Secret Signals and Stolen Glances

Ever since their confession on the iyo campus, Ren and Aoi's days had subtly shifted. To the untrained eye, they were just close friends. But for them, each day at school was a careful ga of glances, coded ssages, and the occasional brush of fingers under the desk.

They had grown skilled at hiding their closeness in public. Aoi no longer pulled Ren into teasing jokes in front of classmates — instead, she left small sticky notes in his textbooks:

"Let's et behind the library today 💙 —A"

Ren would reply in his quiet way, programming small animations into their club's shared dashboard. When no one was looking, a pixel-heart would bounce next to Aoi's na for just a few seconds.

They ate lunch with their usual group but always managed to sneak a few monts alone — on the roof, under the sakura trees, or in the library's quiet corners. Their conversations had grown deeper, ranging from future dreams to favorite childhood ani, to whether or not love had to be loud to be real.

Aoi, always the bold one in public, was surprisingly gentle in these quiet monts. Ren, once painfully shy, had started reaching out — sotis even holding her hand under the table when no one could see.

Curious Eyes

"You're acting weird," Yuna said one day, resting her chin on her hand while eyeing Aoi suspiciously across the lunch table. Her lavender hair swayed gently as she leaned forward. "You blush whenever Ren opens his mouth."

Hayato raised a brow. "Right? I an, I don't bla you. That hoodie of his is practically a confession of love."

Ren nearly choked on his juice. Aoi laughed nervously and waved it off.

"You guys are imagining things," she said, twirling a lock of hair around her finger. "Besides, aren't you two always teasing?"

Yuna narrowed her eyes playfully but said nothing more. Still, her gaze lingered longer than usual.

Later that day, in the hallway, Aoi whispered to Ren, "We gotta be more careful."

He nodded. "I think Yuna knows."

Aoi smirked. "She suspects. But we're smarter."

Ren squeezed her hand briefly before slipping away to class.

The Festival Draws Near

The student council announced a spring school festival — a massive celebration with gas, food stalls, music, and an evening bonfire. Clubs were to host booths or exhibits, and excitent spread like wildfire.

For Ren and Aoi, it ant sothing else entirely: a chance to make more mories — just the two of them, if only in shadows.

They worked together on their club's showcase: a virtual reality maze designed with custom-coded puzzles. Late-night planning sessions turned into mini-dates, where Aoi would rest her head on Ren's shoulder while reviewing code, and Ren would bring her milk tea without asking.

One evening in the empty clubroom, Aoi whispered, "This kind of feels like we're dating."

Ren looked up. "We are."

She grinned. "Right. Just... undercover lovers."

He laughed softly — a sound that Aoi had grown addicted to.

Dancing in the Firelight

The festival arrived with colorful banners, music echoing through the halls, and students bustling in vibrant yukatas. Ren wore a simple dark blue one, while Aoi's was black with pink sakura prints — effortlessly elegant.

They spent most of the day apart, mingling with friends, managing the VR booth, and helping out where needed. But as evening fell, they slipped away to the outskirts of the bonfire.

Soft music played, and couples started pairing up to dance under the lantern-lit sky.

Ren looked at her. "Can we...?"

Aoi smiled and took his hand. "Of course."

They danced slowly, hidden behind the crowd near the trees. Aoi rested her head against his chest, and Ren whispered into her ear, "This feels perfect."

Then she tilted her face up to him. "You know what else feels perfect?"

"What?"

She kissed him gently — a tender, warm press of lips that felt like coming ho.

When she pulled back, her eyes glistened. "I waited for so long, Ren."

He brushed a strand of hair behind her ear. " too."

A Close Call

The next day, they returned to school, the afterglow of the festival still lingering. But peace didn't last long.

Katsuro, the class rep and ever-watchful stickler for rules, caught them exiting the storage room together — where they had snuck off for a few minutes alone during cleanup.

His eyes narrowed. "You two seem awfully... close lately."

Aoi, thinking fast, laughed and elbowed Ren lightly. "Don't be jealous, Katsuro. Ren's helping plan the next club et."

Katsuro didn't look convinced, but said nothing.

Later, in the stairwell, Ren sighed. "That was close."

Aoi shrugged. "Let them wonder."

"But if soone finds out—"

"I know," she said, linking pinkies with him. "We'll keep the promise. Just until graduation."

He nodded. "Then we'll tell the world."

Late Night Affirmation

That evening, they t on the rooftop once again. The sky was clear, and stars sprinkled the heavens like code on a black screen.

Aoi laid back on the bench, her head in Ren's lap. "You know... I never thought I'd fall in love in high school."

" neither," he admitted, brushing her hair with his fingers. "Especially not with soone like you."

She raised an eyebrow. "What's that supposed to an?"

He smiled. "I an soone who makes want to be seen."

She closed her eyes. "That's the sweetest thing you've ever said."

They sat in silence for a long ti. Just the rustle of wind, the distant sounds of the city, and the warmth between them.

Then Aoi spoke softly, "Do you ever wish we didn't have to hide it?"

Ren nodded. "But sotis, the best parts of a story are the secret ones."

Aoi laughed. "You're such a nerd."

"And you love it."

"...Yeah," she whispered. "I do."
