"Why should I be angry at you?" Alex asked in confusion.

"Because I was acting out of line. I know that I should’ve just kept my mouth shut, and let your father have his way to insult ," Eve muttered. "Honestly, I don’t care if he looks down on , but I can’t let him think that we are not ant to be together."

Alex slowed down his car, his eyes were still on the road, but he glanced at Eve for a second and asked again, "You could’ve just told him the truth about us?"

"No, we can’t," Eve gave him a side-glare. "I know what you’ve been thinking, Alex. You set up in that situation, so I can’t say no or tell him the truth about our business deal. You didn’t tell him that we broke up two years ago."

Alex had a thin smile after hearing that. His mood eased a little when he rembered how Eve bravely told his father that they had been dating for seven years straight.

"You’re right. I set you up. Roger Dust never told my dad about your real identity, nor did he tell anyone that you and Pierre were engaged before," Alex admitted. "So I took the opportunity to erase that bastard out of your record as if you’ve never dated him in the first place."

"Though, I didn’t expect you to go along with it, even telling my father that you will stay no matter what. I’m quite flattered," Alex smiled.

"I... I am just doing it because of our business deal. You told that we have to be convincing, right? So, I am trying my best to look convincingly in love," Eve replied. "I-It’s all just to trick him, okay?"

"You could’ve been a great actress, because the way you said it back there makes think that you truly want to stay with ," Alex chuckled. "Should I link you up to a director? We can play in a movie together as a couple."

"Oh, stop talking nonsense, will you?" Eve looked away, staring at the window.

Or so it appeared, as she was actually staring at Alex’s reflection from the window. There was a thin smile at the corner of his lips.

Honestly, Eve wasn’t lying at all.

When Hugh Langford told her that she had to leave, there was a feeling of reluctance and anger at the bottom of her heart. She imagined that if she and Alex were still dating, her answer would be exactly that;

I will stay.

Eve never dated Alex for his money, as Alex lied about everything.

She genuinely loved him because he was a loyal and hardworking young man, and also planned a future with him.

Life was hard for them, but at least they had each other, right?

’Of course, it’s not hard to convince your father that we’re ant to be for each other. Because we are... well, we were...’ Eve thought.

Alex smiled seeing the pouting Eve. If their situation was less awkward, he would’ve teased her until she hit his shoulder or chest with the gentlest slap.

But not now, he had to be patient.

"I’m sorry, Eve."

"For what? For trapping in that situation?"

"No, I am not sorry to tell a lie that we’ve been dating for seven years. I am sorry for you, because what my father said was out of my control," Alex admitted. "I thought he would’ve just ignored you, and we can leave the room. I didn’t expect him to ramble about utter bullshit. Don’t take his words at heart, Eve. He’s just an old crook."

"He has a good insight," Eve replied. She slowly turned her head at him and added, "What he said was right, Alex. Your family situation is so complicated, that I wouldn’t even think about dating you had you told your real identity when we first t."

"Don’t say that, Eve..." Alex softened his voice, and it sounded like he was pleading.

"You—the heir of a billion-dollar family estate and business, dating a daughter of a paid hooker and stripper. Don’t you realize how idiotic that sounds?" Eve scoffed. "It’s so ridiculous that it becos funny to ."

Alex’s lips thinned.

He wanted to say that they weren’t so different.

After all, he too, was a son of a bitch.

But he didn’t want to revisit that painful mory of his mother, so he pushed that mory at the back of his head and said, "That’s why I lied to you back then. I know that you wouldn’t accept if I told you the truth."

"And you’re goddamn right. I have enough on my plate, why should I add more headaches with a young billionaire as well?" Eve scoffed again, but it sounded even more insulting than before. "You and I are just too different, Alex. It makes feel stupid for being in love with you for seven years."

Alex quickly stopped the car, and Eve’s body jolted. She glared at him for abruptly stopping the car, but Alex was holding his big grin at this mont.

Eve frowned, "What’s wrong with you? Why are you smiling like an idiot?"

"You said seven years."

"So?"

"Seven years," Alex repeated.

...

...

Eve’s cheeks reddened instantly and she stamred her answer, "I-I-I misspoke! W-why would I be in love for seven years with a scumbag like you?!"

"Is that so? I thought you said that because we’re still pretending to be a couple," Alex ntioned.

"O-oh, yeah! I-I was imrsing myself. T-the mont we broke up, I got you out of my mind imdiately!"

"That’s unfortunate. But I’ll keep your word. We are just pretending, right?" Alex chuckled. He leaned towards her, and Eve froze on the spot when his face was only one inch away from her. His cold blue eyes were staring at her, searching for her truth.

Their faces were so close that the tip of their noses almost touched. Usually, Alex would kiss her in this situation. But he didn’t.

All he did was lock his gaze at hers, "Then, I will also imrse myself. I admit that I never got over you even after we broke up, Evelyn."
