The apartnt slled of garlic and soy sauce. It was a warm sll. It was a human sll. It did not sll like ozone or blood. Kaito stood in the hallway. He knocked on the door. His hands were clean. The bandages on his arms were hidden under his sleeves. The stitch on his cheek was covered by his hair.

Ryota opened the door. He was wearing an apron. It was pink. It did not match his uniform. He grinned. He stepped aside.

Ryota said: "Welco to the fortress."

Kaito said: "Thanks."

Jin said: "It slls good."

Hana said: "It slls like ho."

They stepped inside. The entryway was filled with shoes. It was cluttered. It was lived in. Kaito took off his shoes. He lined them up neatly. Ryota’s mother appeared from the kitchen. She was wiping her hands on a towel. She looked at the guests. She smiled. It was a warm smile. It reached her eyes.

Ryota’s Mother said: "You must be the friends. Co in. Co in."

Kaito said: "Thank you for having us."

Ryota’s Mother said: "Nonsense. Ryota talks about you all the ti. Mostly you."

She pointed at Kaito. Ryota laughed. He ushered them into the dining room. The table was full. Bowls of rice. Plates of fish. Pickled vegetables. Steam rose from the pots. It was too much food. It was exactly enough.

They sat down. Ryota sat at the head. His father sat to the right. He was reading a newspaper. He looked up. He nodded. He went back to reading. Ryota’s mother served them. She put extra fish on Kaito’s plate.

Ryota’s Mother said: "You look thin. Eat."

Kaito said: "I will."

He picked up his chopsticks. He ate. The food was hot. It tasted like salt and ginger. It tasted like safety. He looked around the table. Hana was talking to Ryota’s mother. She was laughing. She looked relaxed. Jin was eating quietly. He watched the family dynamics. He was analyzing. Kaito just watched.

The conversation flowed. It was about school. It was about work. It was about the weather. It was not about cracks. It was not about entities. It was not about the hunger. Kaito listened. He did not speak much. He did not need to. The noise filled the room. It pushed the silence away.

Ryota said: "Mom. Pass the sauce."

Ryota’s Mother said: "Here. Do not spill it."

Ryota said: "I never spill."

Ryota’s Father said: "You spilled yesterday."

Ryota said: "That was an anomaly."

Hana laughed. She covered her mouth. Her eyes were bright. She looked at Kaito. She caught his eye. She smiled. Kaito nodded. He took another bite of rice. He chewed slowly. He savored the normalcy.

Kuro said: "This is dangerous."

Kaito said: "It is dinner."

Kuro said: "It is attachnt. You are getting comfortable."

Kaito said: "Let ."

Kuro said: "Comfort makes you slow."

Kaito said: "It makes human."

Kuro was silent. The shadow receded into the corner of the room. He did not argue further. He knew the tone. Kaito ignored him. He focused on the sound of Ryota’s voice. It was loud. It was annoying. It was perfect.

Ryota’s Mother looked at Kaito. She studied him. She tilted her head. She put down her chopsticks. She wiped her mouth. She looked kind. She looked curious.

Ryota’s Mother said: "Kaito. You are so quiet."

The table went quiet for a second. Ryota stopped chewing. Jin looked up. Hana paused. Kaito swallowed his food. He put down his chopsticks. He looked at her. He did not feel attacked. He felt seen.

Kaito said: "I am."

Ryota’s Mother said: "Ryota talks enough for ten people. You say nothing. Are you shy."

Ryota said: "He is not shy."

Ryota’s Mother said: "Then what."

Ryota said: "That is how you know he likes you."

The table was silent. Ryota’s mother looked at her son. She looked at Kaito. She waited. Kaito did not speak. He did not deny it. He did not confirm it. He just sat there. He picked up his tea. He drank. He set the cup down.

Ryota said: "See. He is not denying it."

Ryota’s Mother said: "You are terrible."

Ryota said: "I am accurate."

Hana laughed. It was a soft sound. She looked at Kaito. Her eyes were warm. She did not ask him to speak. She did not push him. She accepted the silence. She understood the language.

Ryota’s Mother said: "Well. Eat more. Silence or not, you need energy."

Kaito said: "Yes."

He ate more fish. He ate more rice. He filled the space Ryota’s mother had given him. He did not waste it. He respected the offering. The conversation resud. It flowed around him. He was part of the current. He was not separate. He was not the keeper. He was just a boy at a dinner table.

Kaito thought: This is what I fight for.

Not the city. Not the buildings. The table. The food. The noise. The mother who worried about weight. The friend who made jokes. The girl who understood the silence. This was the core. The battles were the shell. This was the center.

Kuro said: "You are sentintal."

Kaito said: "I am full."

Kuro said: "You are vulnerable."

Kaito said: "I am safe."

Kuro said: "For now."

Kaito ignored him. He finished his rice. He put his chopsticks down. He bowed his head slightly.

Kaito said: "Thank you for the al."

Ryota’s Mother said: "You are welco. Anyti."

Ryota’s Father said: "Co back."

Kaito said: "I will."

They stood up. They helped clear the table. Ryota’s mother refused to let them wash the dishes. She shooed them away. She told them to go study. They went to the living room. They sat on the couch. It was soft. It was worn.

Hana said: "Your family is nice."

Ryota said: "They are loud."

Jin said: "They are good."

Ryota said: "They are embarrassing."

Kaito said: "They are warm."

Ryota looked at him. He smiled. It was not his usual grin. It was smaller. It was genuine. He leaned back. He closed his eyes. He looked tired. Not from fighting. From living.

Ryota said: "Thanks for coming."

Kaito said: "Thanks for inviting."

Ryota said: "Anyti. Seriously. My mom loves you. She thinks you are mysterious."

Kaito said: "I am not."

Ryota said: "You are to her. It is good. She likes mysteries. She hates boring."

Jin said: "You are boring."

Ryota said: "I am exciting. I am chaos."

Hana said: "You are loud."

Ryota said: "Sa thing."

They laughed. Kaito did not laugh. He smiled. It was small. It was real. Hana saw it. She did not say anything. She just smiled back. The mont passed. It was stored. It was kept.

They left an hour later. The night was cold. The air was crisp. They walked to the station. The streets were quiet. The lights were bright. Kaito walked beside Hana. Ryota and Jin walked ahead. They were arguing about a train schedule.

Hana said: "Did you enjoy it."

Kaito said: "Yes."

Hana said: "Good. I was worried."

Kaito said: "About what."

Hana said: "You do not like crowds."

Kaito said: "It was not a crowd."

Hana said: "It was a family."

Kaito said: "It was safe."

Hana said: "You need safe."

Kaito said: "We all do."

Hana looked at him. She stopped walking. The boys were ahead. They did not notice. They kept walking. Hana stood under the streetlight. The light was yellow. It haloed her hair. She looked serious.

Hana said: "Kaito."

Kaito said: "Yes."

Hana said: "You do not have to carry everything."

Kaito said: "I know."

Hana said: "Do you."

Kaito said: "I am trying."

Hana said: "That is enough."

She started walking again. She caught up to Ryota. She joined the argunt. Kaito followed. He walked behind them. He watched their backs. They were solid. They were real. He touched his pocket. The cards were there. They were cold. They were hard.

He thought about the dinner. He thought about the silence. He thought about the defense. Ryota had defended him without knowing the truth. He had defended the silence without knowing the cost. It was ironic. It was perfect.

Kuro said: "They are getting closer."

Kaito said: "They are friends."

Kuro said: "Friends beco targets."

Kaito said: "I will stop it."

Kuro said: "You cannot stop everything."

Kaito said: "I will stop this."

Kuro said: "You are stubborn."

Kaito said: "I am alive."

They reached the station. The trains were running. The platform was busy. People rushed past. They were going ho. They were going to families. They were going to dinners. Kaito was going to the Grey District. He was going to the cracks.

But he had the warmth in his chest. He had the mory of the garlic. He had the mory of the laugh. He had the mory of the defense.

Ryota said: "See you tomorrow."

Jin said: "Sa ti."

Hana said: "Goodnight."

Kaito said: "Goodnight."

They parted. Kaito walked alone. The night was dark. The shadows were long. He touched his cheek. The stitch was hidden. He touched his hair. The white patch was hidden. He touched his pocket. The cards were hidden.

He was ready. The hunger was waiting. The cracks were opening. But he had eaten. He had rested. He had been loved. It was enough fuel for the night.

Kaito kept walking. He did not look back. The shadow followed. The light remained. He was ready.

The day began.
