Nie Jiuque had just withdrawn his hand when Wen Xiao’ai’s accusatory voice rang out: "What were you just doing?"

Nie Jiuque looked at her, ignoring Wen Xiao’ai’s tense little face. The pale lips beneath his mask lifted into a pleasing arc.

"You’re awake."

His voice carried a hint of amusent, sounding very pleasant.

"Answer , what were you doing?" Nie Jiuque’s reaction made Wen Xiao’ai frown imdiately.

She instinctively assud he was evading out of guilt.

"What do you think I would do?"

"Did you go to the Cat Demon Clan?"

"..." Nie Jiuque’s hand, resting on his leg, unconsciously tightened briefly before relaxing.

"No."

"Then what’s with the sll of blood on you?" Clearly, Wen Xiao’ai didn’t believe him, her hostility and wariness undiminished.

"Couldn’t it be my own?"

"..." Wen Xiao’ai hesitated, clearly not expecting him to say such a thing.

He continued speaking: "Couldn’t it be that I got injured myself? Why do you always think the worst of ?"

Though his voice carried amusent, and his gaze at her was gentle and smiling, Wen Xiao’ai sensed a hint of sadness.

"...Then why would you get hurt for no reason?"

At this critical mont, she couldn’t think of a reason other than the Cat Demon Clan causing his injury.

"If I said I went to save Jun Moyan, would you thank ?"

"What did you say? What happened to Jun Moyan?" Wen Xiao’ai’s emotions suddenly beca agitated.

Nie Jiuque saw the tension and worry in her eyes, as painful as swallowing shards of glass.

Even opening his mouth felt difficult.

"...He’s fine, he’s doing well."

The next mont, Wen Xiao’ai suddenly stood up.

"Where are you going?" Nie Jiuque reached out and grabbed her wrist.

"What are you doing? Let go of . I need to find him." Wen Xiao’ai turned, her eyes glared at him.

"I said he’s fine."

"I told you to let go." Wen Xiao’ai shook her hand but couldn’t shake him off.

"If you go outside now, aren’t you afraid your clanspeople will drag you back to complete your marriage with Ye Qi?"

"..."

"He’s really fine, trust . I sent Moyu to the Human Realm to protect him; he won’t co to any harm."

The air was silent for a mont.

"...Is it my clanspeople?"

"Yes."

"..." An unspeakable bitterness filled her heart, and Wen Xiao’ai’s eyes turned red.

Nie Jiuque gazed at the sorrow-laden Wen Xiao’ai, her head bowed and silent, filled with anguish.

He wanted to tell her that the person wasn’t worth her pity, and her clanspeople weren’t worth her tears.

But he couldn’t.

He had to wait for her to rember everything, to recall their past.

Seeing she seed to have no intention of leaving, Nie Jiuque tentatively released his grip.

"Thank you."

She said suddenly.

Her voice was sowhat light.

Nie Jiuque abruptly looked up at her, thousands of thoughts swirling in his complex gaze.

The corners of his pale lips pressed tightly into a line.

Seeing he didn’t respond, Wen Xiao’ai thought he hadn’t heard her, or perhaps believed her earlier doubts made him unwilling to accept her thanks now.

So she lifted her head, looked at him, and solemnly repeated: "Thank you."

Nie Jiuque’s hand, resting on his leg, tightened and tightened again, his wounded eyes locked onto her.

"...You’re welco."

He responded hastily, his voice trembling, afraid she would thank him once more.

He didn’t want her thanks, especially not for thanking him on behalf of that person.
