Claudia POV

I truly had no intention of angering Jane Jiang. I thought we had a similar dislike for the sa man, but I was wrong, because right after I finished talking about the hickey, Jane’s face turned red, like a volcano could spew from the top of her head at any point. She gnashed her teeth, as if wanting to bite a chunk of my face once given the chance.

I took a step back out of reflex and wondered if I had said sothing wrong.

"Do you think you’re so great after getting a hickey from him? Oh, co on, he’ll get bored of you eventually, and when that ti cos, you’ll—"

"—finally be free? I know," I interrupted and shrugged so as not to give her the leeway to insult again. Maybe I had been a little too isolated with both Miles and Ray, so it felt nice to have soone else to talk to, even if Jane hated my guts. "Well, your reaction tells that you’re not very happy over a small hickey. But you should know that I am not your enemy. I loathe my situation as much as you do, so if there’s anyone you can bla for this, then bla your boss."

After I cut her off, Jane simply stared at with reluctance and unbridled anger. So I couldn’t help to ask, "You know, I don’t understand why you would fall in love with a man like that. He’s very good-looking, but... is that really important when he has such a shitty personality?"

"I’m not in love with him," Jane denied firmly. "And he doesn’t have a shitty personality!"

"... Huh?"

"You ignorant bitch, of course you know nothing about him! Ugh, this is so upsetting. How could he put so much attention on an unworthy woman like you?!"

"Don’t call a bitch, bitch!"

A high-school level of insult shouldn’t affect this much. Still, I had to create a boundary between us or else this girl would continue calling nas.

I crossed my arms as I was done talking with her. "I dated Ray way back in our university years. I think I know him enough not to have any business with him. Too bad I don’t have a choice now."

Jane Jiang looked even more upset. She was holding back tears while her body was shaking. It made wonder if Ray had promised her things, just like how Miles promised to marry or to make happy once his business grew.

Whatever promises he gave this poor girl, she should’ve known better than to believe them, just like how I shouldn’t have believed that scumbag Miles.

"Listen, kid. Do not believe any man’s words, no matter how convincing he is. Because they could change their mind like they change their diapers," I gave her advice coming from soone who had been cheated on.

Jane shook her head as she denied her feelings for the second ti. "I told you that I am not in love with him. I know him better than you."

"You think of him as an irredeemable monster, but there is always a reason for everything. What he did to you is a response to his experiences and his past. That’s why I don’t want you to slander him, because he is so much better than you!"

...

Now I was even more confused by her reaction. Jane acted like a little girl in love, especially with how she tried to defend Ray as if her life depended on it.

"Well, no matter what his past is, it doesn’t give him the right to imprison like this, does it?" I sneered. "A man with so much wealth and power doing this to a helpless woman like —I bet he’s enjoying every single second of the torture he inflicted on ."

"Just shut up if you know nothing about him!" she snarled. "Do you think he’s cruel to you? Then you won’t believe how he dealt with—"

Jane suddenly halted her speech before finishing her sentence.

I frowned as a surge of unease and curiosity made try to guess the last word she was about to say.

"Dealt with what?" I asked.

Jane didn’t utter a single word after that. She turned around and sat at the sa coffee table from yesterday, trying to busy herself by opening her laptop.

However, I wouldn’t give up just because she shut her mouth. I drew near and sat right in front of her at the coffee table.

"Dealt with what, Jane?" I asked again.

"It’s none of your business," Jane replied curtly while her eyes were glued to the screen.

...

From the looks of it, it was impossible to get more out of Jane now. Sweat dripped from her forehead, and when I glanced down, the damp laptop keys told her palms were sweating too—maybe her whole body was soaked with sweat by now.

This girl was acting really strange. She was defending Ray like he was her god, but then beca so scared when she was about to slip with her words.

Why would you be scared of a man you worshipped? What was the connection between them? Because I knew damn well that Jane wasn’t just a secretary to Ray.

Since I couldn’t ask her about that, I decided to play it smart and change the topic instead.

"Since we are stuck together, then why don’t you tell how you ended up as Ray’s secretary?"

"I have no reason to answer that."

"Oh, you do, because I request you to tell about it," I stated with a smile. "Ray told that I can request anything from you. So I’m doing it now."

Jane finally shifted her gaze from the laptop screen to , and I tilted my head slightly, waiting for her answer.

"He saved my father. So I willingly work as his secretary. I am paying back the help he gave to my family before."

"Ah? What kind of help did he offer?" I asked purely out of curiosity. "Did he give your family an unfair contract like ?"

"I prefer not to talk about it," Jane said as she returned to her laptop, then muttered, "You shouldn’t judge him so harshly. He may look crazy, but I... I think he still has so good in him."

Yeah, riiighht...

I knew better than to believe that bullcrap, because I refused to see him through rose-tinted glasses like Jane.
