The gate doesn't open with strength.

We try, obviously. Splitjaw throws a shoulder at it. Embergleam heats a glyph and slaps it. The Kid just stands there humming like he knows sothing I don't. I jab it with a stick.

Nothing.

Not stuck. Not broken. Just... picky.

[Gate Challenge Detected – Echo of Will Required]

[Recognition Trial – Identity Resonation Pending]

[Recomnded Input: Intent | Not Strength]

Splitjaw squints. "It's a rock."

"It's a rock with an attitude" I mutter.

The Kid steps forward, calm as anything. Lays his hand flat against the surface. It glows. Glyphs ripple outward, shifting like they're waking up after a long nap.

He opens his eyes.

"It's asking what kind of fire we carry."

Splitjaw frowns. "The hot kind?"

The Kid shakes his head. "The kind that doesn't go out."

I hate that it makes sense.

The gate parts quietly, no grand reveal. Just opens, like we were already supposed to co in.

"Sure. That's not ominous at all," I mumble.

---

The hallway ahead doesn't twist. It adjusts.

Every step feels like it's being weighed.

Embergleam walks with a slow burn in her eyes. The Kid trails his fingers along the wall again, and the glyphs behind him flicker and dim.

Splitjaw grumbles numbers under his breath.

And ? I'm just trying not to breathe too loud.

Then the corridor widens.

And we step into a space that's trying very hard to look like it matters.

It's a hall. Tall ceiling. Stone seat on a raised slab at the end. Cracked pillars. Dust that looks undisturbed in a way that makes my claws itch.

It's not beautiful. Not grand.

Just... unfinished.

The kind of room soone started building because they needed it, not because they wanted it to be impressive.

System pings.

[Dormant Node Core Fragnt Identified]

[Thread Signature: Faded Sovereign Path]

[Claimant Alignnt: Partial]

The carvings along the sides are more scratch than symbol. Not kobold. Not human. Just strange enough to feel like they ant sothing once.

The Kid stares like he almost understands them. Embergleam looks uneasy.

"This place feels like it's waiting," she mutters.

I don't answer. I'm already walking toward the slab.

I don't know why. Just feels like I should.

I press my hand against the back of the stone.

System glitches.

[Thread Vision Activated – mory Anchor Detected]

[Origin: Unknown Sovereign – Status: Dead Node]

Fla. Shapes. A figure using fire to write nas into stone.

Not carving. Not magic.

Then darkness. The scene cuts out.

When I pull back, my fingertips tingle.

Then I hear it.

A scrape.

I turn.

The floor's splitting open in the middle of the room.

Sothing rises.

Half-solid. Shaped like armor but wrong at the edges. It's big. Holding sothing like a blade and wearing a crown that looks more like a locked helm.

The Node Warden.

System flashes.

[Guardian Protocol Active – Sovereign Trial Protection Engaged]

[Imprint Conflict: You Are Not Recognized]

[Engagent Locked – Combat Required]

It looks straight at .

Then kneels.

Then rises.

"Fla bearer unproven," it says in a voice like tal grinding on stone. "Withdraw, or be tested."

Splitjaw's already stepping up. Embergleam's fla lights the air.

The Kid is drawing again.

And ?

I'm stuck wondering why it thinks I was the one to challenge it.

Because I didn't co here to take a throne.

But apparently, the dungeon doesn't care what I planned.

---

The Warden moves without sound.

Not slow. Not fast. Just straight. Like a blade already halfway to its target.

Splitjaw intercepts. His spear rings against the Warden's weapon—and nearly snaps. He stumbles back with wide eyes.

"Not a ghost," he mutters.

Embergleam answers with fire. A wide sweep—enough heat to lt bone—but the Warden slides through it like steam.

The Kid draws faster. Circles and slashes, lines that knot and spark. Glyphs light up along the floor.

System pings.

[Guardian: Node Warden – Integrity: 89%]

[Behavior: Directive Execution – Eliminate Unverified Claimant]

[You Have Been Identified as Sovereign-Thread Carrier]

[Priority Target Status: Active]

"Wait, what?" I shout.

The Warden answers by hurling a shockwave straight at . I dive. The floor cracks behind . Stone dust coats my tongue.

I skid into cover behind a fallen pillar. The system flashes again.

[Ergency Subnode Access Unlocked – Terrain Control Enabled]

[Local Geotry Override: Granted (Temporary)]

[System Note: Don't Waste This]

That's new.

I open a map in my mind. Not visual. Just felt. Pressure points. Load zones. Heat dips. And the Warden... is standing right on one.

"Splitjaw! Left!" I shout.

He pivots without arguing.

Embergleam draws its attention with a blast that carves scorch lines into the tiles. The Kid slams both palms down—glyphs chain together under the Warden's feet.

I twist a thought.

The floor gives out.

Only a little. Just enough to stagger it.

Then Splitjaw's spear connects. Embergleam's fla flares. The Kid's trap explodes in light.

It doesn't fall.

But it's breathing harder. If it even breathes.

[Guardian Integrity: 52%]

[Behavior: Adaptive Response Engaged]

Of course.

It teleports. Not flashy. One mont there, next mont behind .

"Trial incomplete," it rasps.

I duck instinctively, but the blade still slices across my arm. Pain flashes. I yelp and roll, claws scraping over stone. The system pings again.

[Wound: Minor Laceration – Status: Focused Threat Confird]

[Claim Thread Reacting – Trigger Available]

"Then trigger it!" I yell.

[Trigger Confird – Fragnt Compatibility Acceptable]

[Thread Trait Unlocked – Sovereign Instinct (Passive)]

[Bonus: Real-Ti Terrain Synchronization]

Suddenly I can feel every crack in the floor. Every fault line. Every tilt. The whole chamber is a web under my claws.

I grin.

"You like trials?" I growl. "Try this."

I force three shifts in the terrain.

The Warden's stance slips.

The Kid sends a binding glyph that wraps around its leg. Embergleam leaps, fla curled around her like armor. Splitjaw cos from the other side, roaring.

I ti it.

A tilt. A break. A fall.

The Warden crashes into the base of the throne it was guarding.

I jump forward and drive a slab of broken tile straight through the space where its chest should be.

System screams.

[Guardian Integrity: 0%]

[Thread Resistance Broken – Path Cleared]

[Node Core Anchor Available for Claim]

The Warden freezes.

Then fades. Not like dust. Like an old command finally allowed to shut off.

Silence.

We all stare at the place it vanished.

Splitjaw is bleeding. Embergleam's panting. The Kid is... smiling?

Of course he is.

Probably thinks this is the best field trip ever.

Next thing you know he'll be asking the corpse if it wants to play charades.

System pings again.

[Claimant Priority Confird]

[Anchor Node Detected – Sovereign Imprint Ready for Integration]

"Wait," I say.

It doesn't.

Light gathers around the throne. A shape forms.

Not a full system. Just a piece.

A thread.

Waiting to be tied to soone new.

The Kid steps toward it, eyes glowing faint.

He looks back at .

"I think... it likes you."

I stare at the shard.

And feel it staring back.
