We fell quiet again. The silence stretched between us until Elon looked up again.

"Is the thing with Naya just a one night stand?" Elon finally asked.

I scoffed. "Why are you being so nosy?"

"Just asking," he said with a frozen smile. "Is she so fling or what? Because a lot of shit’s happening, and if she’s not important—"

"I want her to recover first. That’s what’s important right now before anything else. It’s not like I planned to be intimate with her."

Elon was quiet for a beat. Then: "Well, I’m asking because the girl seems like a hoe."

I paused, going completely still. "That’s a heavy accusation, Elon. Why would you say that?"

Elon shrugged, opening his mouth like he wanted to say sothing, then closing it again.

"Forget it," he shrugged.

"Spill," I said impatiently.

He scratched the back of his head, like he was debating whether or not to say it.

"Well, I don’t know but..." He hesitated. "Earlier, in her room, we kissed."

I stared at him for a full second. "That’s impossible."

"Why would I lie?" he asked, raising his eyebrows. "We kissed and I was actually going to ask her out on a date."

My heart thudded in my chest. "Did she co at you?"

Elon chuckled. "You really think I would purposely kiss a human? I just thought she would be a good lay and stuff. But it’s fine, we can pass her around if you—"

The words were barely out of his mouth when I moved.

One second I was sitting on the bed, the next I had Elon pinned against the wall with my hand around his throat.

My vision had gone red and I could feel my eyes burning, and the Raze rising up inside , it wanted to shift.

"SHE’S NOT AN ITEM TO BE SHARED."

My voice ca out deep and distorted. It was no longer mine but the voice of the beast inside . My Raze was speaking through .

Elon’s eyes went wide. He clawed at my hand, trying to breathe, but I couldn’t let go.

I could hear the way his heart was beating fiercely. My Raze wanted blood. It wanted to tear Elon apart for suggesting such a thing and for touching what was mine.

It took several minutes to wrestle back control. In those few minutes, Elon’s face had slowly turned purple and his struggles got weaker.

It took everything in . I literally clenched my jaw, forcing the Raze down, brathing hard until my vision began to clear.

I finally let go and stumbled backward, breathing hard.

Elon collapsed against the wall, coughing and sputtering. His hand went to his throat, which was already showing dark bruises in the shape of my fingers.

"What the hell is wrong with you?" he choked out between coughs.

"I—" I pressed my hands against my head, trying to think clearly. "I don’t know. I had no idea my Raze would react like that."

"Since when do you start defending a hoe?" Elon’s voice was rough from being choked.

"I didn’t do that," I protested. "My Raze just—it reacted on its own. I couldn’t control it."

Elon finally managed to stand fully, still rubbing his throat. He looked at with sothing disgust. Or maybe pity. I couldn’t tell.

"Don’t get too involved with her," he said flatly. "She’s a hoe, Hansel. I don’t care if your Raze doesn’t like hearing it or not. That’s what she is."

"Elon—"

"I’m serious." He moved toward the door. "You’re going to get yourself killed over so human who’ll spread her legs for anyone. Is that what you want?"

He didn’t wait for an answer. Just opened the door and walked out, leaving standing alone in my room.

I stared at the closed door for a long ti.

My hands were still shaking. The Raze was still right there, just beneath my skin, wanting to chase after Elon. It wanted to make him take back what he’d said about Naya.

"Can you fucking calm down? I growled. "That’s my brother, do you want to kill him."

"He’s lying!" a thick voice reverberated through . "Soone told a lie about our mate and you let him go."

I paused for a second, wondering if I was suddenly hearing things. Was my Raze speaking to ? Was it trying to have a conversation with ?

"Well!" the thick voice ca again. "Don’t tell you believe, Elon. He apparently likes..."

"Wait!" I cut it short. "Did you just speak to ? Can I communicate with you now?"

"Of course, yes!" it said impatiently. "We’ve mated and marked our mate and Veylar, I can access you easily. Go after Elon, he needs to pay for calling our mate nas."

"I am not a murdered, whatever you are," I shot back. "Four people are dead because of your craze last night and you want to kill my own brother?"

"They were jabbing with that nonsense that does nothing but weaken . I couldn’t stand it plus I wanted to be with Naya so bad. It was the full moon, and I have needs."

"Why didn’t you just walk towards her calmly? Did you have to kill people for it?"

There was a long pause and I almost thought it had gone away when its voice ca back stronger than before.

"They attacked first," it said quietly. "I didn’t want those awful things but they won’t stop feeding it to . I’m sorry."

I felt my body weaken. "Sorry, doesn’t fix a lot of things, bud," I said with a long sigh. "I’ve been on a killing spree the entire year."

"We have our Veylar now, she can always control us. I need to rest."

Without waiting for to comnt or anything, it went silent.

I lay back down on my bed, staring at the ceiling again.

Had Naya really kissed Elon?

No. That didn’t make sense. She didn’t look like the kind of person who’d go around kissing people randomly. Plus the bond between us was real. I’d felt it.

But the doubt lingered.

What if Elon was right? What if I was just another conquest to her? What if the bond I felt was one-sided?

Through the muted connection, I tried to feel Naya and tried to sense her emotions or thoughts. But there was nothing. Just that cotton-wrapped emptiness.

She was still unconscious and recovering from what I’d done to her.

Three healers dead, one dead pack mber and two badly injured ones. Naya in the healer’s quarters. Elon with bruises on his throat from where I’d nearly killed him.

Everything I touched turned to destruction.

Maybe my father was right. Maybe I should never have gotten involved with a human.

Maybe I really was cursed to repeat his mistakes.

I lay back on the bed and stared at the ceiling, feeling more alone than I had in years.
