A smile spread across his lips as he replied, "Why do you think I like you?"
Sawyer’s calm expression made Abigail question her earlier conclusion: this man liked her.
’Am I wrong?’ she wondered while gazing into Sawyer’s blue eyes. Her heartbeat quickened as she took in the gentleness reflected there.
"I don’t know. I just have this strong feeling that you like . Plus, you take to where you’d go when you want to be alone. That makes your liking special, not sothing ordinary," Abigail finally admitted, voicing the thoughts bothering her.
Sawyer smiled and then looked at the fla consuming the dry wood. He didn’t respond to her words, and Abigail chose not to ask him further.
They both watched the flas in silence, the crackling of the fire filling the tense atmosphere.
Sawyer’s gaze was still directed at the dancing fire before him. The fire ward his heart, giving him the courage to express his feelings to Abigail.
After a while, he broke the silence. "Abby, I don’t know if my liking for you is special or just a regular like..." His eyes remained locked on hers. She clenched her hands tightly, waiting for him to continue.
"But ever since we t on the rooftop of the Brick Building, you’ve been on my mind, haunting my senses. At first, I thought it was because I felt sorry for your miserable love story and how that man betrayed you, leading you to contemplate suicide."
Abigail frowned, clearly disagreeing with what he had said.
Sawyer chuckled, noticing her irritation. "I know it was a mistake to think that way because you simply tripped over your feet..." He paused to share a light smile before looking at the fire to follow her line of sight.
"But, Abby, no matter how hard I try to put aside anything about you in the back of my mind, I can’t. You keep appearing from ti to ti. And when we t again in Orange Town, my confusion about how I feel about you grew stronger."
Sawyer could feel Abigail staring at him now. He turned to look at her and was surprised to see her expression of confusion and shock.
"It’s a big mystery to why you, a woman I barely knew, always cos to mind. And this is a new feeling to . So, to find the answer, I decided to co to your café, but the answer I got only tortured more. You flash in my mind like video clips..."
Abigail felt her face grow warm as she listened to Sawyer’s confession. Her mind raced back to their encounters over the past few days.
"In the past few days, I have been confused about my feelings for you. Before we arrived here, I still don’t know whether my feelings for you are special or not, Abby."
Sawyer took a deep, long sigh and smiled at her. This ti, his smile was no longer gloomy; it widened and reached his eyes. The light in his gaze brightened, and he seed to be in a better mood.
"Earlier, you asked , ’Do you like ?’ Your question slowly erased the clouds that have filled my mind over the last few days, and I found the answer."
Abigail’s eyes widened as she processed the depth of his words. She didn’t interrupt him, even though her heart tightened with curiosity about what he would say next.
"My answer is YES. I like you, like you. And it’s not just like, it’s special, not normal," Sawyer stated clearly, and the way he said it felt sincere.
Abigail took a mont to recover from Sawyer’s complete confession shock. Her eyes remained locked on his, but no words could escape her lips. Her tongue felt stiff as if a hurricane was raging inside her.
’Sawyer likes ? Seriously, this man likes ? Why? Does he know I’m just breaking up with my fiancé? Did he forget about that...? Should I answer him or ignore him?’ Countless questions swirled in Abigail’s mind as she tried to figure out how to react to his confession.
"Abby, can you say sothing, please?" Sawyer spoke again after noticing her silence. She also avoids eye contact with him.
As if pulling back from her thoughts, Abigail turns to lock eyes with him.
After a few seconds, she finally responded, "Sawyer, why do you like ?"
"Oh dear Abby, after I talked so much earlier, you didn’t listen? Why are you asking again?" Sawyer wanted to answer her like that, but the words didn’t leave his lips. Instead, a faint smile appeared as he turned to look at the fire. Worry she might see his disappointnt through his eyes.
"If only I knew the exact answer, I would tell you. But one thing I know, you’ve been on my mind since the first ti we t, Abby."
Sawyer’s words struck Abigail like a blow in her mind. She couldn’t help but think to herself, ’Heaven! This man really likes !’
Abigail was unsure how to respond to Sawyer’s confession. She felt lost, realizing that he was falling for her so quickly when she still didn’t have a plan to open her heart again after the pain Ryland had caused her.
Feeling Sawyer’s gaze on her, she turned her gaze into the darkness, trying to calm her racing mind. She pondered what to do next to ease the awkwardness between them.
"I’m sorry if I scare you, Abby. I never intended to reveal my feelings to you so quickly. I had planned to wait until you were ready. However, because you asked , I answered you honestly..."
Abigail shook her head and turned to him again.
"I’m not scared to hear your sincere answer," a half-smile flashed across her lips as she gazed into his deep blue, worried eyes. "But I am confused about how to respond to you, Sawyer. You know what happened to , right?"
A spring-like smile spread across Sawyer’s handso face as he heard her words. He nodded. "Abby, you don’t have to respond now if you don’t want to. I won’t force you. I will wait until you’re no longer confused. I will wait..."
Although Sawyer desperately wanted to hear the response he hoped for, he understood how she felt. He could wait until she healed from her heartbreak.
