Chapter 1240: Chapter 393: Maybe I Was Wrong
Kevin Garnett greedily looked around at everything.
The basketball hoop spewing out flas, the fans nearly tearing their throats apart, Wade wearing a hoodie with a serious Yao Ming beside him, and the defending champions warming up opposite.
All of this was just too surreal.
KG looked down at his own hands, still unable to believe that he had really reached the Finals.
Just a year ago, his career had gone through a major setback.
He and the Minnesota Timberwolves had barely beco competitive, advancing deeply in the playoffs, and everyone saw that Timberwolves team as a favorite to win the championship.
But then Sam Cassell’s injury turned all those dreams into aningless fantasies, and even worse, this highly competitive lineup only lasted for one season before the Timberwolves managent wanted to dismantle it, saying they didn’t want to pay too much for Sam Cassell and Latrell Sprewell.
This ant the Timberwolves had absolutely no determination to compete for the championship.
Kevin Garnett was utterly disappointed. He had just tasted the sweetness of victory, and now the team wanted him to go back to wasting away the days in defeat.
Kevin Garnett ultimately decided to leave; he didn’t want to beco a ans for the managent to sell tickets. But the decision to leave subjected him to severe criticism from the fans in Minneapolis.
Fans gathered his jerseys and posters in the square and burned them; his billboards were covered in graffiti overnight.
His family even received death threats. So fans sent a letter filled with razor blades to the Timberwolves, writing: “KG, you’d better not let see you or your family on the street.”
Kevin Garnett felt utterly helpless. He had given everything to the Timberwolves and to the fans here.
But in the end, the team betrayed him, and the fans abandoned him.
Everything beca his fault.
Overnight, he went from being the “Wolf King” to a despised coward.
In this low point, Kevin Garnett ca to the New York Knicks, this graveyard of superstars.
For many years, no superstar could end well in New York’s massive lting pot, not even Michael Jordan.
Even today, so New York fans still refer to Michael Jordan as: “The man who scamd the team for 20 million US dollars and had financial cris with dozens of New York won.”
Though Michael Jordan, even after retiring, claid more than once that he didn’t co to New York for the money, but genuinely wanted to win a championship here, New York fans didn’t believe it one bit.
Kevin Garnett? At first, no one held high hopes for his career in New York. Before the season began, the dia was already anticipating scenes of him, Wade, Yao Ming, and Payton engaging in professional wrestling in the locker room.
Choosing New York seed tantamount to choosing self-destruction. Here, aside from making money, it seed nothing else could be gained.
But just as Kevin Garnett was being completely underestimated, this graveyard t all KG’s fantasies about a perfect team.
He had outstanding teammates, a good team atmosphere. He beca a big star, won the MVP, and everywhere he went felt like a thriving era of Muhammad Ali.
Most importantly, he finally had victories.
A single-season 68 wins, an exhilarating regular season experience that many players never have in their lifeti. And now, the whole world believed he and his team could pursue the ultimate victory.
From ultimate decline to ultimate pinnacle, Kevin Garnett’s year felt like a dream, always filled with an unreal, magical feeling.
So KG was a bit dazed; he knelt down and kissed the Knicks logo at the center of the court.
This place gave him rebirth, and he was destined to leave the championship trophy here.
After standing up, Wade’s fist lightly hit Kevin Garnett’s chest.
The young Flash excitedly shouted: “Ready, KG!? The introduction ceremony is about to begin!”
Kevin Garnett’s thoughts were drawn back to the present by this yell; he noticed the lights around had dimd. Since it was the first ga of the Finals, the New York Knicks decided to have an introduction ceremony for the starting players.
Four giant curtains dropped from the large screen in the center of the stadium, and the cheers reached a crescendo.
“Welco to Madison Square Garden. Next, let us welco the starting lineup of the New York Knicks!
Starting guard, standing 6 feet, 4 inches tall, from Corvallis, Oregon State University, number 20, Gary Payton!
Another guard, standing 6 feet, 4 inches tall, from Milwaukee Marquette University, number 3, Dwyane Lightning Wade!”
The giant screens showed images of Payton and Wade roaring. The atmosphere in the arena was ignited, and the players beca exhilarated by the ceremony.
There’s no boy who hasn’t dread of entering amid a thrilling starting ceremony, a feeling as addictive as sex to a man, regardless of his age or how many tis he’s gone through it, he can’t resist the thrill.
Look at Gary Payton; he was as excited as if he were starting his first NBA ga.
When Shawn Battier was introduced later, the cheers slightly subsided. But as soon as Yao Ming’s na was called, Roger felt like his eardrums were about to burst.
But Yao Ming was not the one to take the stage last. As the leader and MVP of this team, Kevin Garnett had transford from an outsider into New York’s pride and star.
