Elder Qiao was stunned and looked at Pei Liyan in astonishnt.
Pei Liyan almost dropped his jaw at Qiao Rui’s words, and his complexion instantly turned awkward.
He was poor?
This woman sure knew how to spin a tale.
Elder Qiao narrowed his eyes, giving a light chuckle, "Liyan, you and Qiao Rui sing praises of each other so well, it’s quite endearing. Grandpa can’t even tell if you two are joking or telling the truth."
Qiao Rui earnestly explained, "Grandpa, five billion, how could that be a joke? It must be the truth."
"Qiao Rui, you’ve just recently returned, having previously lived in the countryside without much exposure to the world, it’s natural you wouldn’t understand the state of the Pei Family," Elder Qiao said pointedly. "If the Pei Family couldn’t co up with five billion, that would be a disgrace in Qingcheng."
"Grandpa, the Pei Family’s wealth is their own, what does that have to do with the Qiao Family?" Qiao Rui spoke confidently. "Besides, Mr. Pei is just working for the Pei Family; their money doesn’t just blow in with the wind to give to anyone who asks."
Elder Qiao’s face grew even uglier, and he tugged at his lip.
Qiao Rui was seriously turning against her own family, indeed she wasn’t raised by their side, she had no conscience.
Elder Qiao was clearly displeased now. "Qiao Rui, you’re quite sothing, now you know to safeguard your husband’s family."
Qiao Rui could hear the sarcasm in her grandfather’s voice, and calmly smiled. "Thank you for the complint, Grandpa. The old ladies in the village always say, ’Marry a chicken, follow the chicken; marry a dog, follow the dog; married to Mr. Pei, naturally I should safeguard Mr. Pei. If I don’t do well, people would laugh at Grandpa for being ignorant.
So, even for the sake of Grandpa’s face, I must properly support Mr. Pei, don’t I?"
The more Pei Liyan listened, the more excited he beca. A glimr of light shone in his deep eyes as he glanced at Qiao Rui without showing his thoughts.
The girl, quiet and honest-looking, brought up points that were quite displeasing yet left Elder Qiao with no room for rebuttal.
Pei Liyan was in deep thought, this girl seed not so simple after all.
Elder Qiao picked up his tea, took a sip, put the cup down, and said, "The Qiao Family has also encountered difficulties this ti, so we thought of asking Liyan for financial support. Grandpa won’t hide it from you—if you don’t succeed this ti, the Qiao Family really might face complete decline."
"So what?" Qiao Rui said naturally. "The Qiao Family’s younger generation are all girls, the only grandson was sent away by Grandpa. Even if you leave behind vast wealth, there’s no one to inherit, so it might as well all co to an end, it’s better than everyone fighting over your inheritance later!"
Elder Qiao’s face turned dark instantly, and without regard for Pei Liyan’s presence, he scolded, "You nonsense creature, are you saying the Qiao Family will have no descendants?"
Qiao Rui shook her head. "No, Grandpa, you’re the one who ntioned no descendants. How could you bla ? Could it be you’re forgetful? Mr. Pei can testify, you just ntioned no descendants, those words were definitely not mine."
Elder Qiao trembled with anger.
A stern look crossed Pei Liyan’s handso face.
Qiao Rui further questioned him, "Mr. Pei, you heard it too, it was my grandpa who said it, wasn’t it?"
Pei Liyan’s smile didn’t reach his eyes as he spoke, "Qiao Rui, don’t you see that Elder Qiao is angry?"
"I’m not blind," said Qiao Rui. "It’s obvious to ."
Pei Liyan glanced at her, feeling increasingly that Qiao Rui was doing this deliberately.
He also clearly understood that the third generation of the Qiao Family indeed consisted of all girls, the only boy being Qiao Rui’s brother, who was given away by Elder Qiao.
Out of disdain for Qiao Rui’s mother, her brother had been given away, leaving her in the countryside.
But after sending away the only third-generation male heir, the Qiao Family truly bore no more boys.
This was Elder Qiao’s sore spot, and Qiao Rui bringing it up so directly was indeed poking right into his wound.
"Don’t make Grandpa angry anymore, let’s go ho," said Pei Liyan as he stood up and addressed Elder Qiao, "Elder Qiao, I will take Qiao Rui ho now, she doesn’t know any better, and it’s not worth your while to argue with her."
Elder Qiao still wanted to discuss the matter of the five billion, but Pei Liyan was clearly avoiding the topic.
He bit his lip and said, "Take care on your way out."
"Take good care of yourself," Pei Liyan nodded slightly and, taking Qiao Rui, they left.
Back in the car, Qiao Rui’s lips curved upwards, clearly very pleased.
Pei Liyan started the car, turning to glance at her, and said, "You pissed off your grandpa and you’re this happy?"
Qiao Rui thought to herself, ’Oh no, I’ve been found out.’
She didn’t want to lie in front of Pei Liyan and pretend she wasn’t pleased, so she nodded and said, "Yes, I’m very happy. Guess you saw right through ."
"Provoking the elder like that, aren’t you afraid he’ll take revenge on you?" Pei Liyan asked again.
Qiao Rui t his gaze and countered, "Mr. Pei, is this your way of showing concern for ?"
Pei Liyan nodded and said, "After all, you did save five billion; it’s only right to be concerned about you."
"Don’t ntion it. You were already very poor, hesitating over five billion, which just goes to show you’re not as flamboyant and successful as people say."
Pei Liyan was taken aback.
Qiao Rui continued, "Those rich folks in the village are just like you, went from rags to riches, showing off for a while, then running out of money and not wanting to admit they’re broke, so they keep putting on airs."
Pei Liyan was now starting to understand how Elder Qiao must feel.
Qiao Rui’s words were enough to infuriate soone to death.
As she spoke, Qiao Rui sighed, "It’s tiring just thinking about them. Mr. Pei, if you’re poor, just be poor; there’s no need to pretend."
Pei Liyan’s expression imdiately darkened as he said in a deep voice, "Qiao Rui, you can shut up now."
Qiao Rui looked at him, nodding her head, "Alright, let’s leave it at that."
"Keep your imagination in check," Pei Liyan frowned deeply, his tone growing stern: "You really think too highly of yourself."
Qiao Rui scratched her head and sighed again, "The nouveau riche in our village are just like you, start lecturing soone in the middle of a conversation."
A muscle twitched in Pei Liyan’s lips, damn it, he was actually being compared to those tacky rich villagers.
"All behaving like they forgot their own surnas after losing money they once had," Qiao Rui added another quip: "Sooner or later, they’ll return to poverty."
Pei Liyan’s eyes grew deep and inscrutable, ignoring Qiao Rui.
Qiao Rui felt she had said enough and enjoyed doing so.
She simply turned to look at the scenery outside the window.
Just then, she happened to see Qiao Xiang at the Qiao Family’s gate.
Qiao Rui said, "My big sister seems like she really wants to see you off, Mr. Pei. Do you want to get out and say goodbye to her?"
"Why should I say goodbye to her?" Pei Liyan retorted, none too pleased.
"Because you look like you’d make a great match with her," Qiao Rui said. "Handso guy, beautiful girl, I love shipping this kind of couple."
"That’s your business," Pei Liyan replied in a deep voice.
"So, are you going to say goodbye to my big sister or what?" Qiao Rui watched him.
The car reached the gate and had to slow down.
And there was Qiao Xiang at the gate, obviously wanting to see soone one more ti; anyway, Qiao Rui didn’t think it was a coincidence.
As expected, Qiao Xiang blocked their car’s path.
Pei Liyan had no choice but to roll down the window.
Qiao Xiang walked over and said in a heavy tone, "Liyan, I need to delay you for five minutes, can you get out of the car for five minutes?"
