It was the sparks again.

Evelyn hadn’t felt it for a while now, but here they were. Right there. Sotis when she touched him, it could even be a simple graze of the skin. Or maybe just like now.

What were they? And why did it only ever break out inside of her whenever she was in contact with this man?

"You can’t tell you don’t feel this thing too..." she mumbled before she could even think. Her lips snapped shut right after and she stared up at him with batting eyes. "I..."

"A spark, huh...?" there was this mirth on Zayne’s tongue as he worded.

Evelyn swallowed. The words she intended to speak had died on her lips, feeling every touch of his long fingers on her exposed back.

So he knew... Did he...feel them too?

The spot close to her ear tingled for so reason and she hissed to herself, fluttering her lashes. What was going on? Has she always been sensitive around her ear?

"I don’t think you want to know..." The sudden addition to his words made her grow stiff a bit.

She frowned slightly. "K-know what?"

"What you’re curious about."

"That makes... No, I don’t understand. What do you..." She drew a sharp breath in, scrunching her face at the discomfort on the spot. Now, it was itching and for so odd reason, all she wanted was to be bitten there.

What the heck...?

Why would she ever want that? How did her brain even process such a thought? Sothing was seriously wrong with her.

"Zayne, I—"

Partners were suddenly switched and she was snatched away from him. He glanced over, finding her waltzing across the floor now with Caesar. He on the other hand was moving with of course Caesar’s wife, Adeline.

"You look madly in love, Zayne Mancini."

He raised a soft brow at her, curious. "What do you an, Adeline?"

"You’re in love with her, aren’t you?"

"What...?"

"Look at the way you stare at her." She chuckled. "You know she’s safe with Caesar, yet you can’t keep your eyes off her. Or...are you just possessive?" She grinned at him. "Alphas like you and Caesar are awfully very territorial. It’s like an inborn trait you can’t control. Then again, with all that, do you love her?"

His Adam’s apple worked thickly in a swallow. "Adeline—"

"I don’t know what man would look at a woman the way you do her and not be in love. You remind so much of my husband. He used to be just as clueless as you. But I do hope you figure it out soon enough. That is of course before you...lose her."

Partners were switched again and Evelyn was back into his arms.

The first thing he could mumble was, "If I told you that I wasn’t human, would you believe ? And if you did, would you be frightened of ?"

A beat of silence. The music, they could barely hear it now, and the only thing that existed to them was each other.

Evelyn’s lips parted, her breath caught in her throat.

What sort...of a question was that?

Her eyes searched his face, expression left in a stunned stillness.

"What...?" she managed to utter.

"Your heart is racing, Evelyn." Zayne’s eyes, burning so much bluer, peered down at her. "I’ve told you...I’m not the devil."

She blinked rapidly, dry-smiling as if she found him unbelievably funny. "The...the devil? Why ever would I assu you were the devil? The last ti was a joke, Zayne. And what is all this about you not being human? Are you trying to spook ? Well, that would be funny. Are you saying then that I’m betrothed to a...ghost?"

He found her words hilarious, before his expression burst into a massive one of amusent, lips curled. "Evelyn... You—"

Their conversations were cut short again as partners were switched. The problem this ti around was that it wasn’t Caesar she ended up with. But rather...

Valerio Barcini... The man she’d ntioned his na in her sleep.

About 6’3 in height, brown eyes, brown hair, swathed in a three-piece black designer suit.

He watched the way he held Evelyn, filthy fingers on the exposed skin of her back. His smile was long and stretched and what he found so funny, Zayne wasn’t sure of.

Sothing snapped inside of him when all of a sudden Valerio leaned into Evelyn, whispering sothing in her ears—sothing that reddened her skin.

His expression darkened, not a single trace of amusent evident on his face. Even his wolf was snarling in hostility, wanting nothing but for the human to stand at least fifty fucking feet away from their mate.

"Eyes on , Mr. Mancini. It’s rude of you to stare away."

Lowering his gaze, he almost let go at the realization that the woman he was dancing with now was...Lyra.

He was in no way humoured.

Evelyn blinked.

She hadn’t sent an invite to Valerio Barcini. Or had Lucia done so? That would be understandable considering he used to work with her father. But the last thing she wanted was him here.

"Aren’t you happy to see ?" Valerio asked, eyes locked onto her.

She swallowed, offering a smile. "T-that’s not it. I...uh...I just didn’t think you would be coming, t-that is all. You weren’t here during the main event..."

"Oh, I fell late..." Silence dragged between them a bit. "You look beautiful. Very beautiful, Evelyn," he said, still not letting go of her hand that he’d brought to his lips to kiss politely. "You’ve always been beautiful of course."

She chuckled a bit awkwardly, but nodded nonetheless as she tried pulling her hand away. "Thank you. You look...great too."

"Are you alright? You seem a bit stiff." Valerio cackled softly, fingers falling further down to her waist.

She frowned at him. "Valerio. Don’t—"

"Have our relationship gone down the drain...?" he cut her off, asking.

Evelyn choked at the word ’relationship’, flapping her eyes at him in dumbfoundnt. "Relationship? What do you an?"
