizing I hadn’t handed it over yet. I quickly grabbed my handbag, rummaging through it until I found the docunt and handed it to her. I said softly, "I am sorry for putting you through so much because of ."

Sissy waved her hand dismissively, already skimming the first few pages. "Don’t disturb while I am reading," she muttered, her focus sharp on the papers in front of her. But then she paused and added, "By the way, you should go et that man."

"What man?" I asked, confused.

She looked up briefly, a smirk tugging at the corners of her lips. "The one who strictly warned not to stress you out. He even threatened ! Can you believe that?"

My brows shot up in surprise. "What? He actually said that to you."

"Yep," she replied, her tone almost amused. "But don’t get all defensive on my behalf. I can handle his type." She turned back to the contract, flipping the pages casually.

"How could he treat you like that, though?" I asked. Sissy was my best friend, and she was the one who first made realize my feelings toward him again. And there he was! Threatening her this way.

Sissy shrugged. "Either way, we don’t have ti to sit around. This contract needs to be submitted today, or they will replace you with soone else. And believe , I won’t let that happen after all the drama you have already caused ."

With that, she practically shooed toward the door. "Go on, get out of here. I have got this covered. Let deal with the boring stuff while you handle the storm waiting for you out there."

Her words were firm, but there was a warmth beneath them. I hesitated for a mont, then smiled. "Thanks, Sissy."

"Don’t thank yet," she called out as I walked toward the door. "Just don’t ss things up with him. And also, you need to co with in an hour."

I couldn’t help but laugh softly as I stepped out of the room as I replied to her. "Sure, let get ready first.

Evander’s POV

I sat in the living room, replaying the events of the past few days over and over in my mind. What had I done wrong? I had just told her I would let her go. At the ti, I thought it was the right thing to do. But now I understood how deeply mistaken I had been.

I shouldn’t have taken decisions on her behalf, not without her wish. Claire deserved to be a part of every decision that affected her life. I had acted out of my own insecurities, and in doing so, I had pushed her further away. If I wanted her to stay by my side, I needed to respect her thoughts to show her that her voice mattered.

I decided to go to her and make things right. But just as I was about to leave, the door burst open. Sissy strode in.

"Where is Claire?" She demanded, her tone sharp and unyielding.

I narrowed my eyes at her actions. I knew she was eager to et Claire, but after everything I had done to ruin her mood earlier, the last thing I wanted was for Sissy to make things worse.

"I do not want anyone to disturb her," I said firmly, stepping closer to her. "And that includes you, Sissy."

Her eyebrows shot up in disbelief. "What’s your problem now?" she retorted.

I crossed my arms, eting her glare with one of my own. "If you upset her, you will have to face the consequences. I won’t let anyone—anyone—add to her burdens."

For a mont, Sissy looked like she wanted to argue, but then she let out a scoff, clearly unimpressed by my way of talking. "Fine," she muttered, turning on her heel to leave but stopped as she looked at .
