The man was listening to the secretary’s report when she told him about the Young Master’s arrival. He simply nodded and continued smoking his cigar.

It wasn’t until Alex cleared his throat that he finally spared them a glance.

"Dad, I’m here with my woman," Alex announced. It was quite rare for Alex to sound very solemn. Eve was so used to seeing him all playful and fun that she sotis forgot about his real background.

As she expected, Hugh Langford didn’t smile at them. She had seen a few of his interviews on YouTube, and he gave off the impression that everyone was beneath him. He had the sa gaze as Alex when the latter was looking down at his family in the main hall.

Unfortunately, they were at the other end of that mocking gaze now, as if they were lesser than animals as well.

Eve gulped as she got nervous when being stared by such a condescending gaze. But Alex held her hand tight, transferring so of his courage to her so she could at least stand her ground.

Eve turned her head towards Alex and saw that he already lost his smile, but still had his confidence, just from the way he gazed at his father with such stubbornness.

"Why don’t you say a thing or two to my woman, Dad?" Alex asked. "Don’t tell that you can’t, because I’m sure it’s all because of the cigars you’ve been smoking."

Hugh puffed out the thick smoke from his mouth before putting off the cigar by pressing it on the ashtray.

He stood up, standing tall while staring at Alex and Eve.

"I’ve seen you two from the security cara. You made quite the spectacle in the main hall, Alex," Hugh comnted coldly. "I know that you are just like your mother, emotional and irrational. But I didn’t expect you to be so utterly foolish to put a target on your woman’s head and oppose your entire family."

Alex shrugged as if it was no big deal.

"I wouldn’t call them family. They’ve never considered as one, either. They’re only after our money and all the benefits we provide," Alex said. "Besides, you and I already know that she’ll be targeted the mont they find out. I just have to protect her better."

"Hmph, arrogant, unscrupulous, and stupid. Not the qualities I have must be from your mother," Hugh mocked.

’I’m sure the arrogance checks out. You two look at people like they are a bunch of insects,’ Eve comnted in her heart but said nothing because her body tensed when Hugh shifted his cold gaze at her.

Hugh observed her from head to toe, which made her feel uncomfortable. He didn’t look at her perversely, but he was looking at her like she was an item, or perhaps an exotic animal that his son brought ho to show off.

"What is your na, young lady?"

Eve’s heart raced as her nervousness was about to get the better of her. But when Alex squeezed her hand to snap her out of her daze, she cleared her throat and replied, "Uh, I am Evelyn Carpenter, Sir. It is an honor to see you. I’ve watched your interview—"

"I just need your na. I don’t need your attempt of buttering up, young lady. You are not here to impress ," Hugh cut her off, which made her feel like she was biting her tongue. "How old are you then?"

"Twenty-nine."

"Sa age as my son. Are you the secret woman, whom he chased for the entire university years, and has been dating for seven years?" Hugh asked in detail.

Eve held her breath because the last detail was wrong.

She didn’t date Alex for seven years. It was five, and then they broke up when his lies crumbled down.

’That ans Alex must’ve told his father about our relationship, but never disclosed my identity. He also never told him that we broke up, apparently,’ Eve deduced. She glanced at Alex, who had a little curl at the corner of his lips as if he wanted to laugh at the whole situation.

Eve’s lips twitched. She could feel this was a trap set by this scumbag. Unfortunately, since they were already at this point, there was no point in correcting the mistake.

Hence, Eve nodded and said, "Yes, Sir. We’ve been together for seven years. Alex never told about his real identity, so we lived a fairly normal life for the past five years, until... I accidentally found out."

"But we are still going strong in these two years. She accepted that I lied about my real background because I didn’t want her to reject . Our love is proven to be too strong even after everything has been exposed. Isn’t that right, Love?"

Eve had the urge to smack his head right now, especially with that smug smile pasted on his face.

But there was no point in ruining all of their plans just because of this.

Trying her best not to grimace, she nodded reluctantly, "Y-yes, exactly like Alex said. We’re still going strong after seven years, Sir."

There was a flash change in Hugh Langford’s expression, but Eve couldn’t describe it. Was it pity, or disappointnt?

Nevertheless, that expression lingered until Hugh returned to his cold expression as if he had never shown any trace of weakness before.

"I’ve watched you two at the main hall, and also at the corridor on your way to my room through the security caras," Hugh said condescendingly. "I have to admit that you two look compatible as a couple—"

"T-thank you, Sir—"

"—You two look utterly stupid," Hugh completed his sentence by cutting her off once more.

Again, Eve felt like an idiot.

No, she was an idiot for thinking that a man like Hugh would complint her. They gave her that condescending gaze the mont they made eye contact.

"Really? Why so, Dad?" Alex asked provocatively. "I think Eve and I are perfectly compatible."
