"Hah, even if he begs on his knees, you know that I won’t spare him, right?" Alex scoffed. "I don’t know if he’s just desperate or plain stupid. Betraying and hurting you, and then cos back and beg to be spared. It’s so ridiculous."
"Who knows? I never understand what’s on his mind anyway," Eve comnted as she took another cookie.
"Are you not going to persuade to spare him?" Alex asked.
"Why should I spare the effort when you’re not going to listen anyway," Eve replied, but looking at the change of expression on Alex’s face made her realize that he got a bit upset because he thought she’d actually do that. Thus, she added, "And I won’t do it. At best, I just don’t want you to kill him or sothing."
"Well, killing my cousin might be way too dangerous for our family’s reputation, so I won’t do that, obviously," Alex said, his expression eased, but his tone was still firm. "But I still won’t spare him."
Eve wanted to laugh at how easy it was to read Alex’s mind. He was deep-minded and was a talented actor on the big screen, but in real life, Eve realized that Alex couldn’t hide his true thoughts at all.
"Pierre also told that he’s instructed by his father to leak another docunt in a few days. I don’t know which one of the classified docunts he will leak, but this won’t be good," Eve continued. She paused for a mont and lowered her head out of guilt. "I don’t think you should help this ti, Alex. You’ve wasted so much money on . It’s a waste."
"It’s never a waste when it’s for you," Alex denied without hesitation. He said it with so much confidence that it felt like a hard, undeniable truth for him. "I don’t want your life to be in shambles because of him, Roger, or anyone else in this world. You’ve already worked hard enough in the office. So, I will do sothing this ti."
"D-do sothing?" Eve hesitated. "Will you confront Pierre’s dad again?"
"No, confronting him will not result in anything. That man is tough as nails. There’s a reason why Pierre idolized his father so much," Alex said. "My uncle, despite his crookedness, is very assertive of what he wants. He can be greedy, and cruel, but he still gets the job done in the end. Pierre lacks all of those qualities, that’s why he’s looking up to his father."
Eve nodded.
She had been with Pierre for a while to know that was true. She also didn’t understand how Pierre was so wimpy when his father and cousin were so courageous.
Though, she had a small question in mind.
"About your relationship with Pierre and his family... are they really blood-related to you?" Eve asked.
"The Langfords have had many family branches for generations, but the main patriarch is my dad, and he only has one sister—well, had," Alex’s gaze went up as if he was recalling a long-lost face. "Nathasha Langford—Pierre’s mom is my aunt, my dad’s little sister. She passed away when Pierre was only five. Since then, Pierre grew up motherless, but in the end, he is still my cousin."
"I see..." Eve sipped her tea. She recalled one of the rare conversations she had with Pierre. He said that Eve felt like a mother to him because she was cooking him dinner.
Eve thought it was so strange for a grown man to say that to his fiancee, but she didn’t pay much attention then.
Pierre never talked about his mother, but he also rarely talked about his family in general. She only knew that he was Alex’s cousin and Roger Dust’s son.
’The words he said back then started to make sense now,’ Eve thought.
Honestly, despite all of their disagreents and fights, she still wouldn’t wish the worst for Pierre, at least up until he stole all her classified docunts.
Alex observed Eve’s expression and reminded her, "Don’t feel pity for him. He’s still a jobless bum who constantly looks down on others he thinks below him."
’As if you’re any better,’ Eve thought while staring back at him. Eve clearly rembered how Alex looked down at his family mbers like they were insects he could crush anyti. It was bone-chilling for her.
"Then, what are you going to do next?" Eve asked. Before Alex opened his mouth, Eve suddenly interrupted, "—Wait, no matter what you’re going to do next, you need to promise not to harm yourself, alright?"
Alex smiled, "Why do you need to worry about that? Aren’t I just a tool for your revenge?"
"W-well, you are just a tool for . B-but I need to make sure my tool stays sharp, right?" Eve denied it, but Alex didn’t miss how her ears turned red from embarrassnt.
"Sure, this tool is already sharp enough, and is ready to slice soone’s throat," Alex chuckled. "I could ask my father to suppress Roger Dust, but knowing my dad, he would probably propose a contract with to do sothing else in exchange. He has always been callous, and I have been trained to evade any deal with him, knowing it will only put in a difficult position in the end."
Eve really thought that Alex would ask his father to do sothing, so she got curious, "Then, what’s your plan?"
"I’ve always told you that I can crush all of my family mbers if I want to, right? It’s not only about suppressing them with my money and influence," Alex had a deep, malicious smile. "I’ve been investigating and spying on all of their affairs for the past five years, and know what they have been up to. Whether it’s an illicit affair, corruption, bribery, and other things that would ruin their reputations. I keep these secrets close to because I know it’s not hard to blackmail them when necessary."
"So, I’m going to use a dirty thod to fight against my uncle. It’s only fair to fight fire with fire."
